not a whole lot of you are gonna check this out anyway but i will throw my two cents in.
it's not that good.
I was a little concerned that this was being helmed by Roland Emmerich, especially since he's on record as not being a big Shakespeare fan. So that'd pretty much be like getting Irish Boy to do a movie on John Lennon. The idea here is that Shakespeare wasn't really the writer of these timeless legendary plays, but it was an aristocrat named Edward de Vere.
The performances are the only bright spot in this otherwise somewhat uptight costume period piece that has far too many characters and not enough real drama...it's a shame when the bits of the Shakespeare plays we see are more moving than the film itself.
The guy who played Shakespeare reminded me 100% of Tom Hulce in Amadeus.
it's a shame this wasn't that great...it had a lot of promise, and this script's been waiting to be made since before "Shakespeare in Love" came out. and that was one of the reasons it was shelved. It was in the wrong hands...and it really doesn't make much sense why Emmerich did this film.
mixed review from me.
