I won't listen to either, but for different reasons. I won't listen to Mulligan and Hanley because they're (astoundingly) bad. I won't listen to North because he's not even trainwreck entertaining. He's just offensively, insultingly, stupid.

I think some of the guests they get are hand fed to them by Mitch....Ken Rosenthal, Troy Aikman etc...those contracts are not being brought in by their producers. Mitch gives theem the high profile guests to attract listeners and share in their favor.

Brad Biggs is on everyday...that's too much and if they had it their way he would be on twice a show.

I doubt it. There's no way that Biggs could tear himself away from the buffet line two times every morning.

I'm almost shocked at the amount of responses indicating they would take North back. I guess maybe that is more of an indictment on the M&H than support of North....at least I hope so. For me, I take M&H over North any day of the week. The North show was SOOOO fucking bad. He tried too hard to be funny, edgy, and entertaining....and HE WAS NOT!!! He was & is a FUCKIN MORON!!! Do you not remember jag bag? Bookie priest? HGH player of the day?...just to name a few FUCKING BOMB segments he ran out at the listeners. It was beyond painful and I want nothing to do with him on the airwaves again. EVER!!! As for M&H...I understand the criticisms of each & the show...but for me, it in no way comes close to the train wreck that is North!! If I have to choose between the two...M&H hands down without question.

North sucks!

I don't understand the need for the daily Bears hit from Biggs or anybody else. Too often, there just isn't anything new for the "expert" to chime in with. This goes for B&B with Zaidman as well.

IMO, the Bears "expert" should be used on an as-needed basis.

Biggs is just so bad. He's worse than Pompei, worse than any of them

This morning M&H played some sound bite of a press conference where Tillman asked Biggs if he had any questions for him , apparently his back was turned or something. M&H of course were laughing hysterically about it (not really funny) then they opened by trying to needle Biggs about it and he didn't really say anything leading to a very awkward moment

Now that I think of it, Biggs is pretty much their guy. He doesn't join any of the other hosts on the station. Part of it may be the newspaper connection, but the other part may be the fact that he sucks and the other hosts know it.

I don't think he sucks...he is just on too much therefore he does not have enough new/thoughtful content.

1. He is not coming back
2. He is not coming back
3. He burned his bridges
4. I would not mind him back at all, he just can't have his own show. He can't have any bonuses tied to ratings, etc. He has zero control over what is going on. Just make dumb, ignorant, racist and stereotypical comments. LIGHT EM UP!

Expound #4

North thought he was running his own mini station. Never heard a guy talk more about revenue and ratings than him. His thoughts were never how can I make this show better, they were what can I do to get sponsored, then he would try and sell the sponsorship. It wasn't his job, but he made it his job and thought he should be paid accordingly.

Talking to one of the sales guys at an outing he was telling me how much he hated North. He would call on clients and they would say "Oh, Mike North called us". lol Sometimes Bebe made a call as a follow up after North would promise not to call them.

Mike North hustled for every buck he made in life. Why should it change when he got the SCORE job? All I can say is,I had my radio tuned to the SCORE every morning when he was on. Now,I treat it like elevator music. I'll listen because I'm in the car for a few minutes, that's about it.

Because someone just paid you $1.5M to focus on a job, which was create a good radio, not hustle the lil guys for a free TV for the 1,2,3 Pickem game.

He didnt do his job!

But don't forget that for about 10 years, North WAS the station manager, program director, recruiter, and sales & Marketing manager.
He called the shots. The guys that actually owned & ran the station wouldn't do anything without running it by North to get his buy in.

I don't hate M&H. I think the show is vanilla. More suited for WGN. Now if you want to talk horrible, try listening to the biggest "fluffer" in sportstalk,Glen Koslowski.

No. Not to the Score, not to mornings, hell... not even to radio. But that's me. I have far less problems with Mully/Hanley than you do. If someone can figure a way to turn Mully's mic down -- face it, he has a boisterous conversational voice -- it'd improve the show some. It would mean that the pacing wouldn't just be set by Mully, with Hanley straining his soft voice to get a word in edgewise. I think that'd cover the majority of people's complaints here.

Like all pills, I'm a giver, not a taker :-)

I heard this exchange, too. The awkwardness lasted about two seconds and really wasn't a big deal.

