I don't like the way his name is spelled. Plus, people will "butcher" the pronunciation. :P

This picture cements him as the best possible choice.

Agreed. Anyone who wears a picture of a chick on their tee under their uni is fine by me. Sweet tats too.

From the various pics I have seen he has dual forearm tatts and a half sleave on one of the arms. Dude is a straight up bad ass and a fan of the greatest team on earth.

I am all for them taking the guy the BoSox wanted after all of the compensation kerfuffle. Sveum is the greatest manager in MLB history. Unless this story is a fake and hes not coming to the Cub.

I believe this would be a damn good move for the Cub.

I'd take Francona over Sveum any day.

My optimism comes purely from the fact that you're not sold on the deal, and I find myself thinking the best moves are the ones you don't like.

Solid logic, albeit esoteric!

And who says I don't like it? I'm open minded. Maddux (who I liked) backed out and it appears he was their top choice. I have to believe Theo/Hoyer know what they are doing and given Sveum was the third base coach on the '04 Bosox championship season, they should know the guy and what they are getting.

Who am I not to give them the benefit of the doubt??

I hope he turns out to be a solid choice.

If they were going to hire a 3rd base coach I just wish it was Wendell Kim

Maddux would have been my first choice, if your not going to spend a ton of money in the offseason then you are going to need improvements from your holdovers. I would have liked to have seen Maddux work with Dempster, Marmol, Wells and the young guys like Cashner.

I was disappointed that Maddux took his name out of consideration.

Svuem doesn't excite me (to be fair none of the other candidates excite me either) but you have to give Theo the benefit of the doubt.

Plus I am sure fans looked at Francona in 2004 or Belichick in '99 or Torre in '96 and thought retreads...but they did pretty well for themselves.

Torre is one of the most overrated managers of all time. You can hand me the highest payroll by far every year, and I could manage a team to a world series. Everywhere else he has been has been a failure, and it's not bad luck to blame.

I am interested in what the new manager does with Rudy Jaramillo. Theo, and I assume Sveum also, wants his players to grind out at bats. Not sure if Rudy subscribes to that theory, especially watching the Cubs the last couple of years.

i could not agree more...i have heard people here say that larussa benefitted more with hgh/roids than any manager..not true..torre has...torre was average to below average in l.a. until a juiced up manny arrived..and he had easily the most juiced up,highest paid lineup in new york.

I don't think the Yankee teams of the late '90 had a monster payroll, the disparity between the Yanks and the rest of baseball wasn't as great as it is now.

The Yankees has some cheap young talent, Jeter, Bernie Williams, Riviera, Posada. But they also had guys who, while good players, they weren't exactly great players... Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neill. Then you had guys like Scott Brosius, Chalie Hayes, Girardi, Knoblauch.

It seems to me the bigger the Yankee payroll became, the less the Yankees in the last decade won, compared to the 90's teams.

Torre did a better job managing a young team in the '90's than an older all star team in the last decade.

It is hard to determine how good Torre was as a manager, looking at him in the Mets, Braves, and Cardinals years vs the Yankee and Dodger years. Sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time.

2/3 of the planet is covered by water....the other 1/3 is covered by Garry Maddox! The Giants had a great outfield back in the day-with Gary Matthews, Garry Maddox and Bobby Bonds. Matthews was never a great outfielder, but with Maddox in CF, he didn't have to cover too much ground and man could those guys hit too!

I'm okay with the choice they made, as everyone I have heard talk about Sveum has sounded exceptionally positive about him. I was hoping the choice would be Maddux, but perhaps he did turn the job down.
