New documentary on tonight about the real life guy that supposedly inspired Sylvester
Stallone to write the script for Rocky. I'll try to watch and give a brief review.

Chuck Wepner and his 1975 fight with Ali.

There's an article about him on Grantland today too. Hopefully the documentary is better than the article.

It wasn't.

He should pay Stallone for making the boring-ass life of a bad fighter seem like it could be interesting.

i just watched it, i thought it was kind of funny. the story wasn't exactly enthralling, but the director did some pretty creative things production-wise and made it kind of fun and kitschy to watch. the guy seems like he has made a pretty nice life for himself as a local celebrity.

I missed this last night but doesn't sound like I missed a whole lot. Maybe I'll catch it on rerun.

I understand why it didn't make the cut for the first round of 30 for 30. There was no depth to the story. I think that's because they are planning on making a movie entirely based on his life. I don't know if it will be good or not, but apparently Christina Hendricks is attached...so I'll watch it once.

I was entertained. Of course, I was cooped up in a hotel in Shelton, CT, so I may not be the best judge.

I was surprised Wepner was as coherent as he was given how many beatings he took. His face after the Ali fight was gruesome to behold. I also found it interesting how Ali wanted him to use the "n" word. I enjoyed the scene from the Mike Douglas show and respect that Wepner didn't want to use it, even though it was Ali's idea.

The other thing I took away from it was how much of a scumbag Stallone is. I know they settled Wepner's lawsuit out of court, but for Stallone to "Mariotti" his stance on whether Wepner was or wasn't the inspiration for Rocky was a joke.

Yeah the article mentions the movie but it sounds like in this case fiction is more interesting than the real story. I'll probably skip the movie. Didn't see the documentary but like T-bone said, doesn't sound like I missed a lot there.

From what I read Stallone said dozens of times that Wepner was the inspiration for the movie but then balked when Wepner's wife Linda told him to actually collect money for the movies.

Maybe I overstepped. It was alright but near the bottom of the list of ESPN docs of late. The best parts were scenes from Rocky and all it did was make me want to watch Rocky again.