In my opinion, Biggs is a solid beat reporter who possesses good information. Mully and Hanley sometimes prevent Biggs from conveying that information because they frequently ask odd questions or inexplicably use Biggs' segment to propound their own pet theories of questionable relevance.

Anyway, I agree with other posters who feel Biggs is overexposed. There's no need to have him on so frequently, especially if Mully and Hanley could be convinced to exhibit more radio discipline and lead the segment in a more focused and professional manner.

I really don't see Hanley's approach to humor as being fundamentally different from Holmes' mode of storytelling. For Hanley, every comment by Mully poses an opportunity to insert an odd reference or "risque" innuendo. For Holmes, every Chicago sports-related anecdote he conveys presents an opportunity to inform his audience about some aspect of his professional or personal life. Both contributions can be easily dismissed as irrelevant. In Hanley's case, however, he is simply attempting to be entertaining whereas Holmes is attempting to assert his self-importance.

I also agree with denisdman. For the last 5 years of his Score run, North's on-air personality had descended into a seemingly endless loop of uninformed, reactionary sports opinion that was guided by a larger view of the world shaped by a third grade-level comprehension of Fox News talking points. When I have the need to drink from the cup of the protofascist sports zeitgeist, I can read any number of posters here rather than turning to the disingenuous equivalent of a carnival barker whose atavistic bombast was allowed to sully the public airwaves only because its crude and incoherent manifestation was so easy to dismiss.

Hey, good observation.

So yeah, this show isn't very good, but how good does morning drive sports radio have to be? Consider that most people who listen to radio in the morning are either there for full-service WBBM/WGN/WBEZ/WWWN(hahahahahahahaha suuuure) news talk, or Wacky Morning Zoo crap. For the crusty degenerates who care enough to habitually listen to sports talk in the morning, they get some relatively straightforward grizzled-reporter-type stuff. I think they know what they're doing by punting in the mornings and playing it safe as they do.

Of course, I'm the same person who thinks Boers & Bernstein make more sense under the radar in middays and Mac should be doing his more populist fare in afternoon drive, and yet B&B are a ratings beast despite (and surely not because of) esoteric humor, NBA overindulgence, and disrespect for the audience. I say this as someone who loves two out of those three, mind you.

I don't have a problem with this show. It gets me to work just fine, they have interviews with all the relevant people and beat writers. They are pretty good with all topics, especially Hanley. The zingers and the jokes are bad, but i think that's a pretty minor complaint.

Compared to North, they are a million times better. North was a racist bigot who didn't know anything about any sport.

First, welcome to the board. That being said:

charitystripe wrote:

Yes, but those interviews are usually poorly-conducted. They don't ask poignant questions very often, and more than likely Hanley will feel the need to butt in when the guest is talking, in addition to Mike Mulligan letting out a loud laugh when no joke has been told. They're very bad interviewers.

charitystripe wrote:

No, they actually aren't. They repeat other peoples' talking points and state the obvious on all sports. When they're not doing that, they're asking what callers think in lieu of actually formulating their own opinions. They talk in circles and generally never have an actual premise to any conversation they start or take part in.

charitystripe wrote:

I'm not sure how minor the complaint is when they spend most of the show trying to add humor where there isn't any. I could see if their bad jokes and barbs were only sporadic, but they do it frequently enough that it kills the flow of an already bad show. That's tough to do without effort. It's like they try to outdo each other when it comes to making the worst joke at the worst time.

charitystripe wrote:

I don't disagree about the North comments, as his bigotry is the reason I stopped listening to his show shortly after 9/11. However, I disagree that M&H are a "million times better" than North. I think their show is just as horrible, but in a completely different way.

I thought the 40min or so I heard today was pretty good (for them) actually. They weren't too meatballish, were just pretty level headed about what to expect from the Bears the rest of the year. Then they had Biggs on and despite the wheezing, he was pretty accurate in what he said as well.

Welcome to the board and I agree with most of what you wrote. North did know his sports a little bit...but he fancied himself as a Don't Fade Me guru whcih he certainly was not, and he always thought he knew talent when he didn't (Luol Deng top 5, and Michael Beasley was supposed to be better than Derrick Rose).

North sucks!!! The white sox should hire him!!
