Great episode as usual. My wife really lost it when Ned died.

Yeah I couldn't believe that they would kill off the main actor, when I found out a few weeks back I wondered to myself if the supporting cast was strong enough to carry on without him, and while the obvious answer is yes, I'm not quite sold on the Stark boys. I think that the Bastard son is great, but he is obviously staying put; but IMO Robb isn't really a screen stealer? :? whatever the hell that means...

i threw my book against the wall. i couldn't believe he did it. but that's one of the things that martin does really well...he knows how to bring piss to a boil real well.

the main character is not ned stark, though. it's tyrion lannister. and other central characters like catelyn, jon "you know nothing" snow and dany. they will easily carry the weight. even arya has a great storyline in the second season. sansa's will be really painful to relive.

Maybe not, but Sean Bean was the big name attached to the show, so I'm looking at it through the eyes of the TV only, and all the plot for the most part has been centered around him thus far which makes me think of him as the main character...

he was definitely the biggest star and he was a central character but he doesn't really have much of an arc narratively. the focus will shift to some of the characters i mentioned. tyrion is a much more tortured soul and a clever guy. he was definitely one of the best things about "clash of kings" (which was a slower read than GOT).

Sean Bean draws the short straw for his acting roles in things like this. LOTR, dies first movie...GoT dies first season. Tough break.

I checked out the book when this thread started, but never got around to reading it. My wife picked it up and has now read all of them. She hasn't spoiled anything for me, but she did warn me to not worry about who I think the "main" characters are, because things don't go well for many of them.

...and in other news, i was just getting to downloading episode 1 before i remembered there's a WWF PPV on tonight. i'll have to catch up with the rest of it during the week, as my bandwith is both precious and limited.

i know nothing about this series or the books, so i hope i'm pleasantly surprised cuz people everywhere are sucking off this series.

Watch out Westeros.

The Mother of Dragons is coming and she's pissed.

Until next season....

i like the way the finale was handled; i find it interesting that tywin is a lot more tolerant of his half-man son in the series. in the book you can just feel the coldness he has for tyrion.

i actually got choked up when catelyn found robb slashing the tree. very good scene.

didn't really need the whore scene (not talking about shae)...no idea what purpose that served. but most of the episode was very well done.

A great finisher.

It sets up the main plot lines very well leading into next season, I was so fucking pissed when it ended. I bought the GoT book and I'm a few hundred pages in...the show gets a lot right but of course you get a lot more history and solid exposition in the book which is expected.

-The Dragons are coming, for real.
-The Nights Watch is gonna go out and kick some ass.....and probably all be slaughtered.
-I hate Joffre, so very, very much. I'm getting to see what WZ was talking about with Sansa.....she is already going through some fucked up stuff and good for her to think about throwing Joffre off the bridge. It's going to be a hard knock life for her.
-Ayra is already awesome and will get more awesome with her trip to the wall. King Roberts bastard looks to be pretty intriguing as well.
-King of the North? Hmmmm......methinks that won't end well for Robb.
-Stanus and Renly? I like Renly but I also heard a rumor about who will play Stanus.....good to see the Lannisters eating shit.
-And Jaime Lannister.....................showing some remorse now that he has had some time to think about life and how brief it can be.

The best thing is.....I can go buy the other books and mother fuckin' read some more awesomeness.

Looks like GoT with Imperial Bedrooms as a buffer before I jump into the next tale....

Although I enjoyed the show, I think overall HBO might've dropped the ball on this one just like that have for just about every show they've ever made. This whole first season felt like little more than filler with basically nothing big happening till the final two episodes. The set up for next season looks great, but part of a successful cliff hanger is having a huge payout right beforehand, which this show lacked overall.

If the show was coming back in the fall I wouldn't have a problem with how they did it, but waiting a full year is going to kill what little momentum the show gained last night.

All in all, this whole first season felt like one long pilot episode.

:D :o :( out of :D   :alien:

 Wow... I think HBO has made some of the best TV of the past decade or so. The Wire may be the best TV I've ever seen.

And I think they've done a pretty good job of this. My only issue all season was burrito-izing Renly and Loras, and places where they could've used some better CGI (e.g., direwolves). I suppose if you read the books and tried to contemplate how they'd be able to put all that info into a movie without making it drag, I think they have made excellent choices without sacrificing the main themes/storylines from the books.

No, you're missing my point. I agree that HBO has made some great tv shows, some of the best ever made. But, its the behind the scenes stuff where HBO has dropped the ball and shot itself in the foot several times. Take the Sopranos for example. How many times did they have to delay a season because HBO dragged its feet on contract renewals or other issues? At least a few seasons that I can remember. But, Soprano fans can't be too upset because at least they were able to finish the run when it was all said and done. As for Deadwood fans, they weren't so lucky. That show had to be cancelled after 3 successful seasons because HBO took so long to renew contracts that several of the actors said fuck it and committed to other projects rather than wait for HBO to pony up.

HBO has become known for terrible behind the scenes decisions and dealings and many shows have suffered as a result.

Making fans of this show wait a full year to follow up on what felt like a 10 week pilot could be the latest in a line of poor decisions.

I was also disappointed by the lack of involvement of the wolves all season. I thought they would have a much greater role, but my mom told me she read/heard that they were too hard to train so they had to cut a lot of their parts out. That sucks.

Without ruining anything, I will simply say that they really need to resolve this issue. If they cant there will have to be some creative alterations made to the storyline.

I think they said the budget is larger for next season. Maybe use CGI.

And I'm not sure if this was brought up or not... but Sean Bean did a great job with Neddard. But he did an even better job with girlfiends. Google his girl, April Summers. Amazing.
