Jose Serra signed Castro out of the Dominican Republic. Wilken had nothing to do with it.

So the head of scouting had nothing to do with having him signed? Some lower level scout just did it because he felt like it?

They have US and International scouting departments. Tim Wilken is head of the US scouting department. Paul Weaver is head of the international scouting department. Castro is a product of the international scouting department.

Welcome to the DL any pitcher that is on the ML roster. Riggins sucks.

I really wish they would work out a way to drop the trade invoked guarantee of Ramirez so they can trade him already. He is actually hitting and would be attractive to a team. DJ is raking at around.380 since his reassignment to AAA. I want to see him play everyday at the big league level....let me rephrase that...I want to see him play against big league pitching. (I wouldn't qualify anything done under Quade as big league level.

Ramirez is gone. But you have to wait to the deadline where some team would overpay a bit for him for a stretch run. Look for the Tigers to trade for him.

They have a huge hole in LF....please take Byrd too.....and send back minor league LHP Casey Crosby.

I wouldn't mind at least seeing what Lahair can do at the big league level for half a season. He is 28 and past his prospect prime....but that doesn't matter right now. He is hitting .370 with 23 bombs and 65 driven in over half a minor league season. Why not at least see if it translates. He has only had 1 shot at the majors in 08 with the Mariners and wasn't terrible.

He serves no purpose hitting like that in AAA. See if it translates...and if it doesn't send him back.

I think Pena will be traded at the deadline (or at least should be without a problem), so hopefully we will see him. Still don't think he is a long term solution anywhere.

I doubt he is long term, but with those numbers and at age 28 I am willing to take a shot in the dark at him. It wouldn't hurt to get a long look at him at the big league level. The power is fine....but I like that he has that huge average to go with it....and his career minor league numbers are always good. Maybe he is a butcher and a half in the field.

Jackson hit 2 solo home runs tonight to lead the Smokies to a 2-1 10th inning victory over Montgomery. The pitcher for Montgomery that gave up the game winner has a last name of Quate. That is a bad omen.

I don't see Ramirez waiving his no trade. Wouldn't surprise me if they resign him for 2 yrs 20M and then he gets off to shitty starts again and kills the team.

It's on Quade. He extended Mateo 4x than he had all year. Shockingly, he hurt himself. Quade is in so over his head. He either drastically over or under manages every single scenario

Glorious evaluation Hendry and minor league scouting staff. Fernando Perez who was acquired in the Garza deal has already been released.

Fangraphs midseason review of top prospects. It's not very flattering.

1. Brett Jackson, OF
2. Trey McNutt, RHP
3. Chris Carpenter, RHP
4. Josh Vitters, 3B
5. Jay Jackson, RHP
6. Rafael Dolis, RHP
7. Hayden Simpson, RHP
8. Robinson Lopez, RHP
9. Reggie Golden, OF
10. Austin Reed, RHP

The Cubs’ Top 10 list has changed a lot because of off-season trades that occurred after many of the Top 10 lists had gone to print (Baseball America, Goldstein, Sickels). It’s not really a strong system, especially after the trade, and I had Jackson at No. 1. If he can curb the K problems (31%) then he should be a solid everyday outfielder, but probably not a star. After a breakout 2010 season, McNutt has had a down year in double-A and has been hampered by injury. Carpenter made his MLB debut in 2010 but he’s had an up-and-down year due to control issues. Jackson is pretty close to hitting rock bottom and his best hope for a MLB career is probably the bullpen. Vitters has yet to learn the value of patience (3.1% walk rate), which is a shame because it really is diminishing his ceiling. Golden is off to a nice start in short-season ball. The remainder of the Top 10 has been pretty disappointing. Like a few others I didn’t rank Matt Szczur on the Top 10 and, honestly, I still don’t know what to make of him

Just more reason to axe Hendry/Wilkens. Wilkens had a good rep. WTF happened?

Carpenter down to Iowa today so Big Z can return to the active roster. I would have dumped ortiz or lopez and kept the kid up but god forbid Hendry or Quade step on the toes of a guy trying to get his service time in so he can get the full pension.

i am kinda glad...carpenter may have a bright future..i do not want hendry or riggins or quade getting in that kids ear...bring him up next year when there is a real legit pitching coach and manager and g.m.
