Pearl Jam to reign o'er Lollapalooza

March 1, 2007
BY JIM DeROGATIS Pop Music Critic
The major headliner for year three of the retooled Lollapalooza concert will be none other than the band that became the breakout superstar of the old Lollapalooza back in 1992: Seattle's godfathers of grunge, Pearl Jam.
The three-day concert will take place in Grant Park from Aug. 3-5, and Lollapalooza promoters don't plan on announcing the 130-band lineup or putting tickets on sale for several weeks, until late March or early April. They declined to comment on any of the acts Wednesday.

Nevertheless, three concert industry sources confirmed that fans may expect Evanston native Eddie Vedder and his band to perform on Chicago's lakefront as part of a U.S. tour that will follow a European jaunt that has already been announced in June, and which includes several major music festivals.

Pearl Jam's last self-titled album was released in May 2006. Its most recent recording is a cover of "Love Reign O'er Me" by Vedder's heroes the Who, which will appear on the soundtrack of "Reign Over Me," the forthcoming film directed by Mike Binder and starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle.

The Onion's AV Club had a great blurb about this.

"Pearl Jam is headlining Lollapalooza for the first time in 15 years. Well, it's official Gen-Xers: We are fucking old"

Saw PJ at Alpine on the Riot Act tour, and they were good, but Eddie was hammered and getting all political by the end of it, so we left during one of his incoherent blatherings. Having all the frat boys heckle the Buzzcocks beforehand was lame too. A good show, musically, however.

Saw them at the UC the last time around.
Eddie downed a bottle of wine during the show - his tribute to Morrison I think.

They whipped out "Crown of thorns" for that set, which was pretty special.
I think he said it was the first time they played it in our fair city.

Caught them at the UC, too. Great opening with "Release", and a great cover of "Baba O'Riley".

Doug, if it was 2000, you'd remember. showtime temperature was 26 degrees.

I used to love Pearl Jam. I saw them at Soldier Field in 1995. I never really stopped liking them. They just sort of fell of my radar. I didn't even know they still had Lollapalooza's. I was at one of those in 1997. Near Rockford. Pecatonica, I think. Hot as hell that day.
