Cubs, Buehrle's Agent Have Had Multiple Discussions

By Luke Adams [November 15 at 10:02pm CST]

The Cubs have had multiple discussions with Mark Buehrle's agent Jeff Berry, a source tells Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Berry also met with Marlins earlier today.

Earlier in November, we heard that the Cubs would have interest in the longtime White Sox pitcher "if the price tag and years aren't astronomical." Considering the number of Buehrle rumors we've heard so far this offseason, there appears to be plenty of competition, but we don't have a clear idea yet of the years and dollars the lefty might be offered.

The Nationals, Diamondbacks, White Sox, and Rangers are among the other clubs who could be in on the bidding for Buehrle's services.

**I doubt he'd come to the Cubs, but it would be a solid signing for sure.

I think this would be a very good move for the Cubs.

He is going to give you innings. Counting on a guy to pitch 200 innings is huge. He has pitched over 200 innings every full season of his career. Now you may lose a few innings due to pinch hitting strategies in the NL but you can't get any more durable and consistent as this guy.

He is a career winner. He has a ring. He can provide a veteran leadership that will be different from current guys like Dempster and Wood.

He can be gotten for a 3 yr reasonable salary which would be worth it if you can pencil him in for 600 innings over the next 3 years.

I wouldn't advertise this fact. Spada is a fucking jock sniffing self-promoting ambulance chaser.

He won't come "reasonable" but I def. would like to see him signed. I'd say at minimum, 3 yrs 36M, but he'll prob get 4 yrs 50M+ offers. The guy is a pro's pro.

I think it will take much more to get him to play for the Cubs than any other team. I think he will take something reasonable to pitch for the Sox, Cards, and Marlins. He will take fair market from other teams. I think it would have to be above market for him to sign with the Cubs.

All depends on what kind of numbers and years he wants but for 3 years and Ted Lilly money I would definately give him a shot. If for no other reason than to make Frank and Keyser crazy.

I would like to think that Meat's opinion on this is completely wrong. The Sox aren't going to bring him back, but out of respect to the god damn chairmen he would never consider signing with the Cubs. That is about as meatball as you can get.

Meatball? How about meatball Cub fans who wouldn't want Buehrle because he played for the Sox or Pujols because he played for the Cards? I don't know who Buehrle will sign with but it will either be for 3/45 or 4/56.

I can't see him signing with the Cubs either unless they are the only midwestern team offering competitive dollars. I doubt he wants to go east to Boston or NYY and maybe he doesn't want to revisit Ozzie World.

I'd certainly like to see him on the North side though!!

Buehrle's agent talking to the Cubs just proves how great the Cubs manager (whoever he is)has been the last 3 years.

What people or non-mults are saying this? I think most Cub fans respect the hell out of Buehrle and would be more than happy to have him in the rotation at a reasonable price. Cub fans don't buy into signing Pujols because he is getting old and is going to command a ton of years and a record amount of money.....and he is going to be overpaid, old and years past his prime towards the end of a 7-9 year contract. It has nothing to do with him being a Cardinal.

Theo Epstein was clear as to the kind of free agents they might target and the age of a potential signee. Buehrle does not fit within his stated guidelines and I am glad to know that this is not the kind of free agent they would target. A guy that is basically a .500 pitcher on the wrong side of his prime is not what they need. Buehrle benefited from the 6 man rotation last season that Guillen used for a period of time. It helped Buehrle stay fresher and perform better down the stretch, rather than fading as he had the previous 3 seasons toward the end of the year. His record against NL teams is outstanding, but that was built while a younger man and should not be viewed as a certain predictor of performance in 2012, should he pitch in the NL this coming season. Guys approaching/in their prime should be targeted instead

I have a number of meatball Cub acquaintances who have said this. Check out the message board at cubs.com. It is a haven for the]kind of meatballs who think like this.
