That's the thing. I'd either have to have no prospects or tons of FU money to really pursue something like that. I think the last time I was making what the Score pays producers I was caddying during summers in high school.

They haven't developed a game changer since Bernstein and that's going on 15 years now.

I don't get why the Score is so insular and can't poach a credible host from a smaller market. I guess it's just cheaper this way, or maybe the audience wouldn't accept someone who isn't 'chicago tough'.

I think The Goff should get his own shot eventually, but I'm get less optimistic about it being a success the more I hear. And the evenings are pretty much locked up by LoHo now, right?


This also has to do with the Score's ability to evaluate talent. Mitch thinks he is developing a game changer. If you look at the way Sir has been handled, it is the proper way to develop talent. The one problem is, it's Sir. I shudder at the thought that one day soon, Sir will have a daytime show and will be given years for it to develop.

Are you honestly saying that ANOTHER f'd out "Score Search" is the answer? Really? I know you're a respected, long-time, dude...but c'mon. That produced the whiney-voiced McKnight and some lady......so, somehow removing the "some background education/experience" part of that formula will IMPROVE the "wasteland" that is Chicago sports radio? Meh. Nay, double meh.

It really is an annoying part of this business that those aspiring to get on mic "must" first pay their dues via producing etc .... I actually REALLY respect a "producer" that does just that, produce and stay behind the scenes. But I know most here just LOVE when people chime in from the other side of the glass :shock:

The Score needs something different. You won't find different at Medill. They aspire to be exactly the same in order to eventually fit in at ESPN.

The short term fix, in my opinion is sitting over at ESPN 1000 doing part time evenings. Hood has a bit of the old time Score in him while being full of the knowledge preferred by the new Score. He is the one to bring the Score back into balance.

People may hate Murph but his mission statement was really the foundation of what the Score was built upon...fans talking to fans...the voice of the fan. They have lost their mission and in some ways are an evolved Chet show rather than an evolved North (I use those two only as they are obvious polar opposites defining pre and post Score sports radio...and I mean the original North, not this thing he has become)

It's one thing to listen to your employees & to consider their suggestions, but it was a big mistake for Mitch to fire Murph because Terry hated him, when Murph was the highest rated & most listened to show on the Score, & to let Mac choose Spiegel as his co-host. The Score has lost its personality, character, & connection to sports fans.
Mitch needs to grow a set & make the necessary changes regardless of what Terry, Dan, or Mac think.

Woah, wait a minute youseguyz. What yer sayin' ain't true. How can you buy into the fact that the Score has gotten away from the embrace of the "fan"??? Clearly all you have to do is climb up the ass, and do labor gigs, for the talent OR send in/call in with sarcastic and condescending missives to make the host(s) wet themselves ......... THAT will get you "in" with the hosts. Otherwise, prepare to be lumped in with the throbbing mass of meatballs that seemingly EVERY host hates.

I do agree that Murph unceremoniously being pushed off the cliff was a clear sign of what direction the station wanted to take (and who was really running the asylum). Can't say I raided Abby's old drawers to claim my Fan Club badge, but I did find Murph's bizarre radio world to be quite the security blanky.

I don't have the time I once had to listen to the shows consistently. There is also something wrong with every show that is on and I also miss callers and emailers. They brought a fresh thought in.

The problem with sports radio is choice. There are way more options now than there were in 1992.


But looking at it from strictly the Score point of view, there is no balance on the station.

During the heyday, you had 8 hours of programming from 10-6 that offered choice. With Jiggs and North you had an outlet for rampant meatballs to call in and get their point across. And then the HFC would come on and call people idiots.


Now its like an 8 hours of the old HFC in terms of attitude, not content.

I don't know how you fix it. I don't know if Mitch wants to fix it.

Pretty sure Bernstein helped Mitch judge the last talent search, so you know the persons resume would have just as much weight and anyone with personality had zero chance, unless they didn't dangle any participles!

Another issue is the WEAK frat mentality that has developed at WSCR.

Whoever walks in the door and really mixes it up is going to need to step on some toes and just not care that he does.

