I will not believe this until illin08181 or whatever his name is, posts a link from mlb.com, or espn, or cbs sportsline.

Cubs release Doug Davis
EmailPrintComments
ESPNChicago.com
CHICAGO -- A day after giving up 12 hits and 10 earned runs in a loss to the San Francisco Giants, pitcher Doug Davis was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs.

ESPNChicago.com Cubs blog
The latest news and notes on the Cubs. Blog

The move makes room for second baseman Darwin Barney, who comes off the disabled list after missing time with a sprained left knee.

With starters Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner on the disabled list, the Cubs signed the veteran Davis to a minor league contract on April 12. He went 1-7 with a 6.50 ERA in nine starts.

Barney, who was placed on the DL after injuring his knee when sliding head first into home on June 13 against the Milwaukee Brewers, is batting .294 with a home run and 27 RBIs.

Barney has been wearing a brace on his knee during his rehab stint with Triple-A Iowa and is expected to keep using it upon his return to the big leagues. While Barney says the brace doesn't impede his ability to play, he says he knows it's there.

Other than that 1 start where he actually got his first win vs. the Yankees 2 weeks ago at Wrigley, Doug Davis has been just as awful in the Cubs' rotation as fellow lefty John Russell. I wonder if Rodrigo Lopez is far behind...

Not released...DFA. He will be pitching in AAA in a few days once he clears waivers. Who is the 5th big league starter now though? Lopez?

Lopez and Davis are not "big league" starters despite being the Cubs roster.

How many pitchers are in the Sox rotation again?

It was 6, until John Danks landed on the DL with that injury to his strained oblique last Saturday vs. the Nationals.

Currently 5, but it has been 6 TRUE big league pitchers.

Imagine if Matt Vasgersian, now with MLB Network, called Cubs' games instead of Len Kasper...Talk about dull, dull, dull!

With such a dearth of pitching in the organization it's unbelievable they only drafted 2 pitchers in the first 10 rounds this year. The top pick being a 4th round closer.

If you needed more reason to fire Hendry, having Davis and Lopez as your starters in a doubleheader should be more than enough.

Unconditional release. He is officially gone.

Drinky said they kept him around to get his 10 years of service. That is a slap in the face of the fans keeping that loser around to get that. You were pretty much an automatic "L" when he pitched, so he should have been gone weeks ago.

He could have gotten his service on the fucking DL, that is stupid if its the reason.

To late:

Yankees Acquire Sergio Mitre
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 29 at 9:14pm CST]
Sergio Mitre is heading back to the Bronx. The Yankees acquired the right-hander from the Brewers for cash considerations, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (on Twitter). Milwaukee designated Mitre for assignment Monday and he has since drawn interest from other teams.

Mitre, 30, has posted a 3.27 ERA in 33 innings since Milwaukee acquired him from the Yankees for Chris Dickerson in March. The right-hander has a 14K/10BB ratio with a typically high 50.9% ground ball rate in his return to the National League.

So who is pitching every 5th day? Now that Russell is settled in his role as a lefty in the pen where he isn't bad at all are they back to him having to start? Sharky?

Lopez I imagine. Batting practice.

Glorious. I would have liked to have seen McNutt, but his arm is about as blown up as you can get without being on the DL. If he isn't hurt then he has an absurd pitch count. 3 innings last time he pitched.

No sign of Cashner either and I don't see any other decent starting pitching prospects on the farm. Big surprise there.
