I know at least one of you have seen this, too. I caught it Saturday morning. Wasn't expecting much.

But I'm glad I did. This was a lot more entertaining than I thought it would be. It has a lot of ancillary window dressing, especially with SHIELD as they really have nothing to do with the main plot but just show up to be annoying--it's all set up, as has been said before.

But the performances, especially by the guy playing Thor, were all good. The movie has a certain charm about it, and I like the fact that it has a lot of mythology to it and doesn't pull too many punches.

A little more humor, though, would have been welcomed. I enjoyed some of the humor but thought it could have had a few more laughs, even. The biggest laugh was in the diner when Thor enjoys his coffee so much, he throws the mug down onto the floor and demands another. There could've been some more scenes like that and it would've made some of the rather clunky first half seem a little more pleasant.

But as far as comic book movies go, this one was entertaining and I look forward to seeing this character again.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

I liked it as well but this isn't a comic book movie. This is really more of a fantasy movie centered around Norse mythology. Think of it like "The Lightning Thief".

I had my life to myself Saturday afternoon and it was raining so I decided to just ride out the whole day in the theater. I also saw Priest and The Beaver.

Priest sucked. It really could have been a great commentary about organized religion but it instead chose to just touch on the subject and revert to a vampire hunter movie. It failed as a vampire hunter movie as well.

The Beaver. I liked it (euphamism thread). Gibson has always been able to pull off characters teetering on the edge of insanity. He does it well again.

well it certainly has more of a fantasy element to it but most comic books ARE based in fantasy. there is less time spent in the "real world" compared to other comic book movies; but it still "felt" like a comic book film a lot of the time.

especially with what i call "miniboss syndrome" that this movie also stoops to and i'd like to see it stop. the big creature, or the big robot monster (in this case, Gort's little brother). every comic book movie has at least one sequence like it.

I guess it would be more clear to say it wasn't really a superhero movie since the real story came in the realm of Asgaard. You could pretty much take out earth and still have that story. It did follow the Joseph Cambell frame for the hero story.

I wonder some day if Stan Lee & Jack Kirby will be compared to Walt Disney,. Their comic book crations of over 40/50 years ago have literally made billions of dollars. I would love to see Jack Kirby's "New Gods" come to the big screen.

I saw it again with my wife and I can tell you it was sure better in 2D than 3D. The biggest thing I came out of the movie thinking was how terrible The Green Lantern looks compared to Thor and the other comic book movies coming out this summer.

DC comics movies usually suck. Marvel nails it for the most part.

Although DC animated movies are great.

I'd just as soon that story had been finished the way Jack wanted it. While they got him to put together a finish, there's a lot to be said for being away from the characters 10+ years.

But, if some movie were to come out, it'd have to have Forever People and Mister Miracle storylines intertwined. (And a bit of Jimmy Olson)

To answer your question, Stan's been on the publicity bandwagon since the 70s.

Beebo,
As a kid,I loved Scott Free (Mister Miracle) & Big Barda.I still remember that cover of Jimmy Olson (featuring "Goody" Rickles) I am an original card carrying member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society. As a little boy,I loved Captain America,Nick Fury (Steranko years),Avengers. Marvel did it right back then. Never dreamed all this "stuff" would do huge box office.

i meant to say--the 3-D is hardly noticeable. did not do anything to enhance the viewing at all.

I wouldn't say I thought it sucked, but it definately didn't do anything to exceed the already low expectations I had going in...as WZ said, the guy playing Thor was good and Natalie Portman is always nice to look at, but good lord I really didn't get much else out of this...found myself waiting for it to be over 30 minutes into it.

I thought it was OK,but even I have to admit there is too much of this superhero BS. It has already made like 350 million worldwide,so expect Thor 2.

The last couple Batman movies have been better than anything Marvel has come up with. But, other than that and Superman1 DC doesn't have much to rest its laurels on. Catwoman, the other Superman movies, several bad Batman movies.

Marvel definitely inspires a lot more confidence than DC these days, but even they have plenty of bad spots on their resume......Daredevil, Electra, Punisher, XMen3, Spider-Man3, Wolverine, Iron Man 2, Hulk, fantastic 4. Also, the awful decision to sell the rights to Spider-Man and the Xmen to Sony has severely limited the prospects of intertwining those franchises with the Avengers properties. Spider-Man is the best character in Marvel, yet they can't use him alongside any other characters. Same goes for Wolverine.

Spiderman the best? You are out of touch with the world of comics. Tony Stark is far better than him.I suggest you go get the hard bound copy of devil in the bottle or the Armor Wars. There are tons more compelling characters than Peter Parker in the Marvel Universe. Go back and read the mid 80 Alpha Flight or the Mid 90s punisher.Spidey is over rated. He is loved because of the first movie.Hell Dr Strange is better than Spidey.

Yeah that's why I said generally.

And I stopped reading Spiderman when they did the Brand New Day stuff.

If you don't recognize that Spidey is far and away the most marketable/famous character in the Marvel universe then you are way out of touch with reality. Tony Stark was nothing but a B level character till his movie came out. And Dr. Strange? Please tell me you're joking.

It goes:
Spidey
Wolverine
Captain America
X-Men

BIG GAP

Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man

IN my best Sheldon voice.I see you have a firm grasp of what is marketable but not what is good.

He's not really in it though. I didn't realize it was him until after I got home and saw a story about it online.

 I can actually picture Sheldon saying that.

Best/Worst is entirely subjective, I was just talking about popularity. But, i would argue with anyone who thinks that Spider-Man isn't an amazing character (no pun intended). Tony Stark is just another rich guy with a lot of toys...boring. Spidey has the great tragic back story, the constant battle between being a superhero while at the same time struggling to pay his bills. And he has the most famous death in comic books on his hands (gwen stacey) which has shaped his psyche for over 40 years. All Tony has is alcoholism.

Spider-Man also has one of the more enteraining personalities in the marvel universe. His self depricating humor and constant quips while fighting make him a great addition to any team scenario such as the Avengers. I know he wasn't in the Avengers till later in life, but his banter with Tony Stark, Captain America and especially Wolverine is constantly a highlight of any teamups they are involved in.

On top of that, no one in the Marvel universe has even come close to producing the amount of recognizable villains as Spider-Man has. I would bet that all the other villains in Marvel put together don't outnumber Spidey's stable. Goblin, Octopus, Vulture, King Pin, Kraven, Rhino, Lizard, Venom....the list goes on and on and on. Who are Iron Man's signature bad guys? Crimson Dynamo and the Mandarin. Not exactly a murderer's row or a who's who.

Maybe X-Men would have a comparable rogues gallery. But you're right. Spiderman is the Everyman superhero. That's why he's so popular.

You hit on something that genuinely annoys me with comic book movies. As the try to outdo each other, they think they can just add more villains (mini bosses) and more superheroes... and I suppose nipples on batsuits. I've always felt that when you add more characters, you sacrifice the character development of the ones you already have. That's why the Batman movies (generally with one primary baddy) are the best. When they start diluting it with more baddies, the story suffers.

the other problem is that instead of having one climactic ending, you're adding more which tends to slow the pace of the film down or make it erratic.
