Completely okay with this. He's a major league quality player and it lets me know that Theo thinks Tyler Colvin sucks too. Win Win.

Hopefully next year or his option year, he'll be a competent bench player for the Cubs.

Or starting in LF when Soriano gets traded......

great move. Think he could be a decent player for the Cubs. I assume Soriano's gone at some point then...otherwise Jackson's out in the cold, isn't he?

I think Byrd is the odd man out at the moment.

So the new RF......decent bat, decent arm, pretty good defensively. Not great power/production.

Didn't we trade that to Cleveland last year? Thought we were supposed to be improving? And pretty sure Fuk never had a .234 season like DeJesus just did last year.

I think if they're serious about rebuilding they've got to get rid of both and get some value for Byrd. I'm not sure Colvin's done, he's cheap for this season.

Contracts compare, Spanky?

But Fuk only batted over .263 once in his career. A hefty .273.

I don't think its a move that is going to morph them into WS contenders but DeJesus is a solid ballplayer. The most exciting news for me was its a 2 year deal for reasonable money. Hendry would have given him 4 years with a full no trade.

So 2 of the 3 full years he was here he batted 30 and 40 points higher than our new RF did last year? :?

I'm convinced! Biggie - upgrade your tickets!!!

I want pitching and/or them to admit they are looking 2-3 years down the road like they should be. And DeJesus just signed for how long?

I haven't kept up with everyone's hopes/dreams, but how many people want them to sign one of the 6+ yr/$125M+ guys? Because that would be a total Hendry move. Pretty sure those guys are gonna get a no-trade clause too.

Not very many around here if you look at the Pujols and Fielder thread. I know for a fact whistler shares your position so you are in good company.

Initially I was alright with this move, but with cof saying it is a good move is making me question that.

Some more info on the deal...

Quote:
The Chicago Cubs signed outfielder David DeJesus to a two-year free-agent contract Wednesday, the team announced.

DeJesus will receive $4.25 million in 2012 and '13, and the team has a $6.5 million option for 2014, with a $1.5 million buyout.
The 31-year-old hit .240 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs last season with the Oakland Athletics. It was statistically the worst season of a major league career that has spanned parts of nine years.

His best season was in 2008, when he hit .307 with 12 homers and 73 RBIs for the Kansas City Royals.

"We're very excited to sign David," Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said. "He's a player who does a lot of things very well, including running the bases and getting on base. And he doesn't strike out very much. These are all areas we wanted to improve on going into next year."

The former fourth-round pick of Kansas City, where he spent his first eight seasons, hits and throws left-handed.

DeJesus, who is a career .284 hitter, played 116 games in right field last season. Hoyer wouldn't commit to a position for him next season but has some idea.

"It's early, but we see him playing in right field," Hoyer said. "He has the ability to play all the positions but he's playing the corner outfield spots."

Kosuke Fukudome started the season in right field for the Cubs but was traded to the Indians, presumably to give Tyler Colvin a look there. But then-manager Mike Quade did not give Colvin consistent time and he finished with a .150 average, six homers and only 20 RBIs in 206 at-bats. He struck out 58 times, which doesn't fit the mold of what the new Cubs regime is trying to do at the plate.

DeJesus may lack in power but Hoyer says he "has the ability to do a lot of things."

"He's player who's very versatile. We can work him in a lot of different spots in the lineup," Hoyer said. "Our priority was to get more balance in our lineup from the left side, and David being a switch-hitter helps us in that area."

So if he sucks in 2012 you can buy him out for only another 1.5 M. I like this deal more and more.

Rumor: Cubs, Rockies Discuss Stewart/DeWitt Swap
I'm not a big fan of Ian Stewart... but trading Blake DeWitt for him might make a lot of sense for both teams.

Hell yes. Do it. Stewart has some upside if he can get back on track. I know he isn't nearly as bad as my perception of him but for some reason I really don't care for Dewitt and welcome his departure.

Don't understand what the point of that trade would be. Have basically the same stats and play the same positions. Hopefully neither one of them would actually play.

The point would be that Blake DeWitt would not be a Cub anymore.

I am in favor of this move.

DeWitt arguably is the worst defensive infielder with over 1000 AB's in the league. Absolutely brutal. You know the brainiacs want him gone with their emphasis on defense.

Dewitt is a low power utility infielder. He is 5'11 195.

Stewart has power potential. He hit 25 hrs on year. He is also quite a bit bigger at 6'3 215. His average kinda sucks though. Better fielder than Dewitt.

By John Arguello, today at 9:03 am That's an interesting idea. Both players are in danger of being non-tendered, both are failed prospects...sounds like a good idea for a change of scenery trade that could do both players some good.

According to the Denver Post, the Rockies would like to move Stewart to open up a spot for hot prospect Nolan Arenado. Per a Rockies blog,

DeWitt could be a nice fit. The Rockies would like a veteran presence who could start in stretches if necessary. But the organization believes former top Draft pick Chris Nelson could produce if given a clean opportunity at second base, and the team will not throw up road blocks for third base prospect Nolan Arenado, a second-round pick in 2009.

According to the site, talks have died down but could resurface Sunday at the Winter Meetings. As bad as DeWitt was at times last year, Stewart was absolutely dreadful. Even Tyler Colvin had a great year by comparison. Stewart hit .156 with 0 HRs last season.

So why would we even want that guy?

Stewart has some of the power potential and plate discipline the Cubs are missing. He hit .256/.338/.443 including 18 HRs in 2010. He hit 26 HRs the year before. He's an above average athlete who runs well, though he's not a base stealer. As a bonus, he's a LH hitter, something the Cubs would like to add. The issues with Stewart have been the ability to make contact at the major league level. He has struck out in less than 25% of his bats only once -- and that was 24.9% in 2010. He's also a below average defender.

Still, he was once considered an up and coming prospect. In fact, he was the Rockies top prospect in 2005 and 2006 according to Baseball America after being their first round choice in 2003.

Seems like it should be worth a flyer. Perhaps having hitting gurus Rudy Jaramillo and Dale Sveum can help Stewart unlock the potential that once made him one of the better 3B prospects in baseball.
