It's reasonable to assume that the Cubs would be a + 500 team without the injuries to Wells and Cashner.

Dan is helping out a lot here. I suddenly feel better about this team. They have injuries to the pitching staff that no one could recover from and they are only 6.5 games back.

Just real quick lookup before I have a meeting, Cubs are 3-11 in games that Davis/Coleman/Russell starts. Might be off by a game or two, but it's close.

Definitely think they'd be 4 games better with Wells/Cash

It's not a crazy thought. They are still only 6.5 back and Wells and Cashner have pitched one game each.

Would you rather have those two starting every 4th/5th day or the combo of Coleman/Russell/whoever? I don't know if it's a crazy statement to suggest that they'd be within a game or two (or better) if those two had been around.

So, yeah, Wells is a difference maker in that sense.

They're also 15th (29th in baseball) in stolen bases. With no power and no speed to take extra bases it's very difficult to string together that many hits to consistently score runs.

Fewest walks and 3rd fewest strikeouts? I guess Rudy's telling them to swing the fucking bat. Obviously the pitching problems aren't due to injuries but the loss of Larry Rothschild.
