Wow after reading this I might get on a level of Theo giddyness that only new Cubs fan Dan Bernstein can surpass. Really great stuff.
(I realize this is fish flakes for Bonermaker and Cantstandya but I guess if the Sox had this and we had their train wreck I might stalk the Sox section.)

Trib:
One part of the process is game simulations, in which the candidate is handed lineup cards, statistics, a history of the relievers' workloads and other relevant facts. A candidate will watch a tape of a game with the Cubs' brass, who will stop the tape at various junctures to ask the candidate what he would do in a particular situation.

"We'd try to create some intensity, so we got right in his face and asked for an answer pretty quickly," president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. "We weren't looking so much as to what the managerial candidate said, in terms of the strategy he would employ, but what pieces of information he would use — what his thought process would be in trying to make a decision (under pressure)."

Interesting. I also heard bruce levine yesterday say that the managerial candidates will also be presented to the media and that the Cubs brass will use that as part of their overall evaluation as well.

Just hire the right fucking guy to deal with all the bullshit drama surrounding this team. Whatever that takes.

I've also heard they show pictures of Mike Quade to see how the candidates react and are then shown examples of his managerial prowess to get their feedback.

I'm of the belief that far too much as made of managers as far as in-game decisions are concerned. The manager's biggest job is to set the tone for the team and handle the egos in the clubhouse. It sounds to me that Epstein is looking for the same SABRmetric manager that Beane wants- someone who is not really a manager at all, but rather a drone who makes decisions based on existing percentages. You could probably just have Ryan Dempster lean over and look at computer and save a couple million.

Perhaps the Cubs and Sox can share Ventura? He can just sit in an office with a computer in front of him and be on a cell phone to the bench coaches

I think they should hire Ryne Sandberg.

What do they do during the BP Cup?*

And this is reason #1 I hope they fail miserably. And then have them quietly go stick to fantasy sports.

Not to go all "bearnsie" or anything...but I think these guys understand that a manager has a hell of lot more to do than make in game decisions. A lot of in game decisions are almost "push button" anyway....so I think you are correct in your assesment of what a managers "biggest" job is.

I agree about the role of a manager. Other than the wise use of the pitching staff, the differences in game are marginal.

THeo should just be the manager the team. Then Berns could could rub one out every time Theo goes to the mound for a pitching change.

RR, did you happen to read the Sun-Times article on Hoyer the other day that made it sound as if his biggest credential for being GM was the fact that he beat some adults in a Boston fantasy league when he was thirteen?

No, I've bypassed virtually all new triumvirate talk since about Day 2 of this epic.

But I'm not surprised. Fantasy is the new Big Boy Baseball that prepares any good exec. to get us/them closer to a WS title

Despite Bernstein's very brief admission that SABREmetrics alone weren't enough to build a successful franchise

Yeah, we actually have people that have their shit straight. I love it.

I understand people's dislike for Bernstein's over the top love. I also understand the misguided belief that everyone thinks Theo is the "savior". I was excited with the hire. I loved the press conferences. I love everything I've seen and heard so far. If you are a fan of the Cubs, there is nothing more you could ask for in the present day situation. Pete Mackanin sounded like he was just rescued from WAR.

This is awesome.

No rain outs, because he can cover the field with his Umbrella-ella-ella.

So they have interviewed three so far, is that right? older dude from the Phillies, Sveum, and now Maddox? Are there any others going to be interviewed? Gotta think they made a decision on this one soon.
