not going to make the Bobby Engram mistake a second time

the guy was making plays for what seems like a decade after they let him go...not Pro Bowl, but valuable

Forte has to be fuming. I hope he runs like Gayle Sayers this weekend.

Why is he fuming? They offered him a deal and he turned it down.

I like Earl Bennett, but I like him for what he is, a #3 possession receiver. This contract extension is the very definition of rewarding mediocrity. Couldn't the Bears have signed 1 or 2 good WR's for this kind of money???
Yes, they could have.
Jerry Angelo should be fired yesterday.

The base value of Bennetts deal is $15 million. Bennett received a $6 million signing bonus, $1.2 million of which counts against the team’s salary cap this season.

Here are the other details of the contract:

2012: Fully guaranteed base salary of $1 million. Bennett also earns a $500,000 roster bonus in March. There is a $100,000 workout bonus.

2013: $2.25 million base salary of which $1.5 million is guaranteed vs. injury. There is a $100,000 workout bonus.

2014: $2.35 million base salary. There is a $100,000 workout bonus.

2015: $2 million base salary. There is a $100,000 workout bonus. There is also an escalating roster bonus that starts at $500,000, giving the contract a base value of $15 million.

Bennett’s 2015 roster bonus can increase by as much as $3 million, making the max value of the contract $18 million.

While he is playing the role of Bobby Engram he is their best receiver. He finds a way to get open. This may end up being a steal.

Bennett is the Bears best WR because Jerry Angelo is a moron. Bennett is a #3 WR on most other NFL teams, & doesn't make the team on a few. Earl Bennett is just a guy.

This just shows me how much you don't know shit about the NFL!

Fact is they have $17 mill under the cap this year and that $6 mill gets applied to this year! Making him a very affordable WR for each year after that. Making it a great deal!

If they dont spend the $17M in cap room they need to fit the $6M and other bonuses paid this year under next years cap.

I expect to see a few more of these deals this year!

They had the money earmarked for Forte, but obviously that's not going to happen, he is going to get franchised.

And if you dont see the difference between Bennett and every other half assed WR that has come through here. Can't help you.

He works with this QB and system. Not sure he is what we really want as a number one...but I think the deal is quite reasonable, especially if $6 million applies to this year. This wouldn't stop me from looking for a number one.

When it comes to drafting, any Angelo rippage is well-deserved. However they have done a good job managing salaries, the cap, and resigning guys worth keeping.

The deal they offered Forte was roughly double this deal. Forte is definitely more than twice as valuable to the Bears as Bennett is.

Thats why it is a great deal for this team! As they cant pay a #1 this year, Earl is now being paid between a 2nd and 3rd WR.

This type of deal basically guarantees Forte the Franchise Tag, especially hearing the top 5 Avg is around 7.8$M for next year.

Bennett would be a good WR on any team. He has Welker potential with a Hines Ward mentality.

Angelo doesn't seem like an Exclusive Franchise type of guy. He's going to allow another team to do his bidding and if the price is too high accept 2 first round picks in return.

That opening line is a linguistic gem Big Fan.

So you like the fact that the Bears are spending money, no matter how foolishly? Angelo is as smart with Bears money as Hendrey was with Cubs money.

Earl Bennett has 18 catches for 276 yards & 1 TD. There are 5 WR's on the Bears with more yards & 6 with more catches.
$4.5 million per year for Earl Bennett is stupid spending.

Angelo doesn't waste much money and he tends to lock players up early. He failed with Forte because until the end of last year you really wasn't sure what Forte was.

No he doesn't. He's an ok #2, a good #3. He's never gonna catch 100 passes in a year.

How do you get that out of a 4 year deal that's worth ONLY $15M maximum if he doesn't play at a high level?

He does. He finds holes in the coverage and he fights for every extra yard. He continues to get better too.

All that is true but he does not have Welker potential.

Calib Hanie & Johnny Knox should be next in line for a contract extension from Jerry. Say $ 20 million for each?
