For everybody saying that Bartman is partly to blame, please explain to the class how he had any affect on the Cubs blowing the lead in Game 7? I know the standard "there shouldn't have been a game 7" will be said, but there was a Game 7, and the Cubs had one of their best pitchers on the mound. And they had the lead, at home. And lost. That has nothing to do with Bartman.

You can talk about that Bartman play, the botched double play, the wild pitch, what Dusty did or didn't do, etc etc etc all day long, but the fact is that none-- NONE-- of that has anything to do with the Cubs pissing away the lead in Game 7.

I hear that a lot too. But I'm just saying even if Game 7 felt like a funeral, the Cubs still had the lead.

I didn't watch this documentary or read the entire thread, I was just kinda skimming thru it and saw some of the posts about Bartman. I'd like to catch this show at some point though.

It all happened, Frank. And the Cubs blew many chances.

But, the first thing to happen was the Bartman play. That play, I feel, caused the Cubs players to lose their shit and it all fell apart. It's true that the entire place was waiting for something to happen. I was waiting at home. That's why we were all counting every out.

I remember thinking when they got that first out in the 8th and there were only 5 outs left, that they were really going to do this.

So, sure, they had many chances after that. But, their best chance was to get the last 5 (or 4) outs with a 3 run lead in Game 6 and nobody on and Prior rolling along. To act like the play didn't matter is ridiculous.

It's not Bartman's fault that the Cubs fell apart. That was the culmination of Earth-sized expectations that weigh on every Cubs team that gets that close and all keep an eye out for "what is going to go wrong". That play was the trigger. It's that same level of pressure that destoyed the 2 subsequent playoff teams that shrunk to the moment. That's "the curse". These teams couldn't deal with the pressure.

I couldn't imagine watching that as a Cubs fan. I'm a Sox fan, so I enjoyed reliving the Cubs and their fandumb's misery.

Gotta agree with the good Doctor - this one guy in particular came off as the biggest douche nozzle.

Loved Blago shooting his mouth off too. What an ass crack.

And the ESPN.com columnist stalking Bartman in a parking garage was troubling. If he was packing heat - odds were that columnist would be dead.

I found the thing troubling as I watched it. I didn't understand the looping story of the Bosox into the mix, but seeing as the film maker was a Bosox fan, it kind of makes sense. And while Bartman wouldn't talk, at least Billy Buck did. Really felt for the guy when he mentioned his dad committed suicide when he was a kid, and baseball was his escape. LOVED the fact he was wearing a Cubs batting glove when he made the error - you gotta admit - it was priceless.

But at the end.... much like that night - Bartman wasn't to blame for the Cubs losing that game, or that series. And had they won the series, who's to say they would have even won the World Series? (Kinda like that Hue Hollins call on Pippen - that wasn't even a conference championship game - so the Bulls weren't ripped off of a 'championship' IMHO)

I cant explain it real well, its just what it was. Having the robotic seemingly curse proof and unshakeable Prior on the mound didnt help.

He was a big part of the confidence.

Prior was a huge part of it. He was the poster child of the new Cubs - young, could care less about the past, destined to be great for years to come. He was 12-1 in his 13 previous starts dating back to July.

He was the future and it was certain that he would win. I actually thought it was kind of cool that they lost Game 5 so the Cubs could clinch at Wrigley. The loss didn't concern me at all. It seemed appropriate to celebrate the NLCS clincher in Chicago.

Ya it was hard to watch, but a few things about that game.

Gonzo made the error, but if I remember correctly, it would have been very hard for him to turn a double play. Wasn't Juan Pierre on first? Even getting 1 out may have been hard the way the ball was hit and the way the SS body was positioned to throw out the guy at first.

I also remember Game 7. It was going fine and I think around the 5th inning, the whole place just went dead. I don't know why, but they were leading and then the whole place went dead, and Wood lost it and eventually lost the game.

Feel bad for Prior, how his career went to crap after that moment. I've been a Cubs fan all my life and have seen so many players but I have to say watching Prior pitch THAT YEAR was the most joy I had as a Cubs Fan in terms of admiring a cubs player. he just had a magical quality about him that year, of course until that Game 6.

ehhhh...............I think I'll never see them get to the WS ever.

I remember that game 5, i had a bad feeling, like the feeling in 1984 after game 5. I still thought they'd do it in Game 6.

It wasnt Pierre on first but even getting one out would have been huge.

Yeah they went crazy when Wood hit the homer to tie it in the third...it wasnt as much excitement as it was the release of all that emotion...they hadnt had anything to cheer about and they let it all out on the Wood HR.

Then Alou hits one in the 5th to take the lead....but there was no comfort.

Wood gave it up the next inning...and that was it.

2-0 thus far in the playoffs

I was at Game 2. He had an 11-0 lead after 5 and still left him in for 2 more innings. That should get more play in this whole "what happened" scenario. I was ticked off when I kept seeing him run out there. 116 pitches in October with an 11-run lead. Stupid.

which is exactly why, grid, that the doc started with buckner and the bosox. in baseball, the red sox and cubs have the biggest scapegoat stories in its history.

I thought it was interesting how they showed an earlier play where Bartman was waving for camera attention when there was a nearby foul ball in the stands. One of those "be careful for what you wish for" things.

Some of the "fans" really were disgusting -- especially the guy in the tunnel who ripped the sweater from Bartman as he tried to cover his face. When asked why he did it, tha fan said something like, "I wanted to expose him for ruining a once in a lifetime experience." Douche.

That's bullshit. If I remember correctly they came out in game 5 and got shut out 4-0 or something like that and completely dominated. As soon as that happened I told anyone who would listen that the series was 100% over and the Marlins were headed to the WS. You could tell from the way they came out with no life in that game 5 that they were done. Games 6 and 7 were just a formality.

My buddy laughed at me and said "there's no way they can lose 6 and 7, not with Woody and Prior going! They hadn't lost a back to back game all year when they were pitching." To this day my buddy will still every once in a while shout out "woody and Prior" and then start laughing.

Cubs are a bunch of bums, their fans are fucking losers who deserve all the suffering they are put through. They will NEVER win a WS and anyone who believes differently should die in a fire.

After losing game 5 I was pissed Prior wouldn't be able to pitch game 1 of the WS because he'd have to pitch game 6. I was still pretty confident but after losing game six though I fell into the "they're doomed" camp.
