At the press conference he made it seem like this was a long decision to finally figure out he wanted Epstein. I think it's a no-brainer and that was lucky the Red Sox collapsed because I doubt he would have got him otherwise. He seemed to have no real plan and than he nabs the most qualified GM in the majors.

Rather be lucky than good. Nobody luckier than the Ricketts kids!

So he seemed to have 'no plan' because he was following his plan of keeping his GM search on the down low? Got it.

Genius in business is, in large part, recognizing when an opportunity presents itself and acting on it. This is what I find so disppointing about the Sox off season.

I think there were other good GMs available who might have arrived with a little less fanfare but would have been equally productive. In a lot of ways, Hoyer and McCloud are going to be more important to this reclamation than Epstien.

Super lucky. If he had planned on doing this it never would have happened. Things just kinda fell into place perfectly for this to happen.

I'm sure he planned to get a big name GM. He was lucky in the fact that Francona quit which apparently was the catalyst for Epstein leaving (since he said he planned to leave after next year, but didn't want to hire a new manager because he thought the next GM should do that).

However, I think Ricketts had Friedmann as his backup if Epstein wouldn't have been available. He looks to be going to the Angels to be their President.

I give credit to Ricketts for getting the big name guy, but he was lucky that Epstein came available. Unless there was an MLB conspiracy to tank the Red Sox season and smear Francona to get Epstein out of Boston and to Chicago where the MLB could make even more money off of Cubs fans through selling hope. Maybe Q. Bovifs has some insight.

Well, Ricketts did mention early on that he would like to pattern the Cubs after the Red Sox organization.
Give Ricketts credit for getting the best guy available for the job.

I take back everything bad that I ever said about Tom Ricketts.

The Cubs love will be over the top next year like we have never seen before.
Especially if Theo hires you-know-who as Manager.

We don't need to go that far.

Yes, Ricketts got lucky, but he doesn't land Theo & Co, without actively being out there looking.
