Yeah, but it was just joked about. Not taken seriously or anything crazy like that...

I watched way too much television as a kid. :(

Favorite though is the saved by the bell drinking and driving toga party episode.

The Rosanne episode that sticks out in my mind is the one where the serial killer kid got busted with "porn", which turned out to be Darlene's comic books. The special lesson learned however was when Dan beat the fuck out of Jackie's boyfriend because he was smacking her around.

Television websites such as Television Without Pity and jumptheshark.com deride the phrase. In an episode of Friends, Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) mocked the ubiquitous NBC commercials that popularized the phrase ("A very special Blossom"); Perry himself appeared in "a very special episode" of Growing Pains earlier in his career, playing Carol Seaver's teenage boyfriend who dies of injuries sustained in a car accident after a night of underage drinking.

Diff'rent Strokes featured some very special episodes that involved child molesting, pedophilia, hitchhiking, kidnapping, epileptic seizure, bigotry, bullies, racism, bulimia, drunk driving and drug abuse.

I didn't think it was jerking off. I thought DJ refused to go up in front of the class because he kept popping boners.

The Roseanne I remember most is the tornado episode.

By the way, great thread, Boyd. Love this trip down memory lane.

Nah, there was a wacking off episode. His sister was teasing him and said "I heard DJ got in trouble for playing with his instrument in band" (audience laughter) to which DJ replied "I'm not even in band, stupid (more audience laughter). Can't really remember the outcome of that episode though...

The DJ Tanner "Anorexia" episode of Full House was a good one.

Don't forget that Briscoe flees the scene because he fell off the wagon that day after witnessing an execution.

As I understand the topic, there were many in the All in the Family. A pretty decent one was when Sammy Davis Jr. kissed Archie. There was a great one about the a son's love for his father where Archie kind of loses it. good dolphin has spoken in positive tones about the show. He might have a better one or two.

You guys are referencing stuff I stopped watching as I got older. Exception was Diff Strokes but I don't remember a special episode.

They had a bunch of good ones:

The Gloria "Rape" episode.
The Edith "Rape" episode.
The Swastika on the door episode.

Am I the only one that didn't know that Family Matters was a spin-off of Perfect Strangers?

In terms of in your face for 22 minutes it was quite a show.

Good Times had some shows that painted a good picture. The Jeffersons was funny, but not nearly as controversial I didn't think. What's Happening...not so much.

There was a show with a father, son and daughter and a male housekeeper that had similar episodes to the show with punky brewster. Anyhow, the only thing that really showed real life stuff was when the daughter died of a drug overdose when she was about 17.

It was actually a spin off of Die Hard 2. Die Harder.

Yes

The mom was the elevator operator at the place where Cousin Larry and Balki worked.

There were a lot of episodes from this show that would likely qualify if you thought of it in
a broad sense. On the actual show I think Kevin gets drunk once and there was an episode
in which the Arnolds have an X-mas party and one of Jack's old buddies gets caught smoking
weed in the basement.

I always liked where the brother would leave the door open for Kevin and then start driving away as he was about to get in and then stop for a minute and let him catch up and then do it again. That's never not funny.

True. Kevin took an awful lot of verbal abuse from Wayne on that show as well. I am
surprised his family didn't eventually start calling him butthead.

I always like the Family Ties where Tom Hanks played Uncle Ned (the mom's brother) and was a raging alcoholic.

Raided the pantry and pounded a bottle of vanilla extract

the annoying therapist along with the cheap shot jokes at awkward times hampered it but it's the best acting job i've ever seen michael j. fox do.

ned donnelly's return visit is my pick ("Say Uncle"). that episode was pitch perfect.
