Game moved to Duke -1

I rode Coach K anyway. Great 1st half, then they came out of the locker room for the second half like a bunch of candy asses.
Other than Scheyer, their guard play is really lacking.

St Joe's was another easy winner. I have been riding the Mississippi teams all year.

MSU is #1 ATS
SMU is #4 ATS
Miss is #5 ATS

I have really, really sucked lately so tread carefully. But this situational spot for the Flames sticks out to me today.

UIC +9-1/2 @ Loyola (WSEX)
It's been a frustrating season for UIC and it sure looks like they quit a few times on acting coach Coombes. They've mailed a few in, there is a lawsuit pending over the program, some individual attitudes have cropped up at times, and it's generally been a miserable few months for the Flames. On the other hand, Loyola is flying high after its win over Butler and this is about to be the best season in the last 22 years for the Ramblers. This is the largest spread in this rivalry in years. The spread is what it is because of the comparative recent fortunes of the teams. If you believe in Loyola's momentum and think the Flames will mail another one in or play the kind of undisciplined ball they have at times, then you might like Loyola.

BUT....to me this matchup is about the heart of a rivalry. It's not about any significant talent, coaching, motivation or any other kind of edge Loyola may have. First, these two are big intra-city rivals, the kids all know each other and there really isn't that much difference in overall talent on this team. Sure Schilb is the most talented player on the court, but Jeffers isn't far behind. You could argue Loyola is the "better" team, but I could make a case that UIC's talent, particularly in the front court, is better than Loyola's. There simply isn't a 9.5 point spread in talent here.

Loyola will want it to be sure to avenge their loss at UIC six weeks ago. But the game is actually more meaningful to UIC as Loyola is locked into third place in the HOrizon and has a first-round bye sewed up. UIC on the other hand needs a win to likely clinch a first round home game.

But actually, I doubt the players will be thinking much about any of this. They want to beat their intra-city rivals whom they face all summer on the playgrounds and in the hoods. This is a rivalry with two evenly matched (talent) teams. I don't see UIC being "flat" or "uninspired" or mailing this one in against Loyola. This game means too much to these kids. And it's simply toooooo many points for this kind of game that likely will go close to the wire.

20-15 since the Super Bowl

Akron/Duquesne under 184
Duquesne had some huge totals lately, and we know that the public likes overs. Akron will slow this game down, the highest total they have had all year was 180. Love the under here.

21-15

West Virginia +9
Pitt has really been struggling lately. I think Aaron Gray is one of the most over-rated players in the last ten years. The Panthers are a good defensive team, but they often go through awful shooting stretches. I don't know how you can lay 9 with this team right now. If WV shoots average, they cover, if they shoot above average, they will win this outright.

UIC -8 against Wisc-Mil

UIC on a 4 out of 5 roll appears to have gotten hot at the right time of year. They have size and are physical on defense. UWM had one good burst in the middle of the year. Other than that, they look like a former champion that lost all of its top players. They have been getting worse in the last quarter of the season and are horrible on the road.

Wis-GB -8 against Cleveland State

Fockers blew a halftime lead, and completely fell apart in the second half. 21-16

2/28/07

Minnesota vs. Purdue over 130-1/2
Minnesota is a terrible defensive squad, Purdue could score 80. Since the return of big man, Spencer Tollackson, the Gophers have averaged more than 66 per game.

Two team, 5 point teaser

Texas Tech -4 / NC State -0.5

I didn't want to lay the 9 and the 5.5, but I think that both of these numbers are solid

LSU +2

With big baby out the last two games, LSU has been running more, which has really opened up the offense. They might be better without Davis.

Maryland +7 vs. Duke -120
I hate watching games in which I have bet a team playing Duke at Duke. I know the refs will cost me about four points and several significant calls will go the wrong way. I know Mary will get screwed tonight by the refs, by the home clock operator and whomever else can do it. I know the boo yah network dolts will make me puke a few times with their Duke gushing. I may not be able to even watch the damn thing because the entire injustice of it all will just piss me off. But I think Mary is the "better team" and I'll take my chances that 7 points are enough to overcome the refs' advantage for DUke.

Iowa -3 @ Penn State
I think this is the 2nd or maybe the 3rd road favorite I've taken all year. Iowa is playing very efficiently lately on both ends...particularly offensively. Haluska has a history of shooting well in that building in Straight College. And Penn State is really stumbling to the finish line with lousy efficiency on both ends in recent games. Alford's teams typically play pretty well late in the season and in March. Iowa looks like it might be getting better (if you throw out the one clunker at MSU). Penn State isn't.

Splitsville last night as my rare foray into road favorites bites again. So much for the Squakeyes playing better. One Thursday night tourney total here from the Southern Conference...

Western Carolina-Appy State OVER 65.5, 1st half
Appy State might be the hottest team in America and their offensive efficiency the last few weeks has been outstanding. The Catamounts will play faster than Appy and both of the games these teams played had well above average pace. The first game totaled 191 as both teams got up and down the floor; the second game totaled only 141 as WCU shot just 40% in that one. I like the game total over 141 also, but think the first half is better because I expect Appy to ultimately pull away and win comfortably..and the dynamics of a blowout sometimes hurts an over play. WCU shot almost 50% yesterday, so hopefully that hot shooting will carry over for them for at least the first half tonight. That's one angle I look at in conference tourneys....often a team gets hot shooting and it carries over for a few games or the entire tourney (until they run out of gas). All of my games are rated the same, but I did put a bit more than usual on this one.

22-18

Washington -3
The Huskies play very well at home, 15-2. USC is not the same team on the road. Washington's tournament life is on the line, and I think they can handle a small number at home.

I like the first three favorites in the MVC Tourney (I know SIU already came in). Bradley -1.5 and Creighton -11.

I LOVE Wisconsin Green Bay at -3.5 versus Youngstown State in the Horizon Tourney.

I have Bradley and UWGB as well. I like Creighton, but I really hate laying double digits in these conference tourneys.

I had under 132 in the SIU game. It was 30-19 at half and looked like a lock. SIU hit two free throws with 26 seconds left to make the score 71-59. Drake came down and missed a three. I was praying that they wouldn't foul down 12 with 10 seconds left and blow my cover. But they didn't, and all is well.
