When I say gambles that came up aces its not discounting anything. Every Gm has to gamble every year. Every player is a gamble to some extent.

Here's the argument.

I believe that most of the players acquired in the off season going in to 05 performed beyond expectations. I mean like 5 or 6 guys.

Whether thats true or not, the credit goes to Kenny. Either he knew who to gamble on or he just got good players.

Jermaine Dye, Scott Podsednik, Jose Contreras*, Cliff Politte, Dustin Hermanson, and A.J. performed better than I expected them to. Maybe I had low expectations, but mine were pretty much in line with what all the experts were saying at the time.

Dye was coming off two mediocre years, Podsednik was coming off a bad slide back year in Mil. Obviously no one knew Hermanson could save 30 games. Politte was out of his mind. The A.J. thing is a little different. I always liked him but he was blackballed that year. I believe he was signed in like february or march...pretty late for an all star catcher.

* I realize Contreras was acquired mid season 04, it was a move for 05

You just got off on your "this is a terrible argument that a bunch of guys got lucky or had career years" argument and went from there.

Now you may say that all championship teams have guys have career years. I believe it is more prevalant with some teams than others.

Its what I call the "Everything coming together" effect. Ya know right time right place for a bunch of players. With teams like the Yankees and Phillies it wasnt as surprising and their players didnt really outperform expectations, with the Giants and the Sox they did.

Like I said, either good gambles by Kenny or shrewd Gming by Kenny. Either way it works out. I just think Kenny had a few more "fliers" work out than most.

It was a tough field. Spark had another strong showing. Hank made his presence felt as well. Others had some good contributions, but you stole the show with this hilarious take on Dan Bernstein's over-the-top Theo Epstein love:

I just think there was more right time right place kind of stuff. It was never intended to take credit from Kenny Williams. No matter how he did it....he did it and thats all that matters.

The only time Ive ever taken credit away from Kenny is when Ranger told me I was crazy to say he's not a top 5 GM. I mean I dont think he is, its fine if you do.

But just because I dont think he's brilliant doesnt mean I think he's bad or that Im bashing the white sox.

Ive had no problem giving the White Sox credit for a lot of things. But it seems like if any Sox fan gets questoned on an opinion like

"Don Cooper is one of the best in the game" or

"Kenny Williams is a top 5 gm for sure"

Its seen as Sox bashing.

I think with the moves he made say from '03 thru '06 a lot of people would have considered him one of the game's great GMs. '07 and '08 was ok. '09 thru the present has been pretty brutal.
