This should just be a running thread as Cubs fans always have their hope placed in the next prospect.

I don't think the entire draft was going on the cheap, unless they drafted a few players with no intent of signing them whatsoever. Which I guess I can't put past them. I'm not as familiar with MLB draft and strategy as I really should be

Dillon Maples is a guy apparently wanting 3 million at least to sign or he's going to UNC to pitch and kick for their football team

If they are able to sign Maples that would be a huge get for the Cubs.

This post must be from one of Terry Boers secret sources!
Only a true mlb scout would have the knowledge to break down high school pitching stats like this.
Hopefully this scout doesn't feel the same way about college stats otherwise the #1 overall pick should probably be a 60th round pick................stop drinking gasoline.

Drafting high school players is the cheap way to go

Please Google the term leverage.

Leverage? So you're just going to assume every high school kid in the country has the ability to get into and pay for college?

I could be totally off base here, but...something tells me if you are good enough to get picked in the MLB draft, you should be able to find some school that will give you a scholarship to play baseball for them.
The only exception to this rule may be Hendry, who would be the one to waste a pick on a player not even good enough to play NCAA baseball.

It was more fun to think that the Cubs actually drafted a shorter Freddie Patek.

Yeah, you're off base.

The NCAA allows each division I baseball program 11.7 scholarships and in division II there are 9 on offer.

NAIA colleges can offer a maximum of 12 scholarships.

A college baseball team has 30 players. You can do the math.

College baseball is not like college football or basketball where all the players are on full rides. College is pretty damn expensive and a quarter or third of a scholarship doesn't help much for less than well to do familys.

If a pro baseball team comes with a $100,000 or even $50,000 signing bonus it's not a very difficult decision to make. Leverage my ass.

Fine, but my point about Hendry drafting suckily still stands.

Wow you actually typed that...........
I won't resume toss but I promise you are so far off that it's pretty fun.
With the rare exception of the White Sox drafting women, children and farm animals I promise you are way wrong.

Mom..Dad....you know how I was so upset that I didn't get any scholarship offers to play college baseball....Well don't worry I just saw myself drafted on the MLB network and it's not even day 3 of the draft. Well done son!

I think it's pretty cut and dry - if you cannot dominate as a pitcher at the HS level, then you are not ready to be drafted in the fifth round.

Bruce Miles had this to say about the Cubs chances at signing Maples:

Bruce -

Having read the article on Maples, it says clubs are aware of the price it will take to sign him. Do you think the Cubs drafted him knowing the price and will meet that price tag to get him into the system?

I can see it

It goes along with their stated plan of building from within. They also shelled out money for Szczur. I'd give it better than 50-50 that they'd sign him, with all the stuff that goes along with it, like paying for the kid's schooling.

50/50 is higher than I would think, but hearing a bit of optimism is nice. I hope by drafting him they are prepared to offer somewhere close to his reported 3million.

What's going to be pretty telling with Rickett's is that he mentioned that there would be some money available come the trade deadline if we were somehow in contention...I'd like to see that money used to signing the vast majority of our draft picks and not just put back into the bank

Chris Carpenter per Bruce Levine. To be a reliever, not a starter.

The time in AAA has done Colvin well. He is hitting .291 with 5 bombs and I think 18 or 19 rbi. He started off terrible when he got down there so its good to see that he has been able to settle things down and find his swing. He does K 1 out of every 4 AB's though.

Look for Hendry to trade him for a journeyman starting pitcher to plug in to the rotation!

I'm thinking more along the lines of a white utility infielder.

Since I was advised yesterday that all fanbases hype their prospects equally, I just spent forty minutes searching for the White Sox Minor League prospects thread. Can one of you gentlemen kindly direct me to it?
