He did a decent job coming to Anaheim's rescue, and that team wasn't very good.

It's just a training camp invite, unless something's changed. If he distinguishes himself, cool, #1 ice time in the AHL for Salak, who is still waiver-exempt. If not, he's gone at the end of September and nothing of value was lost.

I can't think of a worse influence for Patrick 'caine, though.

Yeah the whole hip thing falling out of the socket thing might screw things up mid season if he gets the backup roll or if Crawford has a sophomore slump which I am predicting  (now he'll win the Vezina...)

Well, if he wins the backup role and his hip falls out, then call Salak up. It's not even a given that Emery is the backup in the first place. If he can't win the job in camp, he's gone.

I think the Ducks were actually a pretty good team. They use their size extremely well. They have given the Hawks trouble, even the SC winning team. Hopefully that changes this year.

The Ducks have one of the best lines in the league, and crap. As currently constructed, with a Perry-Getzlaf-Ryan scoring/checking line and precious little else, they can at best give you a first round win before a deeper team eats them for lunch. They're the Marleau-Thornton-Heatley Sharks with even less behind them.

51 hours left to determine Emery's fate.

Hawks trim training-camp roster to 27
The Chicago Blackhawks reduced their training-camp roster to 27 on Moonday by assigning five players to Rockford of the American Hockey League.

Forwards Jimmy Hayes, Marcus Kruger, Peter LeBlanc and Brandon Pirri and defenseman Dylan Olsen are headed to Rockford. That leaves 16 forwards, eight defensemen, and three goaltenders on the Hawks' roster.

The Hawks must make at least four more cuts to get down to 23 by 2 p.m. Wednesday, in advance of the regular-season opener Friday at Dallas.

Forward Viktor Stalberg likely is headed to injured reserve with his knee injury. Forwards Jeremy Morin and Philippe Paradis are candidates to be sent to Rockford, and then the Hawks must decide on their backup goalie.

If they keep Ray Emery, they could send Alexander Salak to Rockford. If they choose Salak, Emery would become a free agent.

If they feel Crawford is going to be in net for in excess of 60 games or so, then send Salak down. Yes Emery sucks, but I'd rather have Salak playing every game in Rockford than sitting on the bench.

I agree with this and apparently the Hawks do too - reports are that they are working on a deal for Emery to be the backup.

I just heard on B&B that he made the team.

Along with Jamal Mayers, you can sign me up again for Blackhawks Hockey!

That whole hip/socket thing just does not sound like fun. Hope we don't see that for a while.

I did like Ray Emery, when he backstopped the Sens to a Stanley Cup Final. The Ray Emery with like an .815 sv% in this preseason and a 15/18 game, I don't think I like so much. When your enfeebled preseason defense only gives you 18 shots to stop, you better get 'em all, or maybe miss one. 15/18 is a bad game.

I'm not surprised that Quenneville pushed for Emery to be the backup, but he didn't earn it with his preseason.

If Crawford gets hurt, Salak is the starter. So why even pay Emery to sit on the bench. No one else is going to sign him with that pathetic preseason.

Because you want Salak to get as many reps as possible if he has to jump into the starting role. He doesn't get those if he's sitting on the bench in Chicago. He get's them if he's stuck in Rockford.

It's logical.

to put it another way, your organizations' 6th best starting pitcher...1st guy up if someone gets hurt in the rotation. Do you stick him in the bullpen, or as the 1st starter in AAA?

Emery has a degenerative hip. It's not like he's going to get a hell of a lot better. Edmonton and Long Island each have like five backup goalies; any one of them would surely be an improvement over Emery.

Because it's 600K and he'll be lucky to get into 15 games this year. Why have Salak on the bench and not building any experience when you can have him start 60-70 games in Rockford?

Because when Emery is the worst backup in the league and costs you 8-10 points early in the season all of a sudden you are battling just to make the playoffs.

How many times did we see Turco as the backup when the Turco starting experience failed? Crawford seemed to play 5 of every 6 or more.

You can make a decent argument that Corey Crawford finally turned the corner when he spent the whole season in Chicago under Stephane Waite. To this point, Salak has logged about 100 games in the Finnish league, about 40 in the AHL, and another 30 in the Elitserien, which is said to be at or just above the AHL in level of play, so while he didn't toil as long as Crawford did, he's not exactly green, either. Starting 60 games in Rockford won't stunt his development by any means, but maybe he's already ready for those graduate-level practices he'll need to become an NHL goalie. At some point you have to jump into the fire, right?

Again, I really wanted Emery to earn that backup role, but he has a necrotic hip and can't stop shots. Quenneville said he wanted about a 56-26 split between Crawford and the backup. I do not think that is a realistic figure. Try 70-12.

They can't recall Salak without a corresponding roster move. Crawford to the IR? Emery waived? Saad returned?

EDIT: Salak is listed on the main site's active roster, but so are 23 other people, so someone has to go. It should probably be John Scott.

EDIT2: Nope, Saad is gone for the rest of the year. Fuckin' dumb.

i love the idea of Saad. how sweet would it be to pick up an 18 year old phenom in the draft this year? however, the fact is, he just isnt ready. the preseason is so different that the regular season and from my perspective, it looked like Saad was schooling fellow young players, which is good news for the future, he's starting off with a headstart in that race. however, i was at the game on saturday and watched him and he was sloppy out there. mind you, not TERRIBLE, which says a lot about how good of a future he probably has, but still, not very fluid - bad passes, a little disoriented out there. he needs work and there really is no room for him on this team with Stalberg and Smith coming back.

I get the OHL rule about returning junior players promptly and not jerking around their operations. Remember, these are independent teams with independent agendas; it's not like Rockford where there is only a team in Rockford to develop or park the Blackhawks' talent close to home. That doesn't mean I like it. I hate the all-or-nothing way it's gotta be. I would almost rather carry Saad as a scratch all year just to have him in NHL practices and dress him for games when possible.

John Scott offers nothing to this team now that Mayers and Carcillo can enforce between the whistles and not have players run away because He Big Tall! Scott is a sideshow best suited for the minor leagues.

Well, now apparently we have him for another season - or does the extension not mean much?
