i'll paraphrase a quote from the oscar-nominated screenwriter of "A History of Violence", Josh Olson, back when he was Bad Cog on the AOL Writer Message boards, regarding "Menace II Society"...i only remember it because it was true, and because it was fuckin hilarious.

Menace II Society is the result of two white-bred "black men" who were raised in the suburbs and wanted to cash in on the "black ghetto" movie sub-genre. it's a piece of shit.

Menace II Society was funny and had a lot of memorable lines...but as a film it was not good.

The Grandpa was terrible. The character devolopment was lacking. The most compelling character, O-Dog, wasnt explored enough IMO.

Anyways for me its

Boyz in the Hood
New Jack City
Juice

Everything else

Although, I did like South Central a lot.

good list. yes, i agree with you on menace. i actually don't hate it or anything like that screenwriter did but i did think it was over the top; and like you said, it's kinda funny. mainly because it takes itself so seriously.

i remember when s&e gave it two enthusiastic thumbs up and i think they were kinda sucked into the whole ghetto culture thing. at least in "boyz in the hood" it was real, and it came from a guy who captured it in a raw way, the way "kids" did with white trash kids in NYC.

Blood In Blood Out. Man that is a blast from the past. Very good movie that a lot of
people likely missed out on. Worth a viewing if you can find it. I'll never forget the
rival gang members busting up the main characters brothers back on that fire hydrant ( at least
I think that is how it went ). I haven't seen that movie in well over 15 years. Only
thing worse that that was the curbstomping from American History X.
