Jay-Z is pretty awful, really.

Never understood the love for Jay-Z. All of a sudden, everyone seems to be talking like he's some sort of rap god. I don't get it.

I actually like Jay Z, but I do not think he is as good as he thinks he is.

It's just because there's nobody else that deserves it more, I guess, so he's the best of a weak lot. Think John Cena in the WWF. He's the new Hogan/Austin/Rock. Why? I don't know. He's not as good as them. They just say he is, so now he is.

Yeah, I suppose. But then, I don't even think he's that. I think there may be a seniority effect here.

Well I think Jay Z is pretty nice. His style is unlike any other, although he does bite a few lines from other rappers. His latest album is a love/hate CD, either you love it or hate, no middle ground. His best work will always be his earlier stuff like Reasonable Doubt, Vol 1, and Vol 2. The Blueprint is probably his best overall because it was a perfect mix of commercialism yet he kept it very lyrical and had meaning. I would argue that the blueprint was set up as a movie. As far a lyricist, Nas and Common are better. But Jay Z has the whole package.

alright...
i've waited long enough to ask this question directly, though I've alluded to it..

guys,
please...
i need you to narrow down a list of 10 hip/hop albums that I must own.
I want you to run the gamut.
a CSFMB consensus top ten hip/hop albums, if you will....

If anything gets posted that I already have, I will let you know and I would hope that you guys would be up for modifying or expanding the list.
there are clearly a great deal of studious music lovers on this board and i wish to take advantage of that resource...

now, i'm not saying i'm totally ignorant, but ask me about rock/metal albums.....
get what i'm saying?

Are you doing drugs? I try to stay away from these types of threads because I realize most of you guys don't know anything about rap or hip hop. Jay-Z is easily one of the top 5 best rappers of all time.

Biggie
Tupac
Jay-Z
Nas
Scarface/Easy E

Good call on Scarface Nas. Project Pat's Mista Don't Play and Mac Dre's Young Black Brother are two of my favorites.

I like my rap to be as threatening as possible. Thus, the work of P.O.W.E.R. (People Oppressed by the World's Entire Ruling elite) has long appealed to me. Their CD, Dedicated to World Revolution is one of my all-time favorite CDs and the song "Out of Control" has long been a sort of personal anthem for myself and a few friends:

Quote:
Programmed, trained, and educated, to follow, to ask no questions, to
believe what you are told
the truth may be dangerous if heard too often.
We enter the twenty first century divided, uncertain what the future may
hold, so powerless in a world controlled by so few, what can you do?
Driven by modern capitalism, every individual for themselves.
Survival of the fittest, competition, win, win, destroy your enemy,
your opponent, be number one.
Just like in America right?
On top of the fucking world.
Remember all you need to do is get a good ass job, a career, make lots
of money, buy lots of fun toys, consume, get a car, own a luxurious
home, wear the latest fashion or trend,
watch television, live above and beyond what you really need.
Most importantly, waste your fucking time, your life,
just as they want you to.
Besides, you deserve it, you're free....And this is America....
You are merely a product of the cultural, social, and celebrity elite,
who set all of your standards.
And no, of course, you're not at all a zombie or not at all brainwashed.
You are of sound mind while millions die and fall victim to the unnecessary
wars, disease, starvation, and many other atrocities caused and created
by your faithful leaders.
So go on, ignore the genocide, ignore the fourteen million people
expected to have HIV in America by the year 2000.
Ignore crime, poverty, violence, rape and the murder of women.
Ignore the false media, those locked in prison, capital punishment.
Ignore police brutality, FBI, CIA murder.
Ignore decent health care, housing, education.
Ignore safe and healthy food, and try not to think about the murder and
mass production of animals for slaughter.
Ignore the environment, toxic waste and contamination, pesticides,
the trees, land, water and air.
Ignore the government's drug trafficking and illegal activities around the globe.
Ignore the plight of the poor everywhere, the loss of culture, heritage,
tradition.
Ignore the weapons of mass destruction, and most importantly,
Ignore the Revolution.
Cause when it comes you'll be the first to die.

Quite a toe-tapper, eh?

I think Jay-Z is top 5. Reasonable Doubt, Blue Print, and The Black Album are all classics. I'll admit Kingdom Come wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I think his next album will be the one that will define is career possibly.

