I've never done a proper show thread so forgive me here, but like, I just turned it on and Spiegel announced that he has a new deal. Cue the obligatory "A lot of people out there are throwing down their headsets" mention from him. That's right, you didn't want it but Dan did so you've got it: MORE SPIEGEL!

Goff is in for the On-Siesta Dan McNeil, and I have no idea what the hell they're going to talk about other than bad baseball.

This show thread brought to you by PANDORA INTERNET RADIO, a proud sponsor of the 9am-1pm sports-talk-radio scene in Chicago!

I'm trying to wrap my concept around the head of "more Spiegel" and what it entails.

Probably some sort of breaded deep-fried meat, forced pseudo-intellectualism, cover songs, and communities coming together to knit a quilt large enough to cover him at night. Now he's got his "fuck you" contract, as the Score has weathered two years of him being a major part of one of their flagship shows and for whatever reason he's still there... It's gotta be because Danny Mac loves having a sycophant around, you know, someone who's gonna be perpetually thankful for getting him a gig outside of the radio-purgatory of sporting news radio and never challenges him or pushes him too hard. Meat is someone who will never challenge the direction of the show or provide any sort of entertainment potentially beyond that of DaMaNeel, thus establishing him as the alpha male who always looks good/better by comparison.

Personally I bet he's an OK enough guy and as BigFan said you'd have a good time drinking some wine with him and rah rah rah... but still, I just wish there was someone better than him in the role. Someone, who when some sports stuff goes down, you'd go "man, I can't wait to hear what [they] think[s] about that" and thus make it appointment radio... Someone who could perhaps push Danny Mac a bit out of his comfort zone at times when it turns into a Danny Macentric wankfest about topics that appeal to pudgy ~50 year old men whose chests haven't seen sunlight since the Reagan administration.

Ah well, c'est la vie. I hear some moderately outraged/ranting Goff providing DA FIRE AND DA PASHIN to Spiegel's straight-man (prolly cuz nothing gay would come within 10 feet of him) so I reckon it's time to relegate it to the background.

I agree your take about his relationship with mac... but in all honesty does mac do this for anyone anymore?
"man, I can't wait to hear what [they] think[s] about that" The only person who falls under that category for me is Bernstein, and even that is hit or miss more often than is use to be.

Meat interacts differently with mac, and it's unfortunate... if those two had the interactions that meat and rozner have, or meat and goff seem to have, then the show would appeal to more of the masses. He needs to cool the plethora of different disingenuous laughs he feeds mac, and he needs to cut the real signing during the show IMO; that shit seems to annoy more people than just us on the board.

But even with his faults, he is still infinitely more entertaining than the alternatives. Listening to Grote and Rosenbloom last week trying desperately to be memorable and interesting and failing miserably made me appreciate more what Meat brings to the table. I enjoy the show and have never once thought of going back to espn once the show started 2 years ago...

Ditto. I tuned out long ago & very seldom listen to Der Schnore between 9:00 & 6:00 anymore.
When Dahl signs on with WGN later this year I will begin listening to the Stever again.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong... Mac and Spiegel will always win out by default cuz I can't fuck with Waddle. I can't do it... there's just no way. Combine him with Silverman's voice which makes you want to blow YOUR nose, and like, it's just untenable.

It was originally a gif of "Shower Shoes" taking his header.

I know it's a terrible tragedy, but the video of the incident shows absolutely nothing. He vanishes behind the wall. I'm not sure why there was outrage that the media showed the video on newscasts. I could understand not showing the impact if that was caught on video.

That's exactly where Dahl belongs- the station for old ladies where he can be what he is, which is everything he laughed at and mocked when he was actually relevant. Enjoy!

Many of the "old ladies" who are listening to WGN grew up when Dahl was popular, but Stever was never big with the ladies. His demo is pretty close to that of WSCR.

I don't know if that's true or not, but if so, it certainly isn't by design. I'm sure the Score is chasing the coveted 18-34 demo and I highly doubt Dahl has many listeners under 40. The man thinks LoHo increases his hipness factor for God's sake! That's what I call out of touch.

Does Johnny B also make your list of radio has-beens who you think will return to their former glory? (Coppock, North, Dahl, etc.)

He made sure his daughter danced with Wayne Coyne now maybe he can get Dahl to take her to the prom.

Does his contract that was paying him to do nothing run out on 7/31?

My brother is a big Bubba the Love Sponge fan, as such, I accompanied him up to Milwaukee for a meet-n-greet @ the Dave and Busters up there back in early-mid June.

Bubba said during his de-facto "State of the Bubba" address that one of the people he's been talking with about trying to sign for his channels on radioio.com is Steve Dahl.

That's right, good ol Steve Dahl is at least kicking the tires on the idea of going over to LIVE INTERNET RADIO and having a show on somebody else's channel (Bubba 2).

Whenever you hear Laurence do his "[Caller] is on the Score, and wants to talk about [subject]" know that this is likely the most lasting impact of Steve Dahl on Chicago radio. There are no more "shock jocks" or "edgy" talk shows with a bunch of failed television shows, there's just some little (literally) half-wit like Laurence carrying on with stupid college-radio-caliber devices like that because "Steve Dahl did it, and I think he knows a LITTLE more about radio than you"

I like spiegs and I like mac. However the two of them together is the problem. I think it is because spiegs is afraid to push mac's buttons because he owes his job to mac. jurko and harry did not. boers did not. so they would challenge him. spiegs needs to more, but i am sure that he owes this contract to mac as well as last years. In my youth i called my boss a jackass one day, and that was my last day there. Maybe spiegs thinks the same will happen to him.
