Who is Bradley Woodrum and why is he stealing my posts?? He goes into more detail but these are the highlights:

1) Fill the Front Office

2) Trade Zambrano, Trade Soriano, Trade Byrd, Trade Soto

3) Say Good Bye to Ramirez, Pena, and 2012

This is pretty good:

By Barry Rozner ..Congratulations, Tom Ricketts.

Since the Cubs were officially put up for sale in April 2007, it’s taken him four years and six months to get something right.

It doesn’t excuse in any way the wasted years — and ticket buyers should be asking for refunds — but Ricketts went after the biggest fish and landed him.

Well done, Tom Ricketts.

As for Theo Epstein, he’s going to need a lot a lot of help as he rescues the Cubs from themselves and their history.

And, of course, we’re here to help him get started.

So here’s a quick list of items he can get to immediately:

• Fire Mike Quade.

• Have Crane Kenney moved out of the ballpark and into the Triangle Building. True, it’s not built yet, but let’s not quibble over the details.

• Pay the $2 million buyout and misplace the number for Aramis Ramirez’s agent, Paul Kinzer. Don’t locate that scrap of paper until Ramirez is overpaid somewhere else.

• Call Quade again and make sure he understands he’s fired.

• Get something of value for Carlos Zambrano, like a new Gatorade dispenser for the dugout.

• Trade Ryan Dempster and his $14 million player option for 2012. Dempster doesn’t have no-trade protection but never needed it when Jim Hendry was GM.

• Tell Carlos Pena he’s welcome back if he wants to play third base. When he informs you that left-handers don’t generally play third, ask him if he wants to catch. When he informs you lefties also don’t catch, tell him that the Cubs don’t need players with a bad attitude and wish him luck at his next stop.

• Check your pockets to see if Kenney has lifted your key to the private bathroom.

• Try to recoup some of the $54 million remaining on Alfonso Soriano’s contract. Since he has full no-trade protection, getting someone to pay more than $167 would immediately qualify you for the Hall of Fame.

• Feed Kenney some bogus info and when he leaks it to the usual suspects and it becomes public knowledge — and it will — send him from the Triangle Parking Lot to the Australian office.

• Since you report directly to Chief of Baseball, Tom Ricketts, report nothing to Tom Ricketts unless absolutely necessary and take no advice from ownership on anything unless it involves getting good seats at Fenway Park.

• Fire a pitching coach who doesn’t challenge a manager who allows Matt Garza to average 123 pitches in the final 3 starts of the season when the team is 62 games out of first place.

• Trade Marlon Byrd and his $6.5 million salary for 2012 before the other teams find out he’s actually 42 years old.

• Don’t ever say the words “Rodrigo Lopez’’ and “Reed Johnson’’ in the same sentence.

• Send Kenney from Australia to Borneo on a decade-long scouting trip. Why? The question is, why not?

• Trade as many veterans as you can for as many young players as you can and play as many kids as possible in 2012.

• Hire a manager who doesn’t want to be the players’ friend, can teach, insists on accountability and doesn’t make a person want to rip his eyelids off when the manager speaks.

• And for the love of Marc Pisciotta and all that’s holy, don’t yell, “We’re not that far away!!!’’

KS, he may not have to trade Z and Fonzie, they may be going to the BoSox in the trade for Epstein.

This made me laugh:

"The Cubs haven’t had a 7 bWAR player since Sammy Sosa, and only 1 time in 19 years; the Cardinals have had at least one for 11 of the last 14 years."

Why not just say the Cardinals have Albert Pujols? I guess that gets right to my dislike of the way modern statistical analysis has caused the game to be viewed. I don't have a problem with the actual stats themselves. In fact, I think they're great. It's the attitude of people who are eager to act as if they know more than someone else and choose to make the simple complicated in their relentless drive to do so.

By the way, I find it quite interesting that Fangraphs (bernstein's Bible) suggests that the Cubs may well be overpaying for Theo even without giving up Castro. I wonder if that will change li'l danny's mind.

"The deal appears to be worth $20M over five years, but the Cubs will undoubtedly need to send compensation (say, a prospect or some Benjamins) the Red Sox’s way — which may well escalate the cost beyond what’s beneficial to the Cubs."

