This Payton book is a pretty polarizing subject - I do recall Danny Mac back in the day saying Walter was moody and at times had a dark side. ....and everybody probably assumed it was Mac being Mac.
It all comes full circle now.
At the end of the day, what we now know about brain injuries in football players, none of these 'revelations' (depression, dark times) are really revelations. Payton also never was run to run out of bounds, he'd want to inflict that last stiff arm, or put his head down to gain those extra yards.
...and we'd all heard the rumors that Walter had somebody on the side. It sounds like he was separated for quite awhile from his wife.
I also agree that this was a book that didn't really need to be written. RIP Walter.
