amirite?

Basically, I was just thinking about this a few days ago when I was bored...

What were some movies that totally threw you as far as...you weren't expecting the hero to die, or the bad guy wins, or the ending is sad instead of happy...

I'm not talking about movies that have a twist at the end, per se. Like, "I didn't think it'd be kevin spacey!" I mean, it broke your heart when this twist happened.

I guess this goes without saying...THERE WILL BE SPOILERS IN THIS THREAD

My first example is "Glory". I was 10 when I saw it, and at the time I expected all my movies to end happily and so I figured the North would win the battle...and what happens??? jesus christ...fucking everybody dies!!! I didn't just cry...I wailed. I was inconsolable for an hour after seeing it.

Other examples...the ending of "Pet Sematary"...it was the first Stephen King movie I watched, and from then on I thought every King story or movie would end in a depressing way. More times than not I was right.

"My Girl"...this fun little coming of age story that's all cute and kinda funny...and thomas jay ...DIES??? WTF?

Other ones I guess would be "Old Yeller", "Casablanca"...

So what are yours?

Glory would be a good one. I remember thinking the ending of American Beauty was depressing, although I wouldnt change it and really wouldnt know how else to end that movie.

"War of the Roses" was interesting. I just kept assuming that they'd reunite. The ending wound up being perfect though.

I wished the movie "The Natural" kept the book's ending.

I couldnt believe it when Josh Brolin was killed. Was settling in for a nice showdown scene between him and Bardem, then blam, he's dead.

Not that it was sad by any means, but I remember how surprised I was when Steven Seagal was killed off really early in Executive Decision...completely ruined that movie for me.

Easy Rider--Couple of shit kickers blow away Hopper and Fonda

Cool Hand Luke--I guess one could see this coming but I still thought he might get away and find some peace living his life somewhere.

Rainman--Thought they end up living together.

The Mist--Guys kills his son and a couple other people in his car to prevent them being eaten alive by huge monsters. Then, he goes out of his car to face his fate of being devoured only to discover the armed forces have arrived and have saved the day.

This is going to be a recurring issue in this thread. The protagonists and characters the audience identify with die frequently in factual or fact-based movies. "The Doors," "Glory," "300," etc.

I'd say "The Departed." Almost everybody, good or bad, is picked off at the end of that one.

that's a great one, ziz. i felt that was one of the ballsiest endings i've seen in a hollywood film...i can't believe that wasn't just an "alternate ending" you'd see on a DVD. it almost saved the whole movie in my opinion; but too much in act two that just didn't add up in credibility among the characters put a huge damper on it.

The end of The Game soured me on thrillers for a while.

I saw In the Bedroom, not really knowing much about it going in. That was quite a thing that happens like 20 mins in.

Something didnt sit right with how Pesci got done in Casino

Honestly, the first time I saw Boyz in the Hood, I was sure Cube was gonna die, not Ricky

I was also dissapointed in the ending of Bad News Bears

If you follow the story beyond the borders of the movie, it was detailed on the Stern show that Henry went into a hillbilly bar in Arkansas, had something slipped in his drink and got Deliverence treatment.
