The Cubs had a decision to make this past winter and made a poor one. They should have gone totally with young players in an effort to identify and develop young players that could be a part of a championship team going forward. Having room for guys like Tyler Colvin to play every day, whether at 1st base or in the outfield was a part of the equation. they need to know if he's a piece of the puzzle or not. instead, they sign Carlos Pena. He's been about what I expected and worst of all, with Fukadome, Soriano and Byrd beginning the season in the 3 outfield spots there was no opening for Colvin. It can be said that the fans might have been less enthusiastic about purchasing tickets for a team that had a lack of "name" players. But the purpose of the exercise is to develop a team capable of competing for a title. The bullpen has just 3 guys I would want on the team (Marmol, Marshall and Wood) and the starting pitching is too thin to really contend, so what was the purpose of throwing away 10 million on a stiff like Pena? Despite all this, I do not believe they will lose 100 games. The only significant injury was to Byrd and despite being a good player that plays the game the right way, he is also a guy that has low power numbers and his loss is not a great one. Soriano, Ramirez and Pena will probably have a few hot streaks and carry the team past 62 wins. Whooopee....

I didnt mean to blame him for the mess. I do think other owners may have made some sweeping changes (Fire hendry, Hire Team President etc) and that would have been the way to go.

I get what you are saying. Its gotta be pretty goddam frustrating for Cubs fans. Yes he is responsible for the direction-- or lack thereof-- with the organization now, but in regards to your quote above there, what you said has little or nothing to do with the players on the field. A new GM and a team president might have helped things somewhat, but you would still be giving boatloads of money to guys with no trade clauses, and the new GM would still have very little payroll to work with. Thats what I mean when I said that you can't really get too pissed at Ricketts just yet. Now if the '11-'12 offseason goes by and there are little or no sweeping changes, then everybody has a right to get pissed.

I mean, he knows the team is bad. When the last time the Cubs offered beer/hotdog specials in the bleachers? Or the last time they had multiple games where you could get a ticket and a hotdog meal for a pretty reasonable price? Maybe they would do that like 2 games out of the year as a promotion, but this is every weekday or something. So in that sense, at least he is trying. He is a businessman and he has to make money to be successful. He needs asses in the seats to try and turn this thing around so at least he is making an effort in that regard.

its funny, I think I used the same expression last year during the Lou-quit press conference or something...the guy looked out of his league and used standard Hendry-isms when answering questions

I will now take them out of my avatar as they are 0-6 since having done so to guarantee victory.

I will now jinx something else.

Yes.

They're about to go 2-8 on this 10 game road trip. After that the talk of a 100 loss season will be discussed by many people. I want to predict it will happen before everybody jumps on it.

Tough to lose 100 in this NL. But they will do it.

After going 37-55 in the first half, the Cubs only need to go 25-45 to finish with the 100 losses that would be a peak of futility.
I think they got it in them.
Their remaining schedule:

FLA for 4
PHI for 3 (pencil in a sweep)
HOU for 3 (might get 2 here!)
@ MIL for 3
@ STL for 3 (Brutal roadtrip but wait there's....)
@ PIT for 4 (and Pitts has OWNED them this year.)
CIN for 3
WAS for 3
@ ATL for 3
@ HOU for 3
STL for 3
ATL for 4
@ MIL for 3
@ SF for 3 (might win 2 on this roadtrip!)
PIT for 3
CIN for 3
@ NYM for 3
@ CIN for 4
HOU for 3
MIL for 3
@ STL for 3
@ SD for 3 (another brutal roadtrip predicted)

I can see a 60-10 stretch for them here.

They might not lose 100, but 95 or 96 L's is still a god-awful season.

It would be hard for the Cubs to go 25-45 in the 2nd half. I think they finish with about 95 losses.

2-4 since the break. That's the right pace!