How do you measure something like this though? This just seems like something to throw out there but with no way of really proving it. If he is successful with the Cubs then it was money well spent. If he fails with the Cubs then it is a move that not beneficial.

I am glad they are taking the gamble on him. People have been bitching for the last 2 years about Ricketts not being committed to doing what it takes to win with the organization. Now he goes out and gets the biggest fish in the pond and people still find a way to bitch about it.

Beneficial? Epstien brings the #1 product the Cubs have always sold, hope. This benefit will help them in attendance for at least one lean year. I expect by year 3 he will have the results of what he also brings, excellent scouting.

The first thing I would do is fire Quade and hire either Alomar or Martinez. The next thing I would do is trade Zambrano to Miami while crazy Ozzie has some say on player acquisition.

Dempster may not have a no-trade clause, but he has 10 and 5 rights, so he can veto any trade. I'd either trade him or give him a two year extension, with the salary being $4-$6 million less than the $14 million he's scheduled to make in 2012.

How is he going to bring excellent scouting if the scouting department is already in place?

Don't you think a new GM/President is going to get to put his own people in place? I doubt he would have taken the position otherwise.

ESPNChicago.com

The Chicago Cubs have hired another front office executive, adding Joe Bohringer as director of pro scouting, according to a major league source.

Bohringer, who has 21 years of major league baseball experience, had been working for the Arizona Diamondbacks since 2006 as a major league scout.

Boringer will assume one of the titles previously held by Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken, who had been both scouting director and director of professional scouting under former Cubs general manager Jim Hendry. Wilken's status is largely unaffected by the hiring of Bohringer, since Hendry's assistant GM, Randy Bush, had done most of the assignments for the professional scouts in the past.

Bohringer, a DeKalb, Ill. resident, uses the same methods as the people who he'll be working for, employing statistical analytics as well as practical scouting when evaluating players. Under Bohringer's direction, Cubs scouts will likely be told to use video recording of players as an added tool to evaluate Cubs players.

According to numerous sources, Bohringer also had a chance to stay in Arizona or to go with new Los Angeles Angels GM Jerry Dipoto, who was previously vice president of player personnel with the Diamondbacks.

Bohringer is an MIT grad from the Sloan School of Management. He previously worked in different scouting capacities with the Seattle Mariners and also worked as director of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Well I guess that answers my question. Theo is hiring 'around' the guys already in place. It doesn't look like Theo is too impressed with the great Tim Wilken and his staff.

The whole Hayden Simpson thing makes me laugh. When the Cubs drafted him 16th overall in 2010 every draft/prospect 'expert' ripped the selection and said what an obvious over reach it was. When they prepared their Cubs top prospects lists the next off season they all listed Simpson towards the top. John Sickels had him 5th, Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs had him 7th and Baseball America ranked him 8th. Why?? Because of where he was drafted?? Because of how much money he signed for?? Were they all afraid the Cubs knew something they didn't??

Simpson went on to prove their initial thoughts correct by going 1-10 with a 6.27 ERA while getting knocked all the way back to extended spring training and I can't imagine he'll show up on anyone's top 10 list this off season.

Just keep this in mind when you read top prospects lists this off season.

OK Scout Soze now why don't you tell the rest of the Hayden Simpson story; Shortly after signing with the Cubs, Simpson came down with mononucleosis, which prevented him from joining the Cubs minor league system in 2010 as well as playing in the fall or winter leagues. He lost 22 lbs while sick and also lost strength. Most people knew 2011 was nothing but a rehab year.

It does not matter what the facts are, if the kid is in the Cub system Keyser is going to have negative things to say.

The Sox draft this past year was brutal, but yet if you listen to Keyser they did some good things. It is just the way things go around here.

So far the Epstein/Hoyer moves all make sense to me. Picking up Ramirez' s option for 2012 saved them a 2 million dollar buyout and ensured they get a draft pick when someone else signs him to a multi-year deal. Talking with Dempster-which resulted in him invoking the final year on his deal was good. He might not be a true top of the rotation guy, but the Cubs are short on pitching, he gives them 200 innings and gives them a chance in most games to win. Firing Quade quickly was also a good move, in order to get started with the new Manager search before Boston and St Louis got guys they might have wanted most. So far, so good...