Or they just wait to buy Silvy and Jurko.

(Honestly I never was great at turning on mics) The interview finishes and Mitch comes in studio to ask Murph how the interview went. The talkback button was stuck, so I could hear their whole conversation and well it wasn't very flattering to me. Murph went on a bitch fest of how I didn't have Stoney's Mic on for the first segment. The man talked shit about me for about 3 minutes and nothing else. How I was doing a bad job, didn't pay attention and blah blah blah.

I couldn't believe it and I just snapped. I waited to the show ended but didn't even bother listening to that bitch. I did nothing for the last hour and even had my head down like I was sleeping. A few days earlier, he played all concerned about my father and then when he thinks Im not listening he is telling my boss how bad I am at my job. Fuck him. He tried to be nice as I was leaving and said "Hey Cy, what we got going on tommorrow" I told him he would figure it out and how he shouldn't trash people with the mic on. Then I heard him say something and I went back at him, but Murph didn't say nothing and I went home. From that point on I felt that Murph was a Cockfuck.

Needless to say, I worked with Murph until January 2008 and not once did he offer any kind words about my father. Nothing when he knew damn well what my family was going through. Instead he did everything to get me off his show. So screw him, he's a Cockfuck.

As far as being a team player at the Score, I really hated myself for being that guy. My only motivation was that I really wanted to be on the air at the Score, so I would do anything for that goal. That meant saying things that I thought Mitch and Paul would like to hear. Sorry about that and as you can see I dont give damn anymore.

btw, jason is a good cohost at best. he aint no host, "come on". they really fucked up when they let north go. he never did anything wrong besides drink and drive while calling into the station live on air. i know thats bad enough, but its not like he was a malicious guy... north is the definition of a character. he really was just like dan bernstein only different. much more street smart but less book smart then dan. much much funnier then dan too. the score got rid of him because they didnt like paying an uneducated man that much money, but look at the station now. its anything but CHICAGO or entertaining. the best host on the station lives in indiana.

If you listen enough, you will hear past producers trash Murph from time to time. I can remember listening one evening recently and hearing Joe O. and Matt slamming on all the things Murph.

I see why you're so well respected....I don't think you could be more correct. I apologize for questioning you - they do need some new, DIFFERENT, talent injected into the station. Your "hostile and nerdy" line is PERFECT - seems that most on the air at the station are either trying to BE Bernstein or broadcasting in fear of what his take would be. While Buffone and Van Lier and Shaer and Murph and Les and Terry and Dan and all the other "era before this one was totally different than this one" guys had their faults, there is no debating that the station had so much more flavor and variety.

Dolphin, most people would not have hired North, but the original owners did. Don't forget though, it was a small company, answerable to... don't even know if publicly held.

Furthermore, North was buying time for a weekend show. As "out there" as he was, he really wasn't THAT out there. "Out there" would be like Wild Bill (rip,) who never saw the inside of a radio station. The only one with solid credentials was Jiggs and maybe Schaer.

Not that any of this stuff matters.You've a station that's been on 15-odd years, with Boers, Mac, Hanley, (recently) Murph from the original cast. North's departure was not THAT long ago. How long has it been since Offman & Fred were tossed? Your original update guys!

Now, do you shitcan 'em for you're being able to guess what they'll bring on a given day? CBS has shareholders and advertisers. Tell 'em you're giving Goff, Drinky and all the update guys weekday slots and see what the pushback is.

Score Search, I thought, was a sponsored thing. C'mon, do you think something like a Dewars promotion would bring in somebody edgy? Geez, a lot of the update talent are from Shadow.

I can tune in WFAN tomorrow and get immediately petrified of boredom from Boomer Esiason. Not saying I listen to him -- I'm saying he can bore me to stone in minutes. Mike & Mike are pretty bad (takes em awhile to bore me to tears. A little more than 1/2 hour.) Dan Patrick IMHO always was bad (sorry, Shark.)

Anything you listen to on a daily basis for 4 hours, every week, is bound to get stale, but quick.
