Tribune reporter

3:52 p.m. CDT, November 1, 2011
Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said he and Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein are "comfortable" with Commissioner Bud Selig deciding compensation over Epstein's departure from the Red Sox.

"Both sides are comfortable with that outcome if it happens that way," Cherington said, according to a Boston Globe report.

At a Tuesday news conference to introduce Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod, Epstein said there still was no resolution to the compensation stalemate.

"Either it will be turned over to MLB at the end of the day ... or there will be an extension of the window for the two clubs to talk," Epstein said.

The two sides have been haggling over compensation since Epstein agreed to a five-year deal to head the Cubs' front office on Oct. 12. But the Red Sox insist on at least one top prospect in return, an idea the Cubs have balked at from the start.

When Epstein and Cherington officially took over the baseball departments of their respective clubs on Oct. 21, Selig gave them until Nov. 1 to work out a deal. But Cherington admitted there has been little progress in negotiations.

"It's a difficult deal to work out because it's too hard to quantify the value of Theo Epstein," Cherington said. "I have an idea of it, and Theo doesn't think he's worth as much as I do. We haven't been able to bridge that gap yet."

My Guy said the Sox want Castro,Brett Jackson and 8 million dollars.

The Cubs offered one of Santo's old toupees and a container of Bob Brenlys moustache wax.

JBills,

I think if I was the commisoner,I would give the Red Sox 3 players. I would ask the Cubs to give me a list of A,B & C players (A being the best, etc.) I would than have the Cubs remove any 3 players from the 3 lists they choose. The Sox would than have their pick...one guy from each list.

I don't understand why the Sawx are balking at the offer of Quade as 3rd base coach.

They are going to probably get 1 mid level so-so prospect and 1 low level prospect. I figure its either McNutt or Junior Lake on the mid level side and Taiwan Easterling on the low level side.

Supposedly, according to Bruce Levine, they had reached an agreement on Carpenter, but the Sox pulled out at the last minute.
