Not sure if a topic already exists about this show.

Just started watching it on netflix and I'm about 5 episodes in. Great show so far. Was anyone else here a fan? I would spend a weekend flying through the rest of the episodes if I had the time. Why didn't it end up lasting on TV?

I watched the original run, and finished the series for a second time when I was laying on the couch yesterday.

The second season was a little meh to start, but it ended fairly strong (although it was a little open ended).

To answer your question of "why?", the reason was that the ratings sucked. They were fairly strong for the first half of the first season, then CBS, in their infinite wisdom, put the show on hiatus for 8 weeks, and no one really went back. A true story, the show got cancelled after the first season, but enough people complained to the network (and my understanding is that there were a lot of peanuts sent to the corporate office), they brought it back for a short run second season.

I remember reading about the fan protest. Just surprised it went away so fast after they brought it back.

The long mid season hiatus nearly derailed Lost when they were in their first couple seasons. These long story-arc shows can't do that shit. Once someone misses 1 episode, they really become lost in the storyline. The same thing happens with Fringe, and I think that's the biggest reason that show's ratings have dipped.

Getting moved to Friday nights probably doesn't help that either.

The funny thing about Jericho was, I got into it when I was stuck at home while I was having a floor replaced. I convinced the ex that she would like it, and I'm pretty sure it was the last show that we saw eye-to-eye on.

IIRC, the second season didn't start until February, and ended before May sweeps as well. They probably strategically did that to ensure the ratings would suck, and no one could bitch.

Revisit this after you finish the series, but to me, a great wrapup would have been either a movie, or a two-part TV movie to wrap the story up as a whole.

First season was great. Second season seemed forced and left too many things unanswered.

I remember the Sun Times' Phil Rosenthal blasting the series for "gruesome treatment of children on screen" from the pilot.

My only gripe with the show is the terrible children/teen acting. All of the adult storylines are great, the other stuff is brutal.

He was pissed because they showed the kids seeing the explosion.

It was silly.

Seriously.

I bet he doesn't even let his kid play flag football.

this is why it still amazes me that "babylon 5" was able to last the entire timeline that j. michael straczynski laid out. that is so rare especially for american TV. the guy plotted 5 seasons, he had 5 seasons done. no cancellations or anything. got to do a proper pilot and series finale. that's impressive. yeah the CGI sucked dick and some of the acting was wooden, but i was into the storyline pretty much the whole way through. and liked the conclusion.

too bad "firefly" didn't get that chance. but having "serenity" makes up for it.

I finally finished the series two days ago. Great show, but terrible ending. Everything was so rushed in the second season with only 7 episodes to squeeze everything in. These guys couldn't negotiate a 13 episode 2nd season? C'mon now.

Loved Jericho.

Fringe lost it's strong leadin with Bones. I watched it because it was the show after Bones and was hooked and actually liked it best.

Long hiatuses can cost a show. It's going to be interesting for example what happens with Bones with the late start and long hiatus til spring comeback due to lead actress being pregnant and only 13 episodes.

Babylon 5 Firefly both awesome.

Jericho seems like a show that TNT or USA would want to pick up.

I never liked Babylon 5, but genuinely enjoyed Firefly. There was some genuine thought involved with creating Josh Wheadon's world. Firefly was a show that just sounded stupid, but when you took the time to meet the characters and explore the world, you couldn't help get sucked in. I've never met a person who watched Firefly and wasn't pleasantly surprised.

Jericho had some similar elements. The writing was good, but the acting was subpar. Character development kept you hooked, but it was hard to really care about any one character for very long (except the kid that owned the Grocery Store).

Anyone watch Falling Skies? Now that is bad acting AND bad writing.

Damn straight.... Doctor Who is about to die from it, and what REALLY sucks is that it's going to happen 49 years after they started the whole damn show. If only they had the OOMPH to make it to 50.... =(

I made it through the 2 hours first night.

Then I realized that I wanted the aliens to kill everyone involved and stopped watching because I knew that wouldn't be the result.
