Tom Loxas, Sunday at 11:35 pm

A GM tells Phil Rogers that Theo Epstein will likely bring change to Wrigley Field in more ways than one, including trading in the famous scoreboard for a jumbotron.

"I wouldn't look for that old scoreboard to be sitting on top of the center-field bleachers for many more years,'' the general manager said. "There's $20 million [a year) sitting up there if they put up a giant Jumbotron. I know people are attached to tradition, to that scoreboard, but is taking it down any bigger change than putting seats on top of the Green Monster?

I say do it.

They can mix the old with the new. Put a Jumbotron up there but keep at least the Cubs game scoreboard hand run.

couldn't they keep the scoreboard, which is as iconic as the big dumb red sign out front, AND have the jumbotron?

much like they used the toyota sign in the distance... couldn't they fuck with some bitchass rooftop that pissed htem off by erecting a jumbotron off to the right or the left of the scoreboard and say "...BUY TICKETS AT WRIGLEY PREMIUM SEATING SERVICES, EVERYONE!!"

or hell, just move the toyota sign over a bit (as it's in front of that closed roof that always has a budweiser ad on it or something) and erect it there. cuz if they try to scrap the original scoreboard and put in a jumbotron, you know it's going to be some ungodly hybrid of the old scoreboard and a jumbotron and it will be aesthetically yuck.

incidentally, the wrigley scoreboard updates with balls and strikes quicker than any electronic scoreboard i've seen in other parks... is anyone with me here?

SOLD!

But they signed an agreement with the city they would not ask for such items for 4 years in order to get the Toyota sign up in a hurry. So 2 years remain on that agreement.

Maybe they can get Gov Thompson to renegotiate that deal?

Put the Scoreboard outside on the new building! Could care less....and take the troffs with!

Thats what I was going to say. Take it down and put it somewhere else outside.

I bet the scoreboard is like the one thing they can't get rid of because of the National Register and such. Which is fine by me. I like the scoreboard.

I suspect getting Ricketts to make major changes to that park is going to be like getting the owners of one of the failing joints on Bar Rescue to do what Taffer tells them without arguing. Yeah, he'll squeeze an ad in here or there but he isn't going to radically alter the stuff he loved when he came there as a fan. Unless his daddy screams at him that this is a fucking loser he got him into.

Tell the boy wonder he's looking the wrong way. Turn around, every now and then I feel a little bit colder.

Sorry, my mind was wandering,He should worry about field issues first. The scoreboard can wait. Really, what's 20 mil gonna get him anyway?

What the hell would anyone miss from the old scoreboard?? Waiting to get updates on scores in the out of town games? Would you miss NOT having replays to view?? Would you really hate to see highlights, bloopers, and player stats when players come up to bat, other than the limited ones they can fit on the digital screen they have?? I love Wrigley Field, but getting some new creature comforts and an updated scoreboard to improve the experience there is fine by me.

The Jumbotron would most likely look exactly like the scoreboard now (probably retrofit to the existing scoreboard to keep the clock and shape). Will just have a screen in the middle and the games will have digital scores.

Curious Hair understands this; I'm not sure why you and bernstein and so many others don't. Why do you think the Cubs are the Cubs? Because of their storied history of winning? Because so many people just gravitate to being Cub fans? Because of all the famous hits that have come off Cub pitching?

Do you really think that if the Cubs played in a "ballmall" and the Sox played in the quaint old park the fortunes of both teams and the way they are viewed wouldn't be the exact opposite of what they are?

When they finally kill the golden goose you'll be sorry.

I think there are plenty of viable options. The fans want it and there is money to be made / had. It's gotta happen.

Nobody wants to change the configuration of the park, the Ivy on the walls, the Marquee at the corner of Clark and Addison. But changing the scoreboard IMPROVES the fan experience. There will always be plenty of old fashioned charm at the Ballpark with or without the scoreboard. As previously mentioned here, the border of the current scoreboard could encompass the new scoreboard and the clock atop the scoreboard could remain intact as well. I'm sure they can make it work.

The only fucking thing that IMPROVES the EXPERIENCE is colder BEER and fresher Peanuts.

Jumbotrons are terrible. I understand the monetary benefit but they are only an annoyance.

Can't they just hang signs above and below the scoreboard now? They can make them "retro" advertisements to give the park that "1950-something" feel.

Yeah, we really need blooper reels between at-bats to supplement the blooper reel that is the Cubs. BIBGO!

Zoning. No signs allowed.

But plenty of room for both.

They could have 2 screens ....one each attached to & extended from the right and left sides of the existing scoreboard.

They should get rid of the organ too. Players like to come out to heavy metal and the fans love it!

the old scoreboard means nothing. get into the 21st century in that respect. it's ridiculous that they can't even fit all the other scores on there sometimes.

What parts of the park are meaningful? Maybe they should just build a state-of-the-art dome.

Great, then they can host the Super Bowl and the Final Four.
