If you SIGN UP, most MLB teams will send you a letter telling you when OPEN TRYOUT DAY IS!

MAYBE, They personalized it to Larry, but for Larry to even think or mislead everyone that any team knew who he was, is 100% wrong.

My friend who then PLAYED at UIC and is in some of their recordbooks, only got 1 look by Colorado and this guy was really good!

Would tell you I could hit and throw better than him and I didn't PLAY all the time.

Because MLB teams are always scouting 21 year old, 5'7", catchers with krones disease who played on a Club team at an inner city school!

Let me compare a friend of mine who played at Northwestern. All State in HS at 2B his Junior Year and SS his Senior year. Got scholarships from Stanford, ASU and Northwestern. Chose NU due to issues with his father's cancer and stayed close to home.

He played 1B in college and was Big 10 MVP.

He was drafted in the 40th round! 40th! And this guy has every credential you could ever want.

Larry got a form a letter that he provided the address for!

Almost everyone here could have got a letter inviting you to an "OPEN TRYOUT"

Once again, it's OPEN!

It's funny. Larry brags about this bullshit story that he close to being in MLB. But you never hear him brag about "The Hamp and Holmes show". That was actually real. Look at these two great athletes.

Does anyone remember Larry starring in high school? A guy I used to be friends with was a really good player at Sullivan in the late 70s at a time when Sullivan had a really good program. (Dewey Robinson is Rogers Park!) Anyway, this guy was invited to all kinds of tryouts. He for sure could have played A ball and he probably would have hit there. He wasn't the smartest guy I ever met, but he was a damn good ballplayer. Still, he was smart enough to know that nobody was interested in him playing baseball other than as one of the 20 dopes they needed to fill out a Rookie League roster that had five legitimate prospects. And I'm pretty sure Larry wasn't that good.

Larry was, by virtue of the fact that he was at vaunted Homewood-Flossmoor for its student radio, an A/V club dork in high school. Now, don't get me wrong: it's possible to wear many hats in high school. I was in theatre, band, and mock trial! But the odds of Larry being a product of H-F student radio aaaaaand a preps star in baseball on a professional trajectory are, well,

Here ya go, wanna tryout? http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20110203&content_id=16564152&vkey=pr_fla&fext=.jsp&c_id=fla

Will use my other buddy who was actually told to transfer to UIC from U of I, by a Scout, so when teams came in to town, people could see him play. I don't know how many scouts ever came top see him play, but he did get a LETTER from the Rockies to come and tryout in OPEN Tryouts.

This is a guy who played in a real program, in top 10 for Avg and HR's in all time stats at UIC. Only other 2 guys, 1 drafted and in minors right now , the other Curtis Granderson.

All this and my buddy got a tryout with the Rockies at age 22.

It'd be hilarious if this board had a dude who paraded around defending Larry, stalking members, and creating hilarious rumors-that-are-actually-facts-but-no-not-really. Hope someone can step up to the plate on this one.

I suggest a member name of Lazy Iban. It'll be great. Really liven up this board.

(crosses fingers for such a dbag to man up/cowboy up/bring it)

I can honestly say that I have never heard DePaul referred to as an "inner city school".

Almost always referred to as such in recruiting battles. Same with St Johns.

While I was doing that I was playing baseball for the DePaul Club team. I even had a couple minor-league tryouts with: The Marlins, Braves and Expos (moment of silence)

From his Bio! These are not letters, he got tryouts.

Now if he attended the OPEN TRYOUTS, then SHARK could go and do the same thing.

Big Fan has it right. It's an attempt to mislead to build himself up to impress people and make himself feel important. Every MLB team has tryouts. Larry wrote a couple of teams, they wrote him back telling him when the tryouts were being held. Nothing more than that. Now for the rest of Larry's life he gets to tell people that he was invited to a MLB camp. Techically, not a lie. But technically, it's another thing that makes Larry an oily douchebag.

If he was that good, he'd have gotten a baseball scholarship to some college. Not play for some club team at DePaul. It's really that simple.

When did Larry say that he "wrote a couple of teams"?

Big Fan had mentioned that Larry had wrote teams early in this thread. I went by that. Then a few posts ago Big Fan corrected himself by citing Larry's bio. He just went to some open to the public tryout.

Almost all MLB teams have open tryouts. You need to contact them in order to get into such tryout and show some experience. Playing HS baseball is usually enough, but you need to provide your info for them to send you back an invite. While it is open, you don't just show up.

I feel safe in saying Larry did not get an unsolicited personalized letter from any MLB to come and try out.

Also, per the original thread Larry said he got letters, in his bio he said he went to 3 camps to try out.

We all know he is trying to create the illusion he was really good and close to MLB talent level. When in reality he was not close to Single A level.

P.S. My 6 year old nephew got a letter from the Bears for "Family day" at Soldier Field to come and "TRY OUT"

larry could have made the majors as a bat boy. or the kid that runs behind the ump to collect wild pitches/foul balls. he should be called out by drinky or goff, somebody please call out this liar. he should consider himself EXTREMELY LUCKY to have the job he has because he is not very good at it. talk about your comic book collection, your wrestling heros, your lust for local female broadcasters, but don't talk about how the braves wanted you to come try out for their team or how good of a college baseball player you were.

I think that bigfan is a bit of a buggerer, in terms of running this board, but hot damn if you can't get behind his hatred of Larry .... well, make like a tree and get outta here!!! LOVE IT.

How this guy has a radio show is a TRUE mystery to me. It's scary that he has actual 'fans'. He should host Larry Holmes Fan Outing and we should send out the men with the butterfly nets to round up ANYONE that shows up.

Terry Boers made up MLB sources from when he covered the NBA 25 years ago tell him that scouts were drooling over Larry.

The only problem is that these scouts were looking to cast a Different Strokes spin off where Arnold goes to college.
Gary Coleman was holding out for more money.

Eventually Larry agreed to the gig but was talked out of it by then girlfriend Alyssa Milana whom Larry states he still dates on Facebook. He also reports that the actor who played the brother on Who's the Boss now hosts White Sox pre and post game shows.

That kid brother was named Danny and was at a wedding I was at. He was good friends with the bride and was that "Male best friend" who was jealous of the total meathead marrying the girl, kinda ripped the groom in his speech sayin he wasnt sure if there would be a wedding if the Cubs played that night! Even though he was still G AY, you could tell he was not a fan of the groom.

I remember when RPB told me the Bears contacted him about a tryout after seeing him play Flag Football in high school.

He feels a kinship with "L Ho" on another level now.

While I didn't agree with Beardown's take on Laurence's return (the surgery speech), I can't really defend Holmes on this one.
