i know he has been nominated for oscars before and even won one, but i think Geoffrey Rush is phenomenal. lots of times when i mention him in conversations like this, people can only associate him with the "Pirates" movies, but he has done some great work outside that franchise. i think he is under-rated, but i guess it depends on your viewpoint.

again...like saying streep is underrated.

Underrated does not mean under the radar.

It means Under...rated

If MOFO thinks Kevin Spacey is the best actor in the world than he's clearly underrated in MOFO's world because he isnt usually thought of that high.

Same with Daniel Day Lewis.

If someone said MJ was a top 10 but not top 5 player they'd be underrating him.

Start an under the radar thread if you wish. :D

Jason Robards was underrated.

So GlenGary GlenRoss had 4 oscar winners and Baldwin and Harris who both have been nominatd.

Solid casting there.

Not sure if this would be DQ'd under Zack's stipulation, but Donald Sutherland would be another one IMO.

That would work for me almost solely based on his Good Will performance. In Reign Over Me earlier I saw Sandler try to reach that level and he couldnt. Might just be my impression though.

Its Pacino for me.

Aren't Pacino and DeNiro the McGwire/Sosa sorta in September of 1998 in that category?

if they're the talk of hollywood for a period, they're clearly not underrated. spacey, day-lewis, they get a ton of acclaim, and they've won awards for it. i would say they're perfectly rated.

Thats fine if you disagree. But being the talk of hollywood does not mean you cant be underrated.

Juliette Lewis is great. And I'm sure most of you guys will say "WHAT???!!!" but she's damn good looking when she gets dressed up too. She seems way cooler than most actresses.

I know you get this.

Spacey is known as a very good actor. If someone thinks he is the best American actor than he is underrated to that person.

Its not really anything you can argue. No matter how much of a movie buff you consider yourself to be, under and over rated is in the eye of the person making the post. There can be no wrong answer.

WZ,
There is a huge difference in being overrated/underrated, depending on who is doing the assessment.
Someone can be underrrated by the general public while being lauded by Hollywood and pseudo-intellectual,
self-proclaimed cinema experts like yourself.
