Last evening, my son and I viewed the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, led by Andreas Delfs, in their performance of Dvorak's Symphony No. 6.

It is my opinion that Dvorak is an extremely underappreciated composer. I would appreciate your feedback.

Chirp, chirp, chirp...

Most of my exposure to classical music comes via Tom & Jerry episodes. :oops:

I've never fully appreciated the line of Romanticism that continued out from Brahms, Dvorak included. It's odd that you heard the 6th; usually, the 7th and 8th are offered very occasionally, and then the 9th is unmercifully given once a season or so.

You could wait more than, you know, 9 minutes before determining that abolutely no one else has this interest.

Irish Boy, thank you for your thoughtful response. Who are your favorite composers? I am partial to the stirring power of Wagner and Tchaikovsky, though it is possible for me to take great delight in a simple polonaise by Chopin.

As to Mustang Rob, I recall that he has claimed to be a Red Sawks fan (Probably going all the way back to October, 2004), though not necessarily a Bostonian. Typically, any discussion about classical music with an average Bostonian begins and ends with Aerosmith.

God Stoneroses86,
How I wish that was the case. :cry:

If only I knew what I was signing up for when I chose Rice & Lynn as my baseball idols. Even typing the "86" at the end of your name makes me cringe. :x

BTW,
Kudos to you for bringing up Poland's greatest son (not JP II)

I've soured on Wagner over the past couple of years, although I still find him incredibly moving at times. Mahler is at the top of the list for me, followed by Haydn, Shostakovich, Beethoven, and Bruckner.

Everyone- take five: Favorite classical composers!

Ok, *now* you'll hear crickets chirping

I generally prefer jazz to classical music. Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Ornette Coleman are currently my holy trinity. I have been listening to Coleman a lot lately, as his conception of "free jazz" can be taken as an aesthetic realization of radical democracy.

Ahhh, Jim Rice and Freddy Lynn.

This trip down memory lane is in honor of my favorite midwestern Red Saaawks fan, Mustang Rob. All others may feel free to discontinue reading at this point.

In the summer of 1978, I was a 13 year old ruffian, already bitterly seasoned by growing up in the hardscrabble, leafy, tree lined streets of Trumbull, Connecticut. Not yet having an adult's sense of perspective on what is truly important in one's life, the Yankees were all I thought about from April to October. Needless to say, the summer of 1978 was a painful one, what with the hated Saawks holding a 14 game lead over my beloved Yankees on July 18th. My plight, of course, was worsened by the fact that, being a New Englander, many of my friends were Saawks fans. As you are probably well aware, a small taste of success generally tends to cause Saawks fans to, shall we say, forget their place. Normally insufferable, they become virtually unbearable when experiencing their rare moments of triumph.

Hosanna! As the summer wound to its end, it became very clear that something magical was afoot, and the noose began to tighten around the necks of Rice, Lynn, Yaz, Zimmer, et al. By September 7th, the glorious Yankees had cut the lead to 4 games, and embarked upon a 4 game set in the broken down and rat infested Fenway Park.

Perhaps, Mustang Rob, you are too young to remember the details of what will forever be known as "The Boston Massacre, Part II." If so, I will spare you from same. After the sweep, during which the Bombers outscored the Saawks by 42 runs to 9, the gurgling and choking sounds emanating from the Massachusetts Bay Colony could be heard as far south as the shores of Long Island Sound!

I believe you are probably aware of how this story ends: with the heroics of an unsung, light hitting shortstop by the name of Bucky Dent. I believe you and your ilk now refer to him as Bucky "F'in" Dent.

Enjoy the upcoming season.

My wife's mother, father and extended family live in Western Mass. and are very passionate and very annoying Red Sox and Patriots fans. Any story of either team's failure warms my heart. Thank you, stoneroses.

Boston is definitely my first choice if I'm ever given the "choose one American city to break of into the ocean" lever by God- if nothing else, for the accents alone!

I think my world pick would be Vladivostok, because really, it'd be kinda funny to wake up one day and Vladivostok isn't there anymore. I wonder what people's reaction would be? I think it'd be pretty subdued.

In light of the fact that the majority of American high school students probably can't even find all 50 states on a map, I would presume that their reaction upon hearing of Vladivostok's untimely demise would be an ignorant, vacant stare.

I like your sense of humor, Mr. Irish Boy. If you are ever given that "magic lever," would you please arrange for the corpulent Senator Kennedy to be present in Boston before pulling it?

I am sorry to hear that you have soured on Wagner. Would you not agree that Siegried's Funeral March is one of the most beautiful, moving pieces of music ever composed?

Is there a way of punching a hole around Crawford, Texas as well?

It's your magic God lever, TM. Make use of it as you will.

As for Siegfried's funeral march- I fullheartedly agree with your assessment as "incredibly moving". Wagner has hundreds and hundreds of moments and little pieces throughout his works that make me sit still, close my eyes, and listen, no matter where I am (this is tricky in the car.) Another example is Siegfried's Rhine Journey from the same opera, and Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral from Lohengrin.

