I'm a bit torn on this one, and I've followed its production for a while. The nice thing is that this isn't a remake, it's just telling the story of the Norwegian camp (that now includes a woman)...they covered themselves by saying that there were some American scientists that joined the Norwegians. And the director wanted to follow all of the scenes with the Norwegians in "The Thing" to a T so I give him credit. Also, they are using anamatronic special effects along with CGI because the makers didn't want it to look fake.

On the other hand...it doesn't look that thrilling, and the few shots I've seen of the thing don't impress me nor do they scare me.

Rob Bottin's original effects were amazing; probably some of the best, most horrifying effects I've ever seen in a horror film. But I do kinda wanna give this movie a chance.

probably won't be able to catch it this weekend but I'm gonna try to see it sometime.

I won't see it in the theater but I'd like to see what they did with it. The Thing still gives me
chills at points. I have had the original on my DVR for over a year and still haven't checked it
out cause it freaks me out. Waiting for it to get cold and snow on the ground so I can really
get into it. Kurt Russell kills it, Brimley isn't bad either. Top five thriller in my book.

the original is actually "thing from another world".

but "the thing" draws more from the story that both were based on, "who goes there?" which is a very lovecraftian novella.

kurt russell's top 3 characters: jack burton, r.j. macready, snake plissken.

:P Reno Hightower from The Best Of Times and Wyatt Earp from Tombstone are close to the top 5.

Edit -- Didn't even think of Bull from Backdraft.... pretty underrated actor.

The whole movie is just fuckin' creepy and tense. From the first infected dog to the head spider to trying to keep track of who is "infected" and who isn't.

And of course, the final scene and that damn bottle of J&B.

EDIT: Can't forget Dr. Blair being the first to get "compromised", shouldn't have put that damn pencil in his mouth.

I am also torn about this movie. As evidenced by my avatar, The Thing is one of my favorite movies. The way I look at it is nothing could ever compare to John Carpenter's version for many reasons. It was the first "scary" movie I ever saw (at 6 years old, what the hell were my parents thinking?). It has freaked me out from then until now. The use of paranoia and amazing practical effects make it a classic that I have to watch every winter. Lastly, R.J. McCready.

But, they are doing a prequel instead of a remake and it now gives me a chance to actually see something Thing-related on the big screen for the first time instead of a jvc vhs (with wired remote) that we had when I first saw Carpenter's version. I have been following this on several boards and what I have seen and heard seems pretty cool (except the ending from leaked script). Knowing that this will not live up to The Thing standard, I will happily see this at the show not expecting to much and hoping to be entertained.

Agreed!!!

At 1st I didnt want anything to do with this movie cuz I thought it was just another remake but now that I just found out that its a prequel I will give it a shot...when its on dvd.

The original is one of the creepiest movies ever. The claustrophobic setting and atmosphere really sets the tone. Just horrifying

I have not seen the original (yeah I know....Horror Film Buff like me...), and I see that it is available for stream on Netflix, so I will be checking this out in the next two days, and will go see the prequel this weekend.

Snake Plisssken should get points off for Escape from L.A. And really an honorable mention needs to go to Stuntman Mike.

good point, gun; and your avatar ranks among my favorites here. never change it.

spmack - the original "the thing" or the ORIGINAL "thing from another world"?

Snake Plissken also gets points off for those camo spandex and not banging Adrienne Barbeau in every single scene.