Killing us one by one
In one way or another
America will find a way to eliminate the problem
One by one
The problem is
the troubles in the black youth of the ghettos
And one by one
we are being wiped off the face of this earth
At an extremly alarming rate
And even more alarming is the fact
that we are not fighting back
Brothers, sistas, niggas
When I say niggas it is not the nigga we are grown to fear
It is not the nigga we say as if it has no meaning
But to me
It means Never Ignorant Getting Goals Acomplished, nigga
Niggas what are we going to do
Walk blind into a line or fight
Fight and die if we must, die like niggas

This is for the masses the lower classes
The ones you left out, jobs were givin', better livin'
But we were kept out
Made to feel inferior, but we're the superior
Break the chains in our brains that made us fear yah
Pledge a legiance to a flag that neglects us
Honour a man that that refuse to respect us
Emmancipation, proclamation, Please!
Nigga just said that to save the nation
These are lies that we all accepted
Say no to drugs but the governments' sceptic
Running through our community, killing the unity
The war on drugs is a war on you and me
And yet they say this is the Home of The Free
But if you ask me its all about hyprocracy
The constitution, Yo, it don't apply to me
Lady Liberty still the bitch lied to me
Steady strong nobody's gonna like what I pumpin'
But its wrong to keeping someone from learning something
So get up, its time to start nation building
I'm fed up, we gotta start teaching children
That they can be all that they wanna to be
There's much more to life than just poverty

This is defaintly ahhh words of wisdom
AMERIKA, AMERIKA, AMERIKKKA
I charge you with the crime of rape, murder, and assault
For suppressing and punishing my people
I charge you with robery for robbing me of my history
I charge you with false imprisonment for keeping me
Trapped in the projects
And the jury finds you guilty on all accounts
And you are to serve the consequences for your evil schemes
Prosecutor do you have any more evidience

Words of Wisdom
Based apon the strength of a nation
Conquer the enemy with education
Protect thy self, reach with what you wanna do
Know thy self, teach what we been through
Armed with the knowledge of the place, we been
No one will ever oppress this race again
No Malcolm X in my history text
Why is that?
Cause he tried to educate and liberate all blacks
Why is Martin Luther King in my book each week?
He told blacks, if they get smacked, turn the other cheek
I don't get it, so many questions went through my mind
I get sweated, They act as if asking questions is a crime
But forget it, one day I'm gonna prove them wrong
Now every brother had to mother on the welfare line
The american dream, though it seems it attainable
They're pulling your sleeve, don't believe
Cause it will strangle yah
Pulling the life of your brain, I can't explain
Beg as you can obtain from which you came
Swear that your mother is living in equality
Forgeting your brother that's living her apology
Thought they had us beat when they took our kids
But the battle ain't over till the black man sings
Words of Wisdom
But the battle ain't over till the black man sings
Words of Wisdom

NIGHTMARE thats what I am
America's nightmare
I am what you made me
The hate and the evil that you gave me
I shine of a reminder of what you have done to my people
for Four hundred plus years
You should be scared
You should be running
You should be trying to silence me
ha
But you can not escape fate
Well it is my turn to come
Just as you rose you will fall
By my hands
Amerika, You reap what you sow
2pacalypse America's Nightmare
Ice Cube and Da Lench Mob America's Nightmare
Above the Law America's Nightmare
Paris America's Nightmare
Public Enemy America's Nightmare
Krs-One America's Nightmare
Mutulu Shakur America's Nightmare
Geronimo Pratt America's Nightmare
Assada Shakur America's Nightmare

I'm not going to give a lot of opinions on music because I view it differently than you guys do. I do like T.I. - King though.

Nas, is Words of Wisdom an accurate description of how people really feel?

this is how the angry white kids feel:

This is the year where hope fails you
The test subjects run the experiments
And the bastard you know, is the hero you hate
But cohesing is possible if we strive
Theres no reason, theres no lesson
No time like the present, tell me right now
What have you got to lose, what have you got to lose
Except your soul... Who's with us?!

I fight for the unconventional
My right, and its unconditional
I can only, be as real as i can
The disadvantage is
I never knew the plan
This isnt just the way to be a martyr
I cant, walk alone any longer
I fight, for the ones who cant fight
And if I lose, at least I tried

We-we are the new diabolic
We-we are the bitter bucolic
If I have to give my life you can have it
We-we are the pulse of the maggots

I won't-be the inconsequential
I won't-be the wasted potential
I can make it-as severe as I can
Until you realize
You'll never take a stand
It isn't, just a one-sided version
We've dealt, with a manic subversion
I won't, let the truth be perverted
And I won't leave another victim deserted

We-we are the new diabolic
We-we are the bitter bucolic
If I have to give my life you can have it
We-we are the pulse of the maggots

Do you understand? (yes)

Say it again say it again (we won't die)

We fight until no one can fight us
We live, and no one can stop us
We pull when we're pushed too far
And the advantages is
The bottom line is
We never, had to fight in the first place
We only, had to spit back at their face
We won't, walk alone any longer
What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger

We-we are the new diabolic
We-we are the bitter bucolic
If I have to give my life you can have it
We-we are the pulse of the maggots

Do you understand (yes)

Say it again say it again (we won't die)

I bumped this because I find an old news/rumor story that I wanted to ask if anyone knew anything about but it doesnt need its own thread.

Foxy Brown accuses Jay or Statutory rape, being a tranny chaser, having a threesome with Jamie Foxx, and a long term fuck buddy relationship with Larry Johnson?

Anything come of this? Or just Foxy tryin to get back in the news.

I love Nas ripping WZ for even suggesting Jay is not a top 5 rapper. Wish I wouuld have been here to argue that one.
