Good question.

I'm going to go with Common based on lyrics only.

Common is one of the best lyricists ever... Kanye is probably one of the best producers ever...

Kanye is far more approachable and easier to digest. Common is more of an acquired taste.

I'd say Common, but I loved how they teamed up as a Producer/MC tandem on Common's "Be" album. That's one of the few albums where I can say I like every song. Kanye's production played a big part in that.

Agreed. Even though I cannot stand 'testify'...

I used to love it. Got sick of it... The chopped sample gets annoying to me... Imo that's his 2nd or 3rd best album...

Great thread. Two of my favorite emcees.

Tough call. If I had to choose one.....I guess I'd go with Kanye. Ask me next week and it would probably be Common.

Two of the best Hip Hop albums ever made are Be and College Dropout. Kanye produced bothe (well, most of Be). Dude is insanely talented...

I used to listen to Be every day. My drive to work was about 45 min, so this album was perfectly timed for the ride.

Common might be THEE best lyricist ever.

Kanye leaves a bigger mark on hip hop though by volume if not charisma

Both best whem working with other one .....like Guru and Preem

Common has easily been one of the best MCs since hes be out. Love Resurrection and Like Water but Be is better lyrically and productionwise. Classic album

KanYe is an underrated MC who keeps improving with every album. IMO he should have 3 5mic albums under his belt

Hmm... I mean technically he's really good (breath control/beat riding), but his lyrics and songwriting ability make him stand out. And he's on decade 3 still putting out solid work...

yes i know, i've heard that

part of it is i don't really like his delivery that much

he's put out a ton of stuff over the years so yeah there are a few times where he's killed it but I just find him to be average - in terms of actual rhymes- for the most part. he obviously has good charisma, good beats and for the most parts talks about a variety of things so it makes up for it.

and by the way, i just looked back at the top 25 thread- HOVA didn't even have him listed (neither did I). Ivan had him at 14, Mr. H at 21 and Roger ranked him the highest of anyone at 7

Cool. This is part of the reason I love hip hop. Hip hop heads who I disagree w/ on things, but who know what they are talking about... I do wonder what you think of Nas, who is comparable IMO.

As far as all time rank Id say top ten sounds about right... Nas is top 5 for me no doubt...

Also can anyone 100% clarify for me that the 'mad Rapper' in those BiG skits was supposed to be Common? I could have sworn Id heard this somewhere...

I actually know someone who swears that Electric circus is great... Idk if I could say that, but I see what Common wqs trying to do there implementing an excessive amount of soul...

One of those skits is on Kick in the Door which Nas says is about him on Last Real N***a
