Will Ferrell. He carried the show his whole time there. It was one of the best eras of SNL with one of the less talented rosters outside of him.

I would definitely make him top 5.

The important thing to note: The early years casts, while good, are tremendously overrated.

I always thought Dan Aykroyd was solid in the early years. The Bass-o-Matic was classic.

I would say Hartman is in the top 3. Ferrell, Carvey, and Farley should be up there as well.

Are we playing the childhood game "Which one of these is not like the other?".

Phil's the undisputed champion to be sure, with Eddie Murphy not too far behind .... but putting aside the longevity issue, Billy Crystal was pretty great in whatever he did, and Marty Short wasn't any slouch either.

Everyone else is far behind these two to the point that the discussion is irrelevant. You would have to be an ignorant slut to rate it any other way. Will Farrell over either of these...you have to be fucking kidding me.

Dont bring that The first cast was the best bullshit in here

The best cast was the Carvey-Hartman-Farley-Myers early 90's group.

Phil Hartman and it's not even close. Great versatility, whereas someone like Will Ferrell never rose--and has heretofore never risen--beyond Will Ferrell Playing Someone.

Definitely. Don't forget Kevin Nealon and Dennis Miller in there, though I suppose with Weekend Update anchors generally being specialized cast members (the SNL equivalent of the closing pitcher?), it's hard to assess them with everyone else. Norm's in the all-time discussion on Weekend Update work alone, though. Norm owned.

Are you saying that Ferrell can't do impressions, or that he only plays himself in his characters?

I disagree with both of those.

The best of the best in "Saturday Night Live's" history in my opinion...The late, great Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Eddie Murphy (when he was really, really funny)and Joe Piscopo.

I'd take the Ferrell-Hammond-Gasteyer group as a whole. Belushi is important because he put the franchise on the map. He's like Friendster to Hatrman's Facebook.

wha? Eddie Murphy isn't a first cast member. I'd say Murphy-Piscopo etc. was the best cast.

I like Carvey-Hartman etc and you leave out some great women in Jan Hooks and the one who played Alfalfa.

I'm still trying to figure out how anyone can make the argument that Murphy and Belushi didn't have the greatest impact both on and off SNL.

Eddie Murphy sold out 20,000 seat stadiums with his stand up.

Belushi allowed his brother to have a hit TV show 20 years after his death.
