The Sox low water mark was May 6 when they were 11-22 (worst record in baseball). Since then they have gone 30-20 (.600). If they continue to play at that pace they will win 88 games which should be enough to win the division.

It's hard to believe they've played that well over the last 50 games considering how awful some have played so it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that they can continue to play at this current pace.

No doubt the division is there for the taking if they can continue to play at a .600 clip. But the way things go for them it is just as good of a possibility that they go 20-30 over the next 50.

When the White Sox begin to beat teams WITHIN the Division, it will be time to pay attention.

Agreed. You can't win anything unless you can play decently against the Twins, Royals and Tigers.

big series against the Royals and Twins coming up. Hopefully the White Sox are starting to heat up now.

I know I'm not telling you something Keyser when I point to Ozzie's historically bad second halves as a concern about them keeping up .600 baseball.

I'm well aware but they have actually been playing consistent baseball over the last 50+ games rather than going on a crazy binge of wins like they have in the past. If they just continue to win series they could have a comfortable lead going into September.

i think the sox are the front runners to win the division.... dunn can not play worse..if he does he will not get many at bats...quentin is due to heat up and so is rios... i think 86 wins takes this division and i like the sox to win 89 games..detroit pitching will not old up and the sox have the best bullpen...the sox pen is just starting to put things together

They are basically a one man rotation, albeit the best pitcher in the game. Penny is a bum, and Porcello and Scherzer have been getting lit up like Nort's X-mas tree. Maybe Charlie Furbush (by cracky, by cracky) can be their savior, but I doubt it.

Good Point....If you take out the games VS the National league, where is that record?? It fooled a lot of Sox fans last year, when they went on the run VS the National League. Now the same is happening (to a lesser degree perhaps) this season. The biggest factor is how they play VS teams in their own division. that tends to determine the divisional titles much moreso than a couple weeks against the other league.

Steve, you're a baseball guy. Did you think that runner should have been safe the way Beckham came across the bag on the double play?

Did I miss something? His observations are obvious and shallow. My wife can analyze baseball as well as he can, and she hates baseball.

Put his politics aside, Chus. He does know the game and he's a Cub fan. That's why I'm interested in his answer.

Who said anything about politics? Believe it or not, I have the ability to separate politics from other issues. I told you in that other thread about the extremely conservative guy (he isn't alone) with whom I bowl, golf, and hit the 19th hole. I'm talking strictly about his baseball thoughts. Making obvious points, and getting facts wrong more often than not, is not great baseball analysis.

He is a master of the obvious, but it hasn't been my experience that he often gets facts wrong.

Anyway, it seems you and I are mightily outnumbered when it come to the way that double play was called. I was interested in hearing from a Cub fan who I know has watched a ton of games.

Bacon was definitely off the bag, but this wasn't the first time, nor the last time that call will be made. I just find it hilarious how the same people who slam Hawk when he whines about a call, are doing the same thing, as if that play cost them the game. Try hitting the ball out of the infield a few times.

There's no doubt he didn't have the bag and the ball at the same time. It's just that generally that call is made exactly the way it was. It wasn't some big controversial play.

I think the problem people- particularly those that aren't Sox fans- have with Hawk is that if a play goes against the Sox he won't shut up about it for the duration of the game. If it goes the other way, he's stone cold silent. I'm all for having a "homer" as an announcer. I want my guy pulling for the team. But he should also be honest. Hawk is hypocritical far too often.

Early in the year, he was criticizing Ozzie for using Ohman too much. He had only appeared in three games, had a total of less than 3 IP, and two of the three appearances were in mop up duty (one huge lead, one huge deficit).

I wasn't expecting the whining to start here. I just asked Steve a question. I thought he would have the right answer. Since you're a Cub fan and you view it reasonably, I'm satisfied.

Yes he probably should be by the letter of the rules. But the way the game is called really has the safety of the player (fielder) in mind and if you are "in the neighborhood" you usually get the call. On tag plays in many games guys never actually tag the runner, but tag quickly in the area of the runner and move the glove before contact is made, avoiding any possibility of the ball being jarred loose. I have no real issue with the call.

He was off the bag...i don't care. He could have and should have been on the bag. I'm pissed the fucking team hitting couldn't figure out a way not to hit into a god damn should be double play.
