Sherlock is a modern update of (duh) Sherlock Holmes from the BBC. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock & the more recognizable Martin Freeman (Tim from The Office UK) as Watson. The first season has only three episodes but they are pretty good. If you have read any or all of the original Holmes stories, you will see a lot of similarities and even if you haven't read the stories but like mysteries, this is a pretty good show.

Sounds interesting... Have you seen the film, from the 70s I think, where sherlock holmes is paired up with sigmund freud to solve a crime? As a fellow psych afficianado Im sure you'd appreciate that... Sort of controversial, but yeah...

Yeah, it was called the 7% solution. it was something. The 70s were a fascinating time...a fascinating coked up time. I tend to minimalize Freud in my classes as in interesting historical note, fun but not a significant figure in current psychology.

I grew up a freud guy, but I think jung is more important nowadays...

In my personality theory course, when I talk about the psychodynamic approaches to personality, I prefer Erikson's theory of personality development over the other approaches. The one thing I do like about the psychodynamic approach is that it was one of the first theories to jump on the theory of evolution and how it might explain the psyche of the human. Which was a precursor to the field of evolutionary psychology. However, I usually do not talk about the psychodynamic approach until the last couple weeks of the semester because the most important and heavily researched approach in the field right now is the trait approach.

Damn... Yeah I was taught erickson's model in school, but I never knew how popularized the trait theory approach has become. Isn't that sort of implementing a state of darwinism into psychology? Not to say it doesn't exist already... And I agree w/ the theory outright, but I also am of the mind each person has an intelligence to be exposed. The various environmental and socioeconomic limitations are the hurdles of most people... Wow. Just babbling now. Ha. Good talk Psycory.

The trait approach is percieved as more of an 'individual differences' approach which is rather rare in psychology. Instead of looking for similarities in people (like the old theories) the approach looks at the how/why people are different/unique. The most used/researched trait theory used to try to explain much of personality right now is the Big 5 factor personality theory. I have some issues with the theory, but it probably does do the best job in terms understanding personality and behavior.

Ev psychology in it's current form is rather new and still rather controversial in psychology. I think it is interesting and I do some research within the field. I suggest reading Buss's Evolutionary Psychology: The New Science of the Mind. It's the textbook I use in the course I teach, Buss has a way of sounding rather arrogant (his basic premise: ev psych is the most important thing to ever happen to psychology) in the book, but the theory is really interesting and he is a great author.

Very cool.. Ill look into that... Also interesting you noticed what could almost be called a marketing angle to ev psych by dr. Buss...

HELLO! 2010 JUST CALLED AND WANTS ITS NEW CUTTING EDGE TELEVISION EVENT BACK!!!!

hey speeps, any bets on who moffat's going to pen to be the "mysterious" river song figure for this series of sherlock? =D

i remember reading someone on gallifrey base lamenting "first jekyll n hyde... then doctor who... now sherlock?! how many more british institutions is steven moffat going to get a chance to rape?" =D =D =D

fwiw, i enjoyed those three sherlock 90min "events." i didn't have any real umbrage or issues with it short of the whole "is he or isn't he" in regards to sherlock's potential gayness (i don't watch sherlock holmes mysteries to wonder what sherlock's sticking his dick into, thanks) and i rather look forward to the next batch of episodes whenever they pop up.

hey psycory, when telling people about a wonderful show that you like and thusly they should go and watch via a new thread, maybe telling them when it's on will help. and even BBC One airtimes help too cuz like, some people aren't going to wait ~6-9 months for the episodes to start popping up as part of the "Masterpiece! Mysteries" series on PBS, you know.

I didn't see them on the BBC or PBS; I saw them on this cool thing called the internet, I tried to find times when it's airing on the internet, but apparently you can pick when you want to watch it.

well see, if you were to putz around you'd see that series 2 is set to air in "early 2012" with the PBS debuts slated for "may 2012" --- i reckon i'll come back to this thread when i find out anything.

if you want to give another BBC show a shot, i'd recommend luther. season one starts off a bit slow but then i forget if it's episode 3 or 4 and then BAM!!! shit's twisted and off to the races.... and series 2 is also pretty damn proper, but they need to get ruth wilson back into the series bigtime for series 3. how's she gonna let her man go on without her? she owned it whenever she was on the show, IMHO.

can i tell a little story about red dwarf?

thanks.

i never watched the BBC series, until only...like 10 years ago. but in high school, i read the books. "infinity welcomes careful drivers" and "better than life" were freaking awesome. i loved them.

i traveled to spain in high school, and on the way, picked up "backwards" at W.H. smith's in england (it was only available over there at the time).

before "backwards", though, i drafted a script of "infinity" in 1995. during the days of AOL, i was in a Q&A of "tank girl" director, rachel talalay. i asked her a question and got her email address. i emailed her, and told her about my draft. she was interested.

i never sent it... :| i was 16, and really really undisciplined as a writer. but by god...it still gets me that to this day, i had a chance...now...she never amounted to anything, and "tank girl" was a colossal failure. but she was interested, especially since i was so young, and she loved the premise.

i wonder if she ever got around to watching the TV series.

she would've been pretty good as a director for the material, too...

"Tank Girl"... now there's an interesting comic. The movie was interesting because (to me) it seemed like a big advert for the comic, but itself didn't draw me in.

Those two books were from the series' "Douglas Adams" period. Very densely packed. They eventually began to put less detail into the show; didn't suffer for it.

I gather they're going to relaunch the series, with the same actors. We'll see. That movie has taken a long time to show up...

Bump. Just started watching this on Netflix and think its pretty good. Done with the first 3 episodes. Cumberbatch is really good as Holmes.
