There I said it.

Now do something about it.

Stacey King and Charles Barkley were very entertaining on the radio - albeit in very short order.

Jason Goff should be a full time radio host.

Now do something about it powers to be.

Give me a REASON to want to listen - as right now.... meh.

I don't get how Jason Goff gives radio a jolt of juice to the heart.

Barkley would be fun as long as he is paired with someone who is a 'jack of all trades' concerning sports outside of the NBA.

It does feel different seeing Stacey King back in the Comcast SportsNet studio analyzing these Bulls' playoff games now that every game is nationally televised, let alone hearing him on both local & national sports radio. I would've loved to actually see King put Skip Bayless in his place on ESPN2's "First Take" and that "1st and 10" feature.

At the same time, I keep reading that Jason Goff may soon become a full-time co-host on The SCORE. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I really enjoy Goff's work whenever SportsRadio 670 AM gives Goff an airshift.

Don't know why, but pretty much the only sports radio I've been listening to lately is Murph and Fred on Sunday morning....just a little burnt out on the other shows right now, especially with Mac's show being too rotaty lately (yeah, even a Mac ALS like myself hasn't listened lately). But as Ahnold as T1 in The Terminator said..."I'll be back".

Yeah, Mac's show has had different co-hosts quite a bit lately, Eaglo. One day it's Jason Goff, another day it's Matt "Drinky" Abbatacola, and even Laurence Holmes has sat in, regardless if it's Mac or Spiegs away for the day.

I think it speaks volumes when I try to talk 'sportsradio' at a Chicago Sports Fan Message Board mini-get together watching Moe, Larry and Curly Unplugged - and the consensus is - nobody is really listening any more.

I know when the NFL is on it's more popular - but it's a general sense of 'meh' amongst long time sportsradio consumers.

I think everyone occasionally needs a break, even from stuff they love to consume. Plus, the most controversial thing going on right now in sports is the Lance Armstrong PED thing........boring zzzzzzzzz.................an automatic PTFB for me.

Last time I checked, the Bulls were 7 victories away from an NBA championship.

If I think it sucks now, wait until the NBA and NFL are locked out - and the Cubs and Sox continue to battle one another amongst Chicago meatball fans to see who can suck less.

The NFL is without question the most popular sports league in America, Grid, but I heard The SCORE's Hub Arkush mention this when he had an airshift about a week to 10 days ago. With the NBA likely looking at a lockout right after the NBA Finals conclude, Hub mentioned something that Major League Baseball & the NHL's own Collective Bargaining Agreements are also up after next year. Makes me wonder what sports talk radio may sound like if there are no games at all to be played...

As for the NFL lockout, it's now 69 days and counting. I think the longer that drags on, actual games may not be far behind in being wiped out...

I know, but I really don't want to hear about it much...just want to watch it.

I'd really like to get into what's really going on or not going on with the NFL labor thing. What kind of steps are being taken if any. I found Ray Lewis' thoughts on ESPN yesterday/this morning to be rather interesting....how he thinks crime will go up with no NFL. He was very passionate in that interview, kind of scary actually. Check it out if you haven't seen it (I'm sure you have though)

If there were some way for Chuckles to do a weekly thing with B&B, well....that'd be a thing. 8)

No doubt. I was just wondering if Beef was saying Charles should host a Chicago show. That may not be so good. Corl Kyver...

   What I meant to say is that Sir Charles likes it down in Atlanta, the home of Turner Sports, and that "Inside the NBA" show that he, Kenny Smith & Ernie Johnson have a lot of fun doing...

By the way, let the record show I've never been to Atlanta...

I guess there's also this guy D-Rose that is an MVP for the league too.

Chuckles would be an outstanding weekly guest, when he isn't flipping off Miami fans (another endearing quality imho). Kinda like ESPN radio is forced to have their house man Wilbon on regularly.

The overall 'product' is just lacking....

When you have tired hosts like Terry Boers laughing at dumb jokes that most people don't find the least bit funny, people like Lawrence Holmes getting airtime, and baseball experts like Matt Abattacolla, is there any wonder why? There's just too many people on-air, or in "expert" positions that shouldn't be.

Matt isn't a "baseball expert". He's the Cubs reporter. Laurence is on usually for 30 minutes a night. Terry is funny. Sometimes.

I blame the programmers. No game changers even on the horizon.

I to think Goff should have a show, but it should be the evening show and I think his edginess will go away once he gets a show. It happens.

Hah! Chicago sports radio has lost it's edge, and Jason Goff is the savior? Really? I guess you're probably just trying to paint a really dire picture by using Goff as the guy to use his tiny hands to pump life back into the Chicago sports talk scene?

I'm in agreement that the needs to be a shakeup - probably on both major stations. I never go near 1000, but I'm sure some new blood/shifting of teams might get me to at least tune in. As far as The Score, the morning show is a rotating carousel of bad - the midday slot is absolutely brutal (what with a stubborn hillbilly and a curiously cocky manatee in the sidecar) - and even my favorite show, B&B, has run it's course. The evening slot, whether it's DePaul hoops/White Sox baseball/Larry Holmes is true radio poison. As bizarre as Les, and moreso his callers, can be.....he (much like Murph was) is a consistent, "known" factor. I would LOVE for them to shakeup not only the teams, but also the time slot ranges (I have always felt that a drive time show should go until at least 7pm....so adjust the rest of the day accordingly).

They haven't developed a game changer since Bernstein and that's going on 15 years now.

I don't get why the Score is so insular and can't poach a credible host from a smaller market. I guess it's just cheaper this way, or maybe the audience wouldn't accept someone who isn't 'chicago tough'.

I think The Goff should get his own shot eventually, but I'm get less optimistic about it being a success the more I hear. And the evenings are pretty much locked up by LoHo now, right?

You're right Grid. I'm a long time Score guy who started listening on day one back in 1992. I used to listen to WSCR exclusively, but I don't listen much anymore between 9am & 6pm. I never really cared for Garry Meier when he was Dahls partner, but I enjoy the heck out of his WGN radio afternoon show & while I would have never ever listened to am1000 in the past, I now listen occasionally to S&W & C, J, & H.
The Score needs to revamp the entire lineup, 24-7.

Part of the problem is that management refuses to take chances. Perfect case in point:

The Score talent search has twice ended up with people who have backrounds in communications. That's not really a talent search. That is a job interview they could have had on any of the 10 or so college campus' in this city. They should have been using that search to find the next North, not the next Bernstein. There is room at the station for both types but you don't have to find the next bernstein. The next bernstein will come to you.

Then, of course, they treat the talent search like a business treats a summer intern. There is no forethought about the role the person will play.

My little contribution to reinvigorating sports radio: Do the talent search in a completely different way. Don't give people 5 minutes in front of a microphone at a bar. You will only find those with experience using that type of search. Instead, look for personality by doing interviews. When you get down to a few people, give them all a 1 hour weekend shift, maybe on the same day.

After you find your person, give him a job immediately. Let him work in the back offices including programming, sales, production and engineering during the week. At the same time, give him a shift on weekends. Even if that shift is 12-4 am.

They should do it here.

Where else are you going to find a bunch of fanatical people about sports AND radio? There's probably 15-20 guys here that have enough knowledge of sports and humor that, of that group, there has to be 3 or 4 that could translate that onto the radio and with some polish do a pretty good show.
