You've got to be bleepin' me! I could've sworn that NBC's parent company Universal did a modern update of "The Munsters" back in the early '90s that used to air in syndication on WPWR 50 locally, long before they became FOX's My Network TV outlet.

It was called "The Munsters Today", which if memory serves, had John Schuck from "McMillan & Wife" fame as "Herman Munster", Lee Meriwether from "Barnaby Jones" as "Lily" and Howard Morton, the bumbling, stumbling "Officer Simpson" from "Gimme a Break" in the '80s as "Grandpa". Needless to say, it was a far cry from the original series which lasted from 1964-66 on CBS and has been rerun on outlets such as MeTV locally, as well as WGN America, DIRECTV 307, and Nick at Nite's TV Land, DIRECTV 304 nationally in recent years.

Remakes are still huge business. Right now,these 3 shows are being
worked into movies:

* The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

* The Fall Guy

* The 6 Billion (not kidding) Dollar Man

There was also talk of a "Rockford Files" remake a couple years ago. Delrot Mulroney was reportedly going to play the role James Garner made famous from 1974-80 as ex-con turned private investigator "Jim Rockford" and that David Chase, the producer/creator of the FOX medical drama "House" was going to develop the updated series for NBC. The network never picked up the pilot.

Got to outshark the SHARK here. David Shore is the producer of House....David Chase was the producer of the far superior The Sopranos.....GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

I would watch 2 out of those 3.

You can't do the The Rockford Files without James Garner, though.

6 Billion Dollar Man and Fall Guy. If they could do a Matt Houston remake with cameos from Lee Horsley and Pamela Hensley, I'd watch that, too.

Man from U.N.C.L.E is far before my Grandpa's time. No interest.

I did watch some I Spy reruns as a yout'. That was good stuff.

Wild, Wild West was a great show, too, that they turned into a shit movie. So, maybe I wouldn't watch any of this.

it doesn't matter what they remake; 9/10 times it will be soulless and homogenized.

I thought the Star Trek reboot was pretty good

a reboot's a little different. it can change the original canon, which is what "star trek" did. a remake is taking the same characters, same plot, and just re-filming it with new actors and a somewhat updated script. "star trek" changed a whole lot from the original story.

+1

And I LOVE the word "canon" used (appropriately, of course!) in a sentence! :wink:

Right on. Then I am with you. Most remakes blow.

It would have been better if he spelled it Cannon...

Moment of silence please for William Conrad, the actor who played "Cannon". Thank you.

Generally speaking, I have no time for remakes.

As crappy/schlocky as the original Munsters was, who'd thought it would be a high water mark? Certainly the remake Shark mentions was utter dreck...

Along the same lines: movies made from old TV shows. There aren't many that are good.

i think "munsters" live off its camp value and cult status...i would think. now, the addams family did it in a nice way with the films back in the 90's...they were quaint. nothing earth shattering, but fun and entertaining.

remakes are just shoved down everybody's throats nowadays. and as i previously mentioned, most of them suck the root.

I think people are just more tuned in now than they were back in the day. Remakes have been around forever. Everything from Dracula, The Ten Commandments, the Hunchback of Notre Dame to My Man Godfrey were remade.

Now, we hear, read, see all about them on whatever device we use to keep in the know. We also get to see the originals whenever we want on DVD, streaming, TV or download. Back in the day, all they had was the newspaper, radio and phone to get information and all they could watch was at the movie house. I think that's why people are getting sick of them.

well, in those days you didn't have television. you didn't have repeats or anything. and like you said, no DVD's. basically a remake in those days was the equivalent of a re-production...like when a shakespeare play is done.

Exactly. The thing is, Hollywood Executives haven't caught up yet, despite the fact that TV has been mainstream and replaying movies since the late '50s/early '60s. If they factored that in, they might be more willing to take a chance on new stories/ideas. What they count on are kids with short attention spans, who only consider what was created in their lifetimes to be relevant, or old people who only like what they already know.
