Alright. Larry's teased worked during B&B. I wanted to see how Larry would make this a "feel sorry for me" thing.

What's worse than spending radio segments talking about your birthday when you're an adult? Spending a segment talking about your surgery.

Oh my God, the way he's going at it is amazing. Glad for him that it went well, but c'mon, he's acting like he's a world leader that went in for surgery.

Who's hearing this?

I thought it was nice. He seemed happy and relieved and wanted to thank people for it.

Bad form Beardown.

GI tract diseases are awful. I have a family member with irritable bowel syndrome.

Telling your audience is fine. It's the way he goes about it. Of course he's happy. Everybody who wakes up from surgery is happy. Telling us that "He didn't want listeners to worry, or for it to effect their day to day lives." is a little bit too "self-loving" for my taste. Telling us that he did it now cuz, "Ya know, I'm most valuable during Bears season" is also not the way you desribe your surgery. Let somebody else compliment you if they choose. At least that's what I've always thought. Then he has to tell us that the surgery was "top secret" or something like that? What? Does Larry think people knowing of his surgery would jeoporadize national security? That's the way it came across.

Happy he's fine. Bad form for me? But funny when B&B makes fun of the legless Ron Santo? Ok. I'm not even making fun of him. I just thought he was in "bad form", acutally.

He also felt the need to tell us that he's a hero. Yeah. He did. He said he's not totally recovered but felt he should come in today cuz he didn't think it would be fair to the listeners to just pop back during Cubs/Sox. What the hell does that mean? I don't know how somebody can have the mind to say something like that. That is one of the most egotistical things any radio host has ever said in the history of radio.

I'm just saying I've heard a lot of people talk of their medical problems. I don't think I've every heard anybody, while speaking of their surgery, take time out to compliment themselves or tell me how important they are, or tell me they're a hero. For most people, they'll tell you a medical problem humbles them. Larry, on the other hand, told Score listeners that they should be humbled by his medical problem. He took this moment to tell listeners how lucky they were that his surgery went well and how fortunate they were that he's back. I found that rather strange and deplorable.

How about do it this way:

Larry: I've been out a few weeks cuz of surgery for my Crohns (Maybe explain the surgery). All went well. Thanks to all the listeners and colleagues who showed concern for me. Happy to be back.

Beardown, Crohn's is an awful disease...it's very painful from what I understand. I've known some people that have had it, and it changes your diet and everything. Maybe lay off this one.

Yeah. Fine. I'm not commenting on that. I think it's clear what I'm commenting on. Does Crohn's make you have no class, humility and self-awareness? If so, then I apologize. If not, I stand by everything I said. It was bad.

That's fine. Like I said, commenting on it is one thing, what he did was embarrassing. You deal with it.

Larry took his sympathetic situation and made himself an unsympathetic character. He went out of his way to do so. Very few people could or would do this. Larry did. Don't blame me. Blame him.

Fuck that. One of my best friends has it. Even had part of his intestines removed. when he was 18. The medication stunted his growth as well. So, the man cant eat any spicy foods...well he can, just needs to be within 5 feet of a shitter,

Know others who have it as well and I have heard more compassion for Loho in this thread than I have heard come from any of them in 30 years.

Just to put this thing in perspective. I watched "60 minutes" a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure some of you saw it. It was the entire hour dedicated to a soldier who had received "The medal of Honor" - the first one awarded since Viet Nam. When asked, he described himself as an "average soldier".

So there's that and then there's what Larry did today.

Just sitting here, reading Chapter 28 of Beardown Is Ultimately More Right Than You'd Care To Admit.

Beardown is right this time. We don't need to hear a radio host getting emotional for a segment because he had a procedure done to help handle his Crohn's. Yes, it's a GI problem and it sucks at times - but tons of people live with it everyday.

A simple "I had to take a few days to rest, but can you believe that Mark Cuban acted with class and every single person in Vancouver didn't???" would have sufficed.

I know it Larry was begging for sympathy, praise and admiration. That's what it was about. I just think it's diplorable to do that over the radio. Who does what he did? Who goes at it like that? Give it a listen if they podcast it. You'll feel the same way.

I'm sorry. I just think there are more sympathetic and admirable situations in this world than for someone who has a non life threatening disease, had minor surgery and can't eat onions. Call me heartless if you want.

Man, Larry with his dramatic voice to describe the disease, surgery and recovery. You felt like it was MLK, after being shot, giving his last words to Jesse Jackson. Or Jesus at the Last Super. Or Tom Hanks at the end of "Private Ryan". Or like someone describing a date with me.

Yes. He said he didn't want listeners to worry about him in their "day to day" lives. Something like that. That's amazingly arrogant and kind of disturbing that someone could say that to radio listeners. You have to really be deeply and truly in love with yourself to say something like that. This type of love is rare for anybody to have for anyone. It's most rare to have that kind of love for yourself.

I don't even need to go to the podcast for this one. Larry's ego running at 5000 RPM's. I just hope no one on the hospital staff crossed him during his stay.

You know Larry wished he would have thought of a music bed for "Heroic tale of me" monologue.

Light 'em up. What would Larry have chosen had he thought of it? You can change the lyrics to fit his dramatic cry to celebrate, praise and worhip himself. You can jump in too, Larry. I know you want to. What would be most fitting?

Any time you have a surgery - an internal surgical procedure - it is some pretty serious and scary shit:

YOU.

COULD.

DIE.

Maybe right away (heart, septic shock), or maybe from a blood clot/stroke later on from some shit that was dislodged during the disturbance.

Happens to young and the old. See Brett Michaels.

More people than there should be die from allergies or other reactions from the anaesthetic, as well as deadly post-op staph/MRSA infections. No Joke.

Don't fuck with him on this - you could tell he was scared, and he was sharing that with everyone.

Back the fuck off.

You know Bret Michaels is still alive, right?

Beardown is absolutely correct in his analysis of Larry's self-aggrandizing return to the airwaves. I'm not even sure how this can be disputed. Holmes' entire modus operandi as a host is to conceal the hollowness of his program by elevating himself from the role of narrator to that of protagonist. Rather than reporting or commenting on a story, he prefers to make himself the story--precisely because he lacks the knowledge and analytical skills to talk about issues not directly connected to his personal life in an intelligent or compelling manner. That's why his Bears "reports" are littered with tales of how the players relate to him as a reporter instead of being packed with information about what is happening with the team "beneath the surface." Laurence's failure to cultivate sources and develop a well-rounded intellect have rendered him a vacuous narcissist who has turned his radio program into a reality show. That makes sense given his inability to engage with reality.

No. I could tell he was egotistical, arrogant and over dramatic. Scared people don't interrupt their heart-wrenching, "scary life-story" to talk about how important they are and how they are a hero for doing a radio show as a favor to listeners because it would be wrong of him to return during "Cub vs. Sox". It wasn't a moment of him sharing his fears. It was a moment of him begging for praise, sympathy and admiration.