The only problem with Wagner is that he takes so damn long to say anything. I remember the first time I went to see Das Rheingold, I wanted to scream from my seat in the audience at that damn dwarf Albrecht, "Just take the frickin' gold already! It's been like 30 minutes- take the Goddamn gold!" All the meanwhile, the music is itchy.

Doesn't everyone remember their first?
Yes that was the summer that an 8 year old Mustang's baseball Cherry was popped. I recall seing "the" box score and thinking, "that's OK. They'll just have to win next year". A naive child's chant I reapeated for the next 25 summers.
Since I didn't grow up in New England, I lack the mob mentality you've come to expect from the Red Sox nation, Roses. I hate the Yankees organization, but don't project that hate to their fans. As a matter of fact I flat out envy you.
I envy your 27 championships.
I envy your win at any cost ownership.
I envy the fact that you have Gary Copper in "The Pride of the Yankees" & we have Jimmy Fallon in "Fever Pitch".

How about a wager on the upcoming season?
If the Red Sox make the '07 WS, you will post here for a year with my team's logo as your avatar.

I heard Vladivostok is like what Oakland would look like if run by the Soviets.

I am in favor of a wager. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea how to install an avatar. The fact that I have quoted you represents a technological advancement I previously never dreamed possible. Therefore, it would be difficult for me to pay my debt.

To show my confidence in the rest of the American League, I give you the following options, all far more painful than displaying the Scarlet "B." "I, (my name), hereby pledge that if the Boston Red Sox are the American League Champions in 2007, I will:"

1.) Pledge to vote for a Democrat of your choosing;
2.) Purchase a rap album and/or attend a rap "concert;"
3.) Watch "The View" for 1 month straight and/or become a preferred member of Rosie O'Donnell's web site;
4.) (To be determined through negotiations).

What may I expect from you?

LOL !!!

1) I appreciate the extent of your sacrifice here, but as an idealist I couldn't ask you to sacrifice your beliefs to satisfy a wager.
2) Violates the 8th amendment
3) Only if you would also take your next vacation on the "Rosie family cruise" :wink:

I'm partial to Coach's suggestion of a bottle of fine liquor, or the winner gets his team's '07 WS cap that I'm sure will be available throught MLBShop.

When the inevitable happens and neither the Red Sox nor the Yankees sniff the '07 World Series, will both Mustang Rob and stoneroses be required to perform pennance in the form of a threesome with the "beauty" of spmack's choosing?

TM,

Even a cynic like you has to admit that a wager on this seasons WS between a Red Sox and a Yankee fan bears more validity than the laughable bickering elsewhere on this board.

Don't get me wrong. I'm enjoying the conversation. My comment was merely an attempt to make sure your wager with stoneroses accounted for all possible outcomes of the baseball season, especially the most likely one. Plus I just think Red Sox and Yankees fans inherently deserve to be punished, and subjecting you two to the aesthetic "standards" of an spmack seems the best way of doing so.

The words from SP Mack that strike the most fear in his friends' hearts:

"Hey buddy, I have this girl I want to set you up with."

_________________________

As for my displaced Red Sox friend, I hereby pledge a bottle of your favorite liquor.

As I do not partake in the consumption of alcoholic beverages, I will accept a case of Diet Coke, preferably Black Cherry Vanilla.

Lest I be accused of unfair dealing, I should advise you that I received a letter from Mr. Steinbrenner, dated February 1, 2007. In this letter, strangely addressed to "Dear Fans," he states that he "...couldn't be more excited for the season to start." He later states: "Thank you for supporting us as we give everthing we have toward winning a 27th World Championship."

I will allow you to ponder this and, if you wish, withdraw from our wager with your honor intact.

You gotta loosen it up in the summer, stoneroses. Nothing complements Tennyson and Wagner so well as a bottle of tequila.

Not even Tennyson could adequately express my horror at this moment.

Incidentally, I have children, not "youtes." I grew up in Connecticut, not Bensonhurst.

As for "DiMagio," the Clipper hit in 56 straight games, married Marilyn Monroe, and was Mr. Coffee to a generation. Spell his name correctly!

Stoneroses,
Since my favorite liquor would be Patron Reposado($50), at least allow me to make the terms of the wager more equitable by throwing in a gift cert to your local Blain's Farm & Fleet.

I must confess that my initial reaction to this offer was to bemoan the fact that I probably have no use for livestock feed or corn seed. Having gone on the Farm and Fleet website, however, I see that I could potentially make use of such a prize.

Therefore, we have a wager, Sir. The mutual conditions are as follows:

1.) Should the Boston Red Sox be crowned the Champions of the American League in the 2007 Major League Season, I will arrange for delivery to you of a bottle of Patron Reposado;
2.) Should the New York Yankees earn their 40th American League Championship in the 2007 Major League Season, you will arrange for delivery to me of a similarly valued gift certificate to Farm and Fleet;
3.) Both of us agree that the other registered users of this board are to be considered "witnesses" to this wager, for purposes of enforcement;
4.) Both of us agree that injury or injuries to any player(s), no matter how valuable they may be, shall not be deemed sufficient grounds for nullification of this wager;
5.) Both of us agree that the wager shall be nullified and held to be void should any team other than the Red Sox or Yankees be crowned champions of the American League following this 2007 season.

Let the hunt begin.
