Don't blame me for the fact that you rooted for the Amy Winehouse of the NFL for your childhood.

I was a little surprised by the nitrous oxide but can understand why he'd like it.

That's really sad. Don't know if I'd want to read this or not.

I will never understand why athletes and celebrities get married.

This explains how he destroyed his liver. If you're popping pain killer pills for 20+ years that will do it.

Many times, the companies they work for (Nike etc) insist upon it.

Bye bye 50 million dollar endorsement deal.

Go sell Reebok, Nike is a family company.

They urged MJ to marry cause Juan was knocked up

They would lose endorsements. Those Roos weren't selling themselves

Maybe. I find it hard to believe Nike would've dropped Tiger several years ago for being single or not having kids.

No but they could certainly provide incentives for being a family man etc.

Im not saying its forced but its at least one partial reason for the marriages....Im with Spaulding, celebs and athletes should never marry before age 50

I think the drug abuse allegations are BS. Darvon is not the first choice for someone wanting to abuse RX meds. The man played with pain and he dealt with it, like most people do, and I can't fathom a dentist ever giving out a script for morphine for a toothache. They usually give you 800mg ibuprofen, or Vicoprofen for the swelling. This writer is trying to tarnish the rep of a dead man to make a buck, and I think he is a scumbag for doing it.
The relationship issues are nothing new, and so what? But trying to portray him as some kind of a junkie is BS.
Taking too much Tylenol will destroy your liver no doubt, and perhaps contributed to his disease.

Companies need to rethink this policy. What's worse, a single athlete or a married one that bangs 150 whores like Tiger? Look at the hit Tiger's sponsors took for that.

Jeter is held in high regard and gets endormenets and he's never been married. All of his many girlfriends were known as well.

In this day and age all athletes affairs are gonna be exposed. So Nike making them get married will backfire. And you know they'll all cheat. Consumers know athletes are scum and don't care. And they don't buy the phony image anyway. In fact, the phony image is what people hate. Being single with girlfriends isn't considered evil by people. Once again, Jeter proves that. Also, if these guys cheat on their girlfriends it's not big news or seen as a negative thing. It's only harmful to your image if you cheat on the wife. Especially if you have kids.

So no wives and kids should be the incentive clauses from sponsors for these athletes. This isn't the 1950s for the love of God. Nobody cares if somone has a wife and kids for you to buy shoes from them.

Wonder how well known this was? There was an extended period of time where Payton was trying to buy teams, but things fell thru. Perhaps this stuff came up in the due dilligence.

I'm sure it was known in NFL circles. His teammates knew. Christ, the book says that the Bears got him his pills.

Payton wasn't super rich. In 1985 I saw that he only made 750k that year. He retired in '87 making a little over a million for that season. NFL money didn't get HUGE until the 90s. Players didn't have outright free agency until 1993. He never really had the money to buy an NFL team. He would have needed several partners with money and he'd just serve as the front man. Plus with his drug habbit, women, cars and partying I don't think he saved much. Yeah, he had some endorsements, videos and book deals, but that money wasn't huge in the 80s either. I would imagine popping pills for 20 years is rather expensive. Same with the nitrous oxide tanks.

I don't think Brittney and Jarred are living large these days. Walter didn't have much to leave them.

He was also involved with a couple of night clubs/restaurants & racing. I don't know how much of it was his money though.
