If Steve Stone (aka the crazy ex-wife) hates Money Ball I'm hoping the movie wins an Oscar.

Saw this last night. Pretty good movie. Not really about the A's or how great Beane is. Actually more about how he is a failure, but tried something new. Actually worth the money.

Saw last night as well, and thought it was pretty good. The portrayal of the old-time scouts was spot on.

I thought it was hilarious about how scouts care about the fact that someone "looks like a ballplayer" and "has a good face". Now I know why the Cubs suck.

Edit: And apparently if Billy Beane is the Cubs new GM his first business will be to not resign Carlos Pena.

I think what is interesting is that the 2002 Oakland A's had three future managers on their coaching staff...Ken Macha, Ron Washington and Mike Quade, who was the first base coach.

Going to see this tonight. I'm hoping it's at least decent.

I agree with Boers. I refuse to allow for the possibility that this is any good.

I enjoyed the movie but felt it petered out towards the end.

All with a small payroll. Thats pretty impressive.

Im not saying you had to write a book or make a movie about it, but you guys are taking it too far the other way.

He was definitely influential on baseball.

Is this the movie about the Florida Marlins who found a way to win two World Series in 20 years while being a small market team with a limited payroll?

Or is this the movie about the Arizona Diamondbacks who won a World Series in the first four years of existence and made another NLCS?

Now, I remember, this is about the Athletics who played in 3 World Series, right before the time that Billy Beane joined the team as an advanced scout, and then proceeded to accomplish the amazing task of winning 1 playoff series and then getting swept in the next round.

Hopefully someone writes a movie about my mundane and unimpressive life too.
One of my main gripes with modern MLB is the advantage the big spenders have over the small markets. I grew up with the Pirates, Royals, Reds, Orioles etc. making regular post-season appearances. The shift toward moneyed teams in the last couple of decades makes the sport less interesting IMO. Sure the occasional Rays or Brewers enter the picture, but then they inevitably have their team picked apart. For a time Beane (and his breathren) were able to overcome the big market advantage. As B&B note regularly, in baseball making the play-offs gives you as good of a chance as anyone - regardless of record. The fact that the A's didn't win a WS takes away the stories cache but like the more recent Twins teams they still have my respect.

This is the best movie I've seen so far this year...that's not saying much considering I haven't really liked much that I've seen this year.

But this movie delivers. It's aware that the A's didn't win a championship. Curiously, that's not what this is about since Beane is so intent on "winning the last game of the series".

Beane is a self-tortured guy well played by Brad Pitt (who will definitely get an Oscar nomination). The movie is about baseball winning over anything else...but that innovations can still work even if the tradition of getting the best players (no matter how much they cost) still trumps everything else. No, Beane hasn't won a World Series...he had a chance to GM the Red Sox, who wound up winning in '04; but he decided to stay in Oakland. It makes sense when you see the film why.

The thing I liked most about this movie was its patience with going through the motions. We actually get to know some of these players, and wind up rooting for them in some of their situations. It's about baseball, and it's also just about people. It's not about winning the big game and there's plenty left after the A's are eliminated by the Twins in the ALDS.

the supporting characters played by Jonah Hill as the numbers cruncher and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the disgruntled and quiet manager are strong. I like that there are NO Sorkin-moments in this film...proof that he didn't have final say over the script (unlike the insufferable "Social Network"). This film's a lot more quiet than the trailers suggest. This isn't a rip roaring stand up and cheer laugh out loud comedy.

Its best moments are the reflections Beane has back at his own sordid past as a player, and his scenes with Peter Brand (Hill), trying to shake things up when he doesn't see what's in front of him working.

The only weakness was the subplot of his ex-wife, who is almost non-existent. We're never really sure why things don't work out between the two of them and she winds up with a little dweeb instead. It could've been removed completely and it would've been fine. I guess Robin Wright-Penn would've been out a paycheck...but oh well.

The most solid film I've seen all year, hands down.

:D :D :D :) out of :D :D :D :D

I agree with W_Z for the most part. I did like the part where the new dweeb husband feigns interest in Beane's job and tries to talk baseball. His daughter was a real cute kid and likeable unlike a lot of "movie kids". Great supporting cast. Favorite part of the movie is when a young Carlos Pena gets pulled into the office. Also loved all the old scouts bitching and griping...great stuff!

pasta, that's a great scene. in fact it pays off with the "business as usual" notion that beane talks about, and peter brand handles it well.

i like the follow-up scene where beane lets giambi go. good pay off.

At least it's accurate to Lewis' slurping of Bean by having Brad Pitt play the role.

were you piling on about robert redford playing bloody bob woodward in "all the president's men"?

How good could it be if it gets beat at the box office by a 17 year old movie?

Keep it. Dopes.
