Four of the funniest from "In Living Color". Too bad Keenen had issues behind the scenes with FOX and 20th Century FOX Television in the second season. It could've been on longer than three seasons in the early '90s.

i wouldn't say it isn't close but that was the first name that came to me when i saw the title of this thread. the more you read about SNL, the more he makes a case. the guy was known as "the glue".

belushi was probably the most iconic but he was part of very sharp character actors and writers. i'd say if you said either one of these were #1 and #2 i couldn't disagree, no matter which way you had them.

rounding out the top five, eddie murphy, bill murray, and dana carvey. will ferrell is somewhere in the top 10.

as far as writers, michael o'donoghue, tina fey, al franken, and robert smigel.

I'm still trying to figure out how anyone can make the argument that Murphy and Belushi didn't have the greatest impact both on and off SNL.

Eddie Murphy sold out 20,000 seat stadiums with his stand up.

Belushi allowed his brother to have a hit TV show 20 years after his death.

Bill Murray is a bigger star than both of them.

I was too young to really watch that original cast, but I got into SNL around Eddie Murphy's time.

Murphy was so huge during those years, but I got to agree with most of you that the early 90s cast of Hartman / Carvey / Farley / Miller / Sandler was the best. Hell look at those names!

Farrell was ok, but the show has stunk since the late 90s.

It was OK...

It hasn't been as funny...That's for sure. Tina Fey did revive interest in the show during the 2008 "Race for the White House" with her dead-on imitation of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

I honestly think Sheri Oteri was the funniest female on the show. Her role as the crazy babysitter on Larry David's "Curb" was hysterical.

Toss up between Eddie Murphy, Phil Hartman and Chris Farley. Mr. Robinson's neighborhood, Buckwheat, Caveman Lawyer and Matt Foley were brilliantly executed comedy bits.

One is dead.

Eddie Murphy still makes a lot of money. That Donkey character alone has probably made him more than Murray has made in the last 10 years.

Murray is kind of a recluse and Murphy insists on trying to sing and pick up trannies with big feet.

If you were gay like me you'd be after Farley.

Was Steve Martin ever a cast member?

Steve Martin has guest hosted "SNL" quite a few times over the years. I know that Bill Murray replaced Chevy Chase in 1977.

You must be forgetting Julia Louis Dreyfuss. She was in her early 20s during SNL and I always found her smoking hot.
