He may still end up getting the same amount on a different team. I thought there was no way in hell another team would give him $4M. If he is as healthy as they say he has been since the end of last season then this looks a little worse. Spencer is injury prone and no one knows how long it will take him to learn the offense. Martz is likely going to be gone next season so the Bears could be starting all over again.

Except he's done if for most of the last 3 seasons.

At this point, Spencer isn't even starting...

Brad Biggs wrote:
Tice sets Bears' starting five O-line, unless they 'falter'

BOURBONNAIS -- There aren’t snaps on the ground like there were the first day of training camp.

The run blocking has been solid since pads went on last Monday.

Mike Tice has seen enough, to this point, to declare his starting five on the offensive line, something that would seem to make it challenging for newcomer Chris Spencer to crack the lineup. Tice said that unless one of his five starters “falters” what he has now is the line the team will use in five weeks when the regular season opens Sept. 11 against the Atlanta Falcons at Soldier Field.

That means Roberto Garza will remain at center with Chris Williams at left guard and Lance Louis at right guard. J’Marcus Webb is the left tackle with rookie first-round pick Gabe Carimi set at right tackle. Tice already calls Carimi an “elite run blocker.”

This doesn’t mean Spencer, who signed a $6 million, two-year contract, will be riding the bench. But it does speak to how Tice feels about the job the starting five has done to this point, particularly the play of Louis, who started the first four games a year ago.

“I’ve got, I think right now, the five best guys on the field and we’re going to stay that way until something proves me I’m wrong,” Tice said.

Asked several times to clarify the situation, Tice repeated himself.

“I have five guys in there starting,” he said. “Unless they falter, that's who's opening the season against Atlanta."

So, nothing is set in stone but it appears the Bears want to move toward a decision sooner rather than later. Clearly, Garza has done a solid job at center. The Bears made five lineup changes on the line in the first eight games last season. Settling on one early would be a considerable help based on how the team felt the unit played when it settled in.

One primary reason not to rule Spencer out at center? Moving Garza to right guard could allow him to work alongside the inexperienced Carimi. The Bears felt Garza did a nice job alongside Webb last season and might want to have a veteran influence next to the right tackle.

But for now, the five are set.

So, is Garza now the center? If he is, then haven't the Bear essentially weakened two positions with this move?

I agree. Chris Williams has no business being in the starting lineup, let alone being on an NFL roster. As for Center, I gotta believe that Spencer will be the eventual starter. Either way this OL is very risky with lots of question marks.
Its a good thing Jay dropped a few pounds & is lighter on his feet because he is going to need those feet to scramble.

Crap on a cracker, you are more negative than I am. None of them are great but this is what they have and they have to make do with it.

Williams got better after they moved him and as the year went on. I'm hoping he is motivated this year because it is make it or break it for him.

Actually, I am very optimistic about the Bears this year...much more so than last year. A buddy & I went to Bears camp last week & Williams looks absolutely dreadful though. I PREDICT...that he will be benched & the Bears will cut him lose after this season.

Well, if he was supposed to be awful at left guard, he sure as shit did a good job last year.

I don't doubt it and I do think he will be a bust but am willing to give him the first few games of this year. He really shouldn't be on the left side.

The SCORE/WBBM Newsradio's Zach Zaidman is on with Mac & Spiegs now to tell us that Jay Cutler may be more comfortable with converted right guard Roberto Garza than Chris Spencer...Hmmm...

wrong ..kreutz can't shotgun..that is why the bears almost always had the q.b. under center

I think the coaching staff may be telling Angelo FUCK YOU the only way they can. I don't think it was reasonable to expect Spencer to get up to speed on the offense in a short period of time. I like that 5. I was high on Lance Louis last year and Webb appears to have a bright future. I'm also confident in Martz getting the best out of these guys.

Maybe. I like Louis and Williams. They're bigger and more mobile that Garza too. Garza is a vet so he will be fine.

The Bears have done a poor job with the guy. They've continued to move him around the field without allowing him to get comfortable. He looked good at RT his first season playing and then they moved him to LT and LG the following season.

You are the opposite of Scorehead. It might be because he is not really good. He was a first rd LT pick. He is a bust for that. He might be a good enough RG though, and I think this is his last year to prove it.

In my world that's the ultimate compliment. I don't think a guy is a but just because he didn't stick to where you drafted him. If he turns out to be a great G then it was a good pick.

i don't think williams belongs on an nfl roster..too soft and very slow out of his stance..huge bust, doubt he plays by mid season at all at any position

It's a problem when you have 5 people that can only play on the right side.

A lot of people feel that way about Williams. They might be right but I hope not.

Is Williams nasty? No. Is he mobile? Yes. Can he block? Yes. Does it take time getting comfortable at a new position? Yes. He'll be fine. I trust Tice.
