A few questions,

1.)I have an email address, someguy@company.com, it isn't a gmail, hotmail, yahoo or whatever and doesn't have it's own email server.

2.)I want to know if I can set it up with Windows Live Mail and if so how. Especially the server settings etc or at least how to find those out. You can use WLM as a client
acess all dedicated stuff like gmail, hotmail etc, but will it work with my email address above. Or do you need a dedicated server for it work.

Are you starting from scratch for a domain you own or are you just trying to figure out one that you already have that's hosted on windows live?

If you own a domain name, this is a free way to setup a full featured email account though it's obviously not windows live.

I have been using Windows LIVE mail for a little while now (linked two GMail addresses to it), and I have to say that I am not pleased.

Anyone else have any issues with receiving the same mail messages multiple times? The server also seems to freeze up on me every so often when I try to check my email.

Outlook seems to be better still, IMO.

I don't own a domain name.

I'm a rep and that is my email name, it's a small firm, someguy@company.com, was assigned to me, they will be purchasing me a copy of Outlook 2010, but I'm trying to get it to work with Live Mail and it isn't.

It's probably something technical, I do have Comcast, but who knows.

And so the question. You need a domain name but do you need a server? Besides email, what are you using/needing? Client web site? CRM? Shared notes/calendar? That might steer you to getting an el cheapo server (or a slice of one) from an ISP.

Okay, my suggestion is to go with the google offering. $5 a month is not bad, and it'll work with Outlook as well as through a web interface.

So, correct if I'm wrong, to use my "someguy@company.com", I would need to go through a gmail, hotmail,yahoo etc client? Windows Live Admin center lets you use a custom domain and then uses the hotmail client to provide the email etc. That is probably what I will have to do, correct?

No, see, what Microsoft is doing is selling you a domain name as a part of their deal. I didn't see what they're charging you for that, but they're charging something. Google's deal is $5 a month, and it looks like the domain name is buried in the cost.

Now, going over to GoDaddy, I see they're selling domain names for $11, and oddly enough are running a special for $1 on them (don't look at me!) Email... They got a "personal" web email (that works from your browser) service, that also supports blackberrys, iphones and android, for like another $1. But if you want the full facilities of Outlook (you know, the shared folders, calendaring, crap & cruft) that runs you $9 a month.

The more you ask, the more we answer. What was once a choice of one became a choice of two, and I added the third for grins. If you ask again, we'll give you a 4th, 5th, 6th option. Why? Because we enjoy causing you consternation

Incidentally, just because you have email with a browser-based GUI doesn't mean you can't use Outlook Express or Thunderbird with them. You'll just have to set up the POP3 or IMAP address.

I can look at other ISPs and getcha more prices

Google is free as long as you only want 10 emails or less. You have to have your own domain name though.
