Ok, so we have a new GM. What are realistic goals for this guy?
First realistic goal should be a division championship within 3 years.
Next, a visit to the NLCS within 5.
A win in the NLCS by year 6.

This team needs to be built from scratch. You have very few actual buildable pieces here over the next two years.

1st order of business... you don't resign Ramirez, you fire Quade, you release and pay Soriano. I don't see Fielder nor Pujols as part of a rebuilding. Oh, you also have to admit you're rebuilding. I don't know that Ricketts can do that but I don't think that Theo has a problem with it.

Sign at least 1 SP. Sign Fielder (They need a power hitter in the lineup and a 1b... its gotta be him). Get rid of Z and Sori. Hire a new manager. That is a solid first season.

World Series winning teams do not have bums at first base.

It will be eaten. The team is better without him on it.

Or 'Cubs' logos on their uniforms.

 ...sad but true...soriano is owed too much money, i do not see the team eating that much cash, i agree he needs to go and the team would be better off...but that is just not going to happen

Per Peter Gammons, Boston may get Brett Jackson as compensation. I hope that is bullshit. He doesn't have any sources, just talking out his ass I guess.

It's late enough in the day to assume Gammons is thoroughly drunk.

Most reports from non-stroke victims is that the Cubs will pay monetary compensation to the Red Sox.

Division championships are just fine with me. The playoffs are a crapshoot, win enough divisions and you'll win a WS eventually.

I thought I remembered Gammons saying a while back that Epstein would not be coming to the Cubs. Anyone else remember that? I know he's missed quite a few stories lately.

He likes the Sawx not the Sox so it would never work. He talks about the Cubs too much as well.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, it hasn't been decided whether the Cubs will send cash or a minor leaguer to the Red Sox as compensation.

Hmmm. Not sure what to think bout this. Does it mean the Cubs don't have any minor leaguers who interest the Red Sox or the Red Sox are in a money crunch and need an influx of cash? I'd have to think the Cubs would rather give up the minor leaguers than give up the cash because they are in a bit of a money crunch themselves.

So was Epstein supposed to go sit in the clubhouse on a daily basis to police the team? And no shit, the Red Sox they spent like they were Yankees. Were they supposed to take some philosophical stand and refuse to sign players to big deals and then watch the Yanks pass them?

I'll take Theo's track record of developed players. Looks good to me.

I think the fact that he's left handed is the only thing that makes this a decent signing.

But I agree wtih what Berns has been saying. Power hitting 1B are a dime a dozen.

Fielder had 10 more homeruns than Pena. And Pena is obviously way better defensively.

How much are those 10 homeruns worth?

75% of the league has a 1b with an .850 or higher OPS

Didn't Prince hit over .300 as well though? Pena was an out or a walk almost every time he didn't hit a hr.

Right, obviously Prince is a lot better, but even a guy like Pena who had a terrible start doesnt end up that far away from Prince's numbers at the end of the year.

You can ALWAYS find a power hitting first baseman in an offseason and usually within your own organization (Because most guys who hit there way through the minors without a postion end up there.)

16 first baseman hit at least 25 homers last year.

On the other hand, he's a left handed force who is young enough to still be a premium player 3 years from now when the Cubs will be ready to compete.
