Another day another W. Reed Johnson's beard is carrying this team on its back. Its truly amazing what happens when the pitching isn't a giant pile of shit.

They certainly play well when the pressure is off and the salary drive begins.

Hendry will shine it up real nice and put a ribbon on this little, useless streak of winning consecutive series. If Ricketts buys his shit, they better cancel the Cubs Convention. They will be there with pitchforks.

I have a feeling Ricketts has already bought it. He had no business buying this team.Cannot afford it and too dumb to run it. Too scared to make an actual decision and has idiots telling him what to do. Gonna get a lot worse before it ever gets better.

If they win today, they will have won 5 consecutive series'. Thats hard to even believe when you look at the first 3 months of the season. I know it doesn't matter-save for the possible negative ramifications of keeping the manager/GM combo in place, but it's still an accomplishment I would not have expected.

But look at the competition -- only Atlanta has a winning record. The other 4 teams are shit and out of contention.

They were the 2nd worst team in the NL and perhaps on their way to near 100 losses. Now they are within striking distance of the Pirates and perhaps even the Reds. It would be a tall midget award (not the one here) if they were to get 3rd place in the division, but an accomplishment of sorts. I like the idea of a team that doesn't just mail it in/quit. Further....I have to admit I was 100% wrong about the Cubs signing Carlos Pena. He has does a fairly good job since starting slowly and plays the hell out of 1st base. Plus, he has demonstrated the kind of attitude I like to see from a player. Guys like Pena and Marlin Byrd are the kind of players that can positively influence young players. I would still like to see the Cubs sign Fielder and upgrade the position. But given the situation last winter and looking back on the guys available to play 1st, the Pena signing was a pretty good one.

When a team plays as poorly as the Cubs did the 1st 3 months of the season and has the 2nd worst record in Baseball, to rebound and climb over a couple clubs to approach even mediocrity, would be a significant improvement.

I like Pena's attitude and hustle, but it may have been better to keep Derrek Lee. (Not that he was setting the world on fire either.)

I think what you meant to say was it would have been better to just set Derrek Lee on fire

Hey, if you enjoy seeing your team play poorly and then just continue to struggle...great. Me-I like my team to keep trying rather than quitting on themselves, the team and their fans. If they show improvement and are able to show reason to think there might be some players with whom to build with....okay. I prefer that scenario. One of the things I have grown to appreciate about Pena, is that he seems to really enjoy playing the game and has continued to give the kind of effort some players stop exhibiting once their team is no longer a contender. Trying to win each day matters for the fans that bought a ticket or just chose to tune into the game on TV or radio, being a professional and doing your job to the best of your ability matters.
